50k on the ODO

It’s been two years with my new (to me) ‘23 BRZ. I got it with 23.5k and have driven it to 50k in just over two years. It is my daily driver and I’ve loved every minute with this car.

I’ve completed regular maintenance since I’ve begun ownership and have only added a Fumoto oil plug, tint, and the GR86 duckbill (which I was able to snag already paint matched to WRB).

I’d love wheels, coils, and an exhaust, but am plenty happy just making sure I can get it paid off and enjoying it as is. I’m always stoked to see others daily-ing their twin and racking up those miles.

Still learning how to make the most out of this car, it really doesn’t need 300 WHP to feel good. Anyone who says so might need driver mod, it really can give cars like caymens a run for their money lol

Varis Hood Options

I’m going to order the Varis Arising 2 hood and color match as shown in the photo. Can someone explain the different finish options? Which one is my local body shop going to prefer? I assume no clear paint, but what is FRP? Thanks! ✌️

First drive of a MY27 GR86

Post image

Took it out of the showroom today. 1st time in a GR86. First time seeing one up close. It has just completed its first drive, around 250km.

So, initial impressions.

Well, it looks 🔥. Manual, DPP, GTS, Red, with gloss black duckbill. Had a little kid tell his mom "Wow, Ferrari!" at the first gas stop I made. I didnt argue with him. He doesnt need to know what a Subaru is.

Drove it according to break in instructions so I cant really comment on the dynamics or performance.

The steering wheel is tiny. Thats not a pro or con, just an observation. Feels good though. Lets call it compact and easily manipulated, all the buttons right there. Quick to action. Better than the chonk BMW M wheels. Bluurgh.

The gear shifter is divine. So notchy and solid. Very nice indeed. Definitely the stand out feature so far. Its better than the BMW Z4M shifter I had, i can say easily, but jury still out in comparing it to my old MX5 Miata. Ill hold off judgement until I really use it as it was intended.

I have no idea what ppl are complaining about regarding the clutch pedal, but then again I was shifting like a grandma on this initial drive. Pulling off slowly in first can make it hop a bit but I think thats just me learning the bite point. I have no complaints or any immediate desire to switch the spring as many say is a MUST MOD. I doubt ill change the stock one.

A lot of road noise, zero engine or exhaust noise while cruising 80-110 km/h keeping it under 3500 rpm. It needs an aftermarket exhaust & intake 100%, but I knew that going in to it, and its quietness is partly why a car like this can still be sold with all the government killjoy mandates about.

Interior: Where my elbow naturally rests on the door armrest is where the soft material ends and harder material starts. Thats annoying. I adjusted the steering wheel and chair back so I caught the soft bit, but now pedals are farther away than Id normally sit. Its fine. Just something to adapt to.

The dark trim is nice. Only saw the silver in pics but if there was an option, id choose the blacked out trim pieces. Its a good update.

Impressed with the interior overall. It isnt so much of a downgrade from a BMW interior that im upset. Making only some of the armrest soft is how they keep the price down i guess. Beyond that minor gripe, it has everything I want/need, and nothing I dont want, like huge screens everywhere or OTT ADASS. Yeah, the tach is digital but in 2026, the screen situation in the GR86 is minimal and perfectly balanced with analogue switches. Zero complaints. Seats are comfy, well supportive. Drove 4hrs today and had no discomfort.

The opening and closing of the boot with no defined handle is annoying simply from a fingerprint point of view. Im sure ill find a technique that works. No, I am not drilling a hole for that Perrin guff. There are some 3D printed handles that afix to the locking mech that might be worth a try.

But. The elephant in the room. That new and 'improved' Eyesight atrocity.

Yeah. Its bad.

It has no negative impact on safety or driving visibility. You can see everything you need to see to drive no issue. But. If youre driving along a road with a great vista and want to glance out to distance, towards the passenger side of the windscreen, you ain't seeing anything beyond the roadside. No treetops, no sky, no hilltops beyond the centre of the windscreen. To see that you need to dip your head down for an uninterupted view, which is annoying. If not, your view is dominated by the rear view mirror, because its right there in your face, pushed back to make room for the Eyesight box. Good for seeing behind you, not for looking at the scenery. You have to turn a full 90⁰ and look out the passenger window to get an uninterrupted view of whatever is outside in the distance that side of the car, which IS dangerous because you now have no eyes on the road. So, dont do that.

Is it a deal breaker?

Maybe. For me, no. Im going to live with it. I have to. I already bought it. Its just somewhat annoying. Annoying to think that a safety improvement detracted from the overall experience, even if just a little bit. Often the fun roads are in picturesque locations so your experience will be slightly detracted compared to an older model that doesnt have the shoebox glued to the window. Fix: make sure whatever is worth looking at is on the driver's side of the car, then no issue at all. I also dropped the seat down to the lowest position to increase what I could see in that direction. Which again, slightly annoying because I usually like a higher position so I am able to see the end of the hood for positioning. Good job its a shorter hood than the looooong hooded Z4. With all that said, I want to stress its really not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. It is what it is.

Im very excited to get the break in period over and done with so I can really drive it as intended. I already got pulled on this 1st journey for a roadside breath test, even while driving like a grandma in a bone stock car. The first of many I am sure.

I’ve just installed camber bolts. I used 14mm whiteline camber bolts at the bottom and left the stock 16mm bolt up top. I managed to get a massive -2.2 degree camber on the left side which was totally out of spec for this type of setup. The other side sits at a expected -1.2

• Upvotes

How’s that possibly? I would be happy with -2.2 but I can’t get the other one there and the nuckle on the left definitely moved way further so it’s not an issue with the numbers. Anyone come across this issue?

New Chicago owner

Hey guys! I own a gr86 2023 from about 3 months and I'm looking for a reliable mechanic for basic maintenance close to the city that you guys recommend. I would love to do it myself specially things like oil changes etc but unfortunately I don't have the space to do it. Any recommendations would be gladly appreciated.

Have a good day!:D

Question Dashcam removal advice

Getting my front windshield replaced next week. My A229 Pro camera is attached to the windshield with the 3M pad. I didn't use the static pad when it was mounted originally, so it's stuck directly to the glass. What's the best way to remove that from the windshield?

Side Skirts

Does anyone know of any actual side skirts/splitters that pair with the TRD side skirts? Not referring to something like the street aero one where it’s a little add on but an actual side splitter that’s compatible?

Poll What do you guys think?

A big reason I wanted an 86 was because of Initial D. What do you guys think of this license plate frame? I know my car is red instead of the iconic panda color scheme, but I can still pay homage to Initial D, right? 😂🔥

Hi all,

Any aftermarket PCV valves recommendations for Harrop SC? I have seen most people use the one for WRX but they can also fail.

It picked up a few scratches during its trip from Japan in a shipping container. It’s super dirty, but I’m very excited to finally own one of the 200! It’s a 2024 manual with only 7,000 km on the clock.
