Guys, I know we get these posts all the time, but I legitimately thought I would never be able to do this. I spent probably 5 hours last night working on it to no avail. Posting to share my experience as someone who is generally pretty bad at this sort of game (why I love the turn-based combat of FFX) but who managed to make this work within about a half hour after spending five minutes adjusting settings.
I'm playing HD remaster on PC connected to my TV primarily using an Xbox controller. Input lag was absolutely a problem for me.
I changed my TV to game mode and went into NVIDIA control panel to turn low latency mode to ON. Also went into my display settings to increase the refresh rate from 30 Hz to 60 Hz. This noticeably improved my ability to control the damn chocobo. (Others have previously posted about the supposedly errant movements and how this can improve its responsiveness to your commands.)
I also tried using my wireless keyboard instead of the Xbox controller. It only took me about 10 or so tries before I actually freaking got it. Fourteen balloons with one bird.
I could not have done this without everything people have posted here over the years. Seriously, the chocobo whisperer u/Quill386 and everyone who has commented their ideas and experiences - thank you guys. I literally studied this shit. I particularly found Quill's post about his 20 balloon zero bird run to be inspiring, especially his comment about the mental game:
>I pretended like I didn't even care how good I did, and psyched the game out
Here was how I mentally coped: I told myself, "It's time to play chocobo catcher. This is the game I play and it is the only game I own." I made every effort to forget about the outcome/goal of the Sun Sigil and just try to play the game, like I was back playing Pitfall or something on the Sega Genesis. "This is the game I play."
In case it helps anyone, this is sort of how I've tackled the lightning dodge as well. Counting to 200 just makes the pressure build. My solution? 1-2-3-4, two 2-3-4, three 2-3-4 and so on. It feels a lot less scary "counting to 50" than it does counting to 200. I also deliberately double count a few numbers here and there to build a little padding around so I don't know exactly how many I have, but I know I have a minimum of twenty 2-3-4 (meaning 80).
Guys, I really never thought I would ever be able to do this. If I can do it, anyone can.
