Question Big Mistake?

Post image

I left Treno and the mist has descended yet I see this yellow dot marked on the map. Did I miss something terribly or can I move forward with my game? Please tell me I didn’t make a big mistake because I’m not sure I have a back up save.

[beta] Online Co-op Mod

Made a 2-player online or local-LAN co-op mod that lets you play with a friend.

It requires the latest stable Memoria Engine (v2025.07.04) as well as some engine patches for it and Python. Install from the github link below through the .exe or by cloning the repo and running apps/ff9_workspace.pyw.

They walk around with you on maps as the character slot you assign them to, and are teleported along with you. They follow your dialogue and choices. They also take control of that character in battle, like the classic PS1 co-op.

Release and setup instructions below. Any questions or issues, ask me here, in the Github issues, or on the Moogles & Mods discord.

I am playing FF9 on my switch 2 while I quietly await OoT to come out. I've made it to kujas castle and am at the part after frog cid frees the prisoners. I have every candle lit except for the one in the image and I can't find a way to that staircase.

Can someone lead me in the right direction?

I make Multiplayer mods

Hello,

I've been working on this for a while, and here it is :D

Here's what's included:

LifaMods turns Final Fantasy IX into a shared online world. Everyone plays their own save at their own pace, and you see the other players walking around in the same area and on the world map. On top of that you can duel, play Tetra Master, trade, hunt treasure on chocobo and build a clan together. It is a Memoria mod, connected to a small dedicated server.

Play together

  • See the other players in the same area and on the world map: position, facing, animations and their name above their head.
  • The name frame changes every 10 levels: bronze, silver, gold, emerald (with gems), sapphire, amethyst, ruby (glowing), mithril and rainbow. The level is shown next to it.
  • T opens the chat, with speech bubbles above the speaker's head, whispers (/w name message, /r to reply, with the Moogle "kupo" sound) and emotes drawn with the game's own icons (Moogle, character faces, status icons; Tab opens the picker).
  • F8 shows who is online and where (area name, in battle, world map).
  • Other players are hidden during your cutscenes and dialogues.
  • Each nickname has its own save files, so two games on the same PC never mix their saves.
  • Top-right icons for the duel ranking, the clan and the game's main menu.
  • All mod windows use the game's own menu style: font, window frame and hand cursor.

Player versus player

  • Tetra Master (F7): challenge a player standing next to you, in an area or on the world map (on foot). Each player uses their own card collection, and the winner takes a card as in the game.
  • Battle duel (F10): your party against the other player's party in a real FF9 battle. Their characters keep their model, weapon and stats. Damage is halved by default so fights last longer. HP and MP start full and are restored afterwards; the loser simply returns to the area, no game over.
  • Ongoing duels show a pulsing icon ("Duel: A vs B") to the other players in the area.
  • Ranking (Numpad 9): a top 50 for battle duels and one for Tetra Master. A result counts only when both games report the same outcome, with at most 10 results a day between the same two players.

Trading (F11)

  • Trade items, gil and Tetra Master cards with a nearby player, in a window driven with the mouse.
  • Each side sees the other's offer live. The trade happens only when both players have confirmed, and changing an offer cancels the confirmations.
  • The game autosaves right after the trade, so quitting without saving cannot undo it for only one side.

Chocobo treasure hunt

  • Every 20 to 40 minutes a treasure is buried somewhere on the world map, the same one for everyone.
  • The chat says where to look: dry land, shallows (light blue chocobo), mountains (red chocobo) or open sea (dark blue chocobo).
  • Ride your chocobo, follow the hint (cold, warm, hot, burning, here!) and press F9 to dig. The first player to dig in the right spot wins gil and an item matched to their level.
  • Very rare bonus on disc 4: a 1% chance of Excalibur II, once per player.

