BEST OF LA I ate 12 burritos in SF, LA and SD. There's one I still think about.

A few weeks ago, I went from San Francisco to San Diego to Los Angeles on back-to-back-to-back days, all in search of a great burrito. 12 burritos, about 500 total miles, in 72 hours.

And while I came away so impressed with stuff in San Diego, ultimately the burrito that felt the most comforting for me was still a street lonchera burrito in LA — specifically from Angel's Tijuana Tacos. It's maybe not the 'best' singular burrito (whatever arbitrary metric that means) but man, it was burrito no. 12 for me and I ate the whole damn thing.

Koreatown Sun Ha Jang (Duck KBBQ) is having its last day of service on Saturday, 10/24

Sadly one of the more unique and delicious Korean bbq options is closing down after the building was purchased. I’d highly recommend anyone who hasn’t been try to make it there this week for some duck and duck fried rice before they close for good.

WHERE CAN I FIND Best Pho in LA

I'm visiting LA and want to know where the best pho is. I've had Pho Phong Luu in Austin and it was mind-blowingly good, especially the broth.

Appreciate recs for restaurants that are good for big groups (~15 people), preferably without having to put a large deposit down. Open to brunch, lunch, or dinner - preferably on the west side. Thanks!

Westside German American Club

Looking for German on the Westside? I went to the German American Club in Santa Monica recently, once for their Oktoberfest event and once for their club night after I got a trial membership. Really fascinating place, crazy that it still exists in West LA. So old world. First pic is from club night, that's beef goulash, spaghetti (was supposed to be spätzle but i guess plans fell through), and red cabbage, pics 2-4 bratwurst, leberkäse, sauerkraut and potato salad. Trial membership is $15, attend three meetings and you can apply for full membership. For members beer is $6 a pint, and we ain't talking Bud Light, they got the good imported stuff! What an interesting place this city can be.

BEST OF LA Food to order for Friendsgiving?

I’m hosting Friendsgiving in November. A few people will also be bringing small sides & we’ll be about 12-15 people.

I’m definitely making a few dishes but to be honest, I have been VERY stressed with work lately & don’t want to spend the day slaving over the stove. So, I want to supplement by also ordering some things to take the pressure off.

I’ve heard Bristol Farme & Gelson’s have some pre-order Thanksgiving mains and sides, but no idea if they’re good. I also plan to order some potato balls & small bites from Porto’s. I’m planning to get a charcuterie board from Charcuterie LA.

Does anyone have suggestions for great spots in LA to order larger sized dishes/sides/snacks etc? It doesn’t have to be thanksgiving food specifically. I’m a big big foodie so I’d love to order some really good stuff for everyone to munch on. Thanks!

WHERE CAN I FIND Dark Vibes Anniversary Spot?

Dear fellow opinionated Angelenos,

My anniversary is on Halloween. My husband and I actually got married over dinner at Musso & Frank and I’m holding a reservation there, but I’m not sure we’re up for Halloween on Hollywood Blvd. this year. I thought this sub might have an idea we haven’t thought of.

We’re looking for dark ambiance. Obviously killer food. Old school or new school. Good service a must. No limitations in terms of cuisine or cost. We’d prefer not to go into Hollywood, but are otherwise flexible on location.

Any ideas?

Local Food Deal Three weekday happy hours in Pasadena, plus a directory I’m putting together

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a few Pasadena options from the restaurants’ published menus that might be useful if you’re planning something during the week:

Gaucho Grill Pasadena: Monday–Friday, 3–6 p.m. Their happy-hour menu lists a $3 empanada of the day and $5 draft beer.

The Arbour: Monday–Friday, 4–5:30 p.m., at the bar. Their menu lists an $11 Arbour burger and $6 garlic fries.

Magnolia House: Monday–Friday, 4–6 p.m. Their happy-hour menu lists $7 draft beer and $8 Belgian fries.

These are the hours and prices listed by the restaurants, so double-check before heading over in case anything changes.

I’m getting the After Five App off the ground and would really appreciate feedback from people who would actually use something like this.

Any Pasadena or nearby happy hours you think deserve to be included?

RESERVATIONS N//naka reservation

Post image
19 Upvotes

Fellow foodies!!! I have a reservation at n/naka (the two Michelin star Kaiseki restaurant) for 2 this Thursday at 9pm that I can’t make anymore. These reservations are so hard to get and are released every Sunday for the corresponding week one full month ahead. I’ve already paid the $200 deposit but these reservations are transferable to someone! Wondering if anyone wants to take this over??

Let me know!

WHERE CAN I FIND Where the fuck are the mission style burritos near NELA

When we first moved here from the Bay Area my wife insisted that burritos here were bad. I didn’t agree with her but honestly now I do.

We undoubtedly have the best taco scene in the game, but sometimes you just want a burrito right? I’ve been hugely disappointed here, she’s right. I don’t hate a simple bean, rice and meat burrito, but even those I’ve had here are seriously lacking.

A mission style burrito has: rice, beans, cheese and sour cream and a choice of meat. Crucially the tortilla should also be griddled. I’ve yet to find a burrito here that that fits the above criteria outside of La Esquina near Culver City. But I don’t live near there anymore.

Where should I go in NELA where I live now?

Edit: I should say that we do have some great burritos of other styles. Sonoratown and La Palma are great. Al and Bea’s is good but fuck the line. But I’m wondering specifically about a mission style burrito.
