Food Okata Bento 💔

• Upvotes

I’m heartbroken to hear, that Uncle Lyndon Okata has unexpectedly passed away. He was the 1 man show, that ran the literal hole in the wall named Okata Bento on Waialae Ave since 1981. He made everything with love and care and made my favorite chicken katsu ever. He will be missed and the community won’t be the same without him. Sending my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.

Other Sam's Club Plus members now get Walmart Plus as well starting today... Free heavy shipping to Hawaii?

I saw the news and connected my accounts just now. A lot of people saw this coming from a mile away based on how they are being more active in competing against Costco and Target lately. It's surprising they dropped the news without much of an announcement, but this definitely gives them an edge over its competitors and may possibly be a worthy alternative to Amazon Prime since it comes with Paramount+ or Peacock (you get to choose between the two).

To see if they ship to Hawaii, I just placed an order for a sofa from the Walmart website and it went through without charging me for shipping. We'll see how it goes.

Other Gunshot sounds off Freeway near Pearl City/Aiea?

I live unfortunately close to the H1 in Pearl City/Aiea area close enough to the Kaahumanu St overpass. I suspect someone is shooting while driving. I just heard (12:21PM) multiple gunshot sounding noises coming from the Freeway area. This is the 2nd or 3rd time in the last two weeks. It's too quiet and to close together to be those fireworks bombs. Anyone else hearing similar nearby?

Question Transferring Schools

My family recently moved from Mililani to Aiea. We kept my son at his current school in Mililani (still have access to the address since it’s my parents home) and are planning to transfer him to a different school next year. Does anyone know how to go about the transferring process? What documentation is required and how to let previous school know about the transfer? Thanks in advance!

Employment Interview

• Upvotes

I have an interview tomorrow at 4 PM for an Educational Assistant (EA) position with the Hawaii DOE. I was wondering if you happen to know what types of questions they typically ask or what administrators usually look for in candidates.

My background is mainly in customer service, banking, training employees, and working in team-oriented environments. I also have an Associate Degree in Administration of Justice. I feel like I have transferable skills such as patience, communication, teamwork, adaptability, confidentiality, and problem-solving, but I don’t have direct experience working in a school setting.

I’m especially curious about how I can best relate my previous work experience and skills to the EA position during the interview. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

DMV Vehicle Ownership Transfer Turnaround Time via Mail?

I recently purchased a car from FB Marketplace on 09/12 and mailed the necessary documents to the address listed on honolulu.gov on 09/14. It’s currently 10/19 and I haven’t received my documents back. Due to being time-constrained, mail was my best option, and I understand that it may take a while. I was wondering if anyone may have recent insight on the turnaround time via mail? Mahalo!

I’m on O’ahu for reference.

Question Does Ballottrax expect my residential zip code or my mailing zip code?

I’m just signing up for ballot tracking and the registration asks for my residential zip code. Does anyone know if that means the address where my ballot was delivered, or if it means my physical address which determines the ballot I receive? Because my mailing address is located in a different town.

I checked the FAQ but this wasn’t one of the answered questions.

Question Auto Insurance

Hi! I’m currently looking into different auto insurance options. Right now, I have DTRIC Insurance, but my policy will be ending sometime next year, so I wanted to start looking around early to compare rates, coverage, and see what other options are available. I’ve been interested in learning more about Matsukawa Insurance Agency, Inc. in Wahiawa, but I’m also open to other insurance companies, including mainland companies like Allstate, State Farm, and others that offer coverage here in Hawaii. I’m mainly looking to see what’s out there, compare prices, and hopefully find something that offers good coverage at a reasonable rate before my current insurance expires.

If anyone has recommendations, personal experiences, or suggestions on which insurance companies or agencies I should look into, I’d really appreciate it! Any information would help.

Question Why can't we use non-police for other assignments?

So 100 more officers will be on patrol pulled from other positions. https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2026/10/16/hpd-shift-100-officers-patrol-combat-overtime-boost-response/

With assurances that "HPD said positions within the Community Affairs and Traffic Division will be scaled down, along with positions within Criminal Intelligence Unit, Fourth Watch, Chief’s Office, Misdemeanor Follow-up Details, and the Human Resources, Information Technology, Major Events, Records and Identification, and Training Divisions." https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2026/10/18/hpd-clarifies-future-jpo-pal-programs-after-100-officers-shifted-patrol/

I would appreciate better understanding HPD's rationale for employing sworn officers in administrative positions rather than civilian personnel.

This lost dog wandered out of the forest on Wai’awa Prision Road this week. I brought him to the humane society in Eva Beach. He was a bit beat up with a limp and some open sores. I figure either he was dumped or is a lost hunting dog. He was friendly and would make a great pet!

Food Need two half sheet cakes last minute.

Does anyone know where I can get premade half sheet cakes, where I can just get the name added onto it? It's for a birthday party today. I'm in the Aiea area & can go as far as Kalihi.

Edit: In case anyone comes across this post-- IF CAN, DO NOT ORDER LAST MINUTE LOL. Sam's Club, Liliha Bakery no longer do premade half sheets. What I had to do was order two 1/4 cakes from Safeway and I ordered the last two ones at 1:00 PM and had the lady write a message 😅 I'm grateful I got something but I highly suggest preordering. The places that will do it same day/24 hours: Elvin's Bakery but they're pricey, $170 for a half sheet and $80 for 1/4. Foodland will do it but you need to order at least 24 hours before.

The best you can get last-minute is a round cake.

Question Shipping goods interisland with Young Brothers

I’m looking to ship a 20ft container with young brothers from Honolulu to Hilo. Does anyone know how long you have to load the container? They’re only open from 7:30-3 Tuesday, Weds, Friday but closed 11:30-1 for lunch. Do you have to load your entire container in a day or can you spread it out over multiple days?