Clans (F9)

  • Create a clan with a name, a tag of up to 4 letters and a colour. Up to 20 members.
  • The leader invites, kicks and promotes members. The [TAG] appears next to the name frame, and /c message talks to your clan only.
  • Clan level 1 to 10: every battle won against monsters and every treasure found gives the clan experience.
  • Blessings (level 3+): for 10,000 gil from the clan bank, 24 hours of +3% EXP or +4% gil on battles won, for every member.
  • Clan bank: every member can deposit and withdraw items and gil. Each move becomes final with an automatic save, which prevents duplication.
  • Boss raid: up to 4 members fight one of the four Chaos together, each controlling one character with their own ATB bar. It costs 500,000 gil from the bank. The boss scales to the group's level, and every player earns EXP, gil, AP and items.
  • Clan grounds (level 6+, 1,000,000 gil): a private copy of the village of Dali, empty of NPCs and events, where members teleport and meet. You come back exactly where you left.
  • Merchants on the clan grounds (200,000 gil each): an item seller in the pub, a weapon and armour seller and a synthesis shop in the store. Their stock follows each player's own story progress.

Hunting Festival

  • A server-wide event every 6 hours, for 1 hour (at 0:00, 6:00, 12:00 and 18:00 server time). The chat announces it 5 minutes before and when it opens.
  • Every battle won against monsters gives the level of each monster in points: a level 1 monster gives 1 point, a level 10 monster gives 10. Bosses count double. Player duels and clan raids don't count.
  • A transparent panel on the right of the screen shows the time left, the top 10 hunters and your own place. Press ² to hide or show it. Scores start from zero at each festival.
  • Rewards: 100,000 gil for 1st place, 50,000 for 2nd and 25,000 for 3rd. A winner who is offline gets the gil at their next connection.
  • The ranking window has a Hunting Festival tab: the players who finished 1st most often, then 2nd, then 3rd.
  • Server admins can start a festival at any time (hunt start, or hunt start 30 for 30 minutes) or end it early (hunt end).

Fair play

  • Memoria's cheats (speed, 9999 damage, level 99, gil...) are turned off while you are connected, and come back when you go offline.
  • Save anti-cheat: the server checks that a save is possible for its play time (level, gil, items, disc). It also checks that nothing jumps suddenly between checks.
  • Loading an older save than your last one blocks the clan bank, trades, raids and the ranking, so nothing can be duplicated. The block lifts when you load your latest save, or automatically after 1 hour of play on that game (at your next save). Your server admin can also lift it at once.
  • A suspect game stays playable, but the bank, trades, raids and the ranking are blocked the same way.
  • A nickname that is already connected is refused.

Extra Equipment Menu support

  • With the Extra Equipment Menu mod, other players see your costumes, colours and weapon transmogs in areas, on the world map and in boss raids.
  • Everyone needs the same costume mods for this to work.
  • LifaMods disables EEM's extra-slot items (No EXP, No AP, No Gil, Weapon Scale, Model Scale).

Discussion Endgame Thoughts on Characters: I Loved Them But Wish Freya Were Developed More

I finally got through this game after returning to it years after I stopped halfway the first time I played it. Unlike its predecessor FF8, which starts with a bang and left me disappointed mid-to-endgame, FF9 stayed strong the whole way through, and I thought the later parts of the game had a more consistently compelling story and character development in the end.

I liked the way almost all the characters develop. I was especially surprised with the amount of depth Amarant was able to be given, even with him joining so late and being so terse.

My big disappointment was Freya's lack of development. I like Freya a lot, but she just didn't seem to get developed much, past the part with Burmecia and Cleyra. I was especially frustrated at the early emphasis on Fratley, and then his appearance and memory loss, which built intrigue, but there was zero development or follow-up. I have so many questions, like how and why Fratley lost his memory and how that relates to anything else in the story. Freya's relationship with Zidane starts strong but was also not developed at all. And, contrasting with Lindblum and Alexandria which are revisited multiple times even after being "destroyed", and you see both being rebuilt, neither Burmecia nor Cleyra are revisited in the plot. Overall I felt like Freya was just along for the ride for the whole rest of the game, and that was frustrating. It was almost like the creators of the game just stopped putting energy into Freya or anything relating to her, past Cleyra. I thought there was so much missed potential with Freya, like she goes through so much grief and trauma and you don't really see much processing of it or personal growth from it, while most of the other characters experience dramatic examples of this type of growth.

Question Is the Switch version of this game objectively worse than the PS4 version?

I have honestly heard mixed things. What do we know for sure? I have only played the PS4 version, is the Switch version inferior to that?

Question Anyone else struggle with Maliris too?

I initially struggled with Maliris because of the final attack that kills everyone before it dies. I was somehow able to win against it, even after consulting a guide and even without putting it to Sleep, I survived against the final attack.

What's your opinion on this boss and it's difficulty?

I don’t post too much art things yet, but this is an art piece that I decided to make, and am happy with how this turned out! This was mainly inspired by one of the official art pieces from Square’s FFIX 25th Anniversary Celebration, which I thought were really adorable, so this was fun to work on! Anyways, I’m hoping to eventually get back to this game very soon, since I was enjoying it, so far.

Bug Game is soft-locking and ruining my day. Willing to accept suggestions.

I've been playing through Final Fantasy IX on OG PS1 and I'm at the end of the game. Disc 4, like 4 bosses left. But I started to notice during Grand Dragon grinding that Level 5 Death was taking forever to load. It would zoom in on Quina and take 10+ seconds to load. And the more I did it the longer it took. I even sat and waited about 10 minutes. Eventually I looked it up and saw a suggestion to try it in a different console in case it was the laser so I switched to a PS2 and it didn't help a ton but I got through it. I eventually looked at the disc itself and notice there's a good deal a scratches in one little section.

Now here I am, fighting Lich, with him using Level 5 Death and having sit here watching him cast it for 20 minutes now, knowing if i somehow get through this 8 still have another boss with Level 5 Death.

I have resigned myself to the possibility that I may have to buy another copy, (which isn't a big problem, the game isn't really expensive, I just don't want to have to wait a week before finishing up the last 2-3 hours), but before I do that I figured I would ask if anyone would have any suggestions. Any help would be much appreciated.

Question Do the mods work with the Japanese GOG version?

Do things like the Memoria Launcher and Moguri Mod work with the Japanese store-region locked version of Final Fantasy IX on GOG? With the title "FINAL FANTASY IX JP"? The Japanese version includes both Japanese and English I'm pretty sure, while the US version only has English.

Modding Local co-op mod for FF9 pc version request

As many probably already know, the PS1 version of FF9 had a built in local coop option where a second player with a second controller could control selected characters during combat. It's a small thing but I think this feature helps in introducing the game to others, especially kids. It would be amazing if someone could restore this feature to the pc version and make it compatible with other mods.

FF9 Complete Story, Part 1 of 8: The Mist and the Canary

Post image
94 Upvotes

This is Part 1 of an 8-part weekly series covering the complete story of FF9. Heads up that it will contain spoilers.

-

There exists a world where crystals pulse with the energy of life itself, where mist obscures both vision and truth, and where the line between existence and oblivion rests upon choices made by those who dare to question their purpose. This is Gaia, a planet caught between creation and destruction, where kingdoms wage war beneath perpetual fog, where manufactured soldiers march without souls, and where the very fabric of reality conceals a dying world desperate to consume the living. In this realm of airships and magic, of ancient summoners and artificial beings, a story unfolds that asks the most fundamental of questions. What does it mean to live when death is certain? What defines a person when their memories are false? And when faced with the void that seeks to unmake all existence, what gives us the strength to declare that we have the right to be?

The world of Gaia stretches across four distinct continents, each separated by vast oceans and unified by a peculiar phenomenon that defines life upon its surface. The Mist rises from the earth itself, a dense fog that blankets the land in an ethereal shroud, obscuring the ground and limiting vision to mere yards in places where it pools thickest. For generations, the people of Gaia have lived with this Mist as an unchangeable constant of their world, adapting their lives around its presence, building their cities above its reach when possible, navigating its depths when necessary. They do not question its origin or its purpose. The Mist simply is, as fundamental to their reality as gravity or time, an environmental constant that has shaped civilization's development in ways both obvious and subtle.

The Mist Continent, so named for the perpetual fog that smothers its landscape, houses four major nations locked in an intricate dance of diplomacy, rivalry, and barely restrained ambition. Alexandria stands as perhaps the most powerful of these kingdoms, a realm of stone towers and grand architecture built into the side of a massive cliff face, its castle rising from the rock itself to dominate the skyline. The kingdom has long been ruled by the Alexandros line, and in the year seventeen ninety-nine, Queen Brahne sits upon its throne. She is a woman of considerable girth and even more considerable appetite for power, though those who remember her from years past speak of a different person entirely, a ruler who once governed with wisdom and genuine care for her subjects.

Lindblum represents a stark contrast to Alexandria's medieval grandeur. This city-state has embraced technology and progress with enthusiasm that borders on obsession, its workshops and factories churning out airships and machinery powered by an ingenious harnessing of the very Mist that plagues the continent. Regent Cid Fabool IX rules here, an inventor and engineer whose mind constantly churns with new designs and improvements, though he currently suffers under a curse placed by his wife Hilda that has transformed him into an oglop, a small insect-like creature, punishment for his infidelity. Despite this reduced form, his intellect remains sharp, and his city rises in concentric circles, each level connected by intricate systems of elevators and walkways, the entire metropolis a testament to humanity's ability to adapt and innovate. Steam and Mist mingle in Lindblum's air, creating an atmosphere of industrial ambition that attracts merchants, inventors, and opportunists from across the continent.

To the north lies Burmecia, the Rain Kingdom, home to a race of anthropomorphic rats who have built their civilization beneath perpetual rainfall that never ceases, never pauses, never shows even the briefest glimpse of clear sky. Water streams down ancient stone in endless rivulets, pooling in streets designed to channel its flow, creating a city that exists in harmony with precipitation that would drown any other settlement. The Burmecians are a proud warrior culture, their Dragon Knights legendary for their prowess in battle and their ability to leap incredible heights, wielding spears with deadly precision. They value honor and martial discipline above all else, their society structured around these principles in ways that outsiders often find difficult to comprehend.

Cleyra, sister kingdom to Burmecia, has chosen isolation over engagement with the wider world. Built atop an enormous tree that rises from the desert on the southern edge of the continent, protected by a perpetual sandstorm that prevents approach by any without knowledge of the proper path, Cleyra represents Burmecian culture as it existed before contact with other nations. Where Burmecia has opened itself to trade and diplomacy, Cleyra maintains traditions unchanged for centuries, its people living in harmony with the ancient tree that provides their home, their sustenance, and their identity. The sandstorm is not natural but magical, maintained by the kingdoms priests and drawing power from the tree itself, a barrier that has kept Cleyra safe from the wars and conflicts that have periodically consumed the continent below.

Between these major powers exist smaller settlements and villages, places like Dali with its farming community and windmills, Treno with its auction houses and stark division between wealthy aristocracy and desperate poor, and scattered hamlets that eke out existence in the shadow of kingdoms and the depths of Mist. Travel between these locations is difficult and dangerous, the Mist breeding monsters that lurk in its depths, creatures twisted by exposure to its energies into forms both bizarre and deadly. For most citizens of the Mist Continent, the world beyond their home village or city remains unknown, a realm of stories and speculation rather than lived experience.

But the Mist Continent is not the entirety of Gaia. Beyond its borders lie the Outer Continent to the west, the Forgotten Continent to the east, and the Lost Continent to the north, each separated by oceans that most will never cross, each harboring their own mysteries and histories. The Outer Continent features lush forests and the ruined village of Madain Sari, once home to a tribe of summoners whose eidolons were legendary, now little more than crumbling stone and fading memories. The Forgotten Continent holds the Iifa Tree, a massive growth whose roots delve deep into the planets core, its purpose unknown to the scattered inhabitants who give it wide berth, sensing something profoundly wrong in its presence. And in the frozen north of the Lost Continent, ancient structures of impossible design suggest civilizations that predate current recorded history by millennia.

This is the world into which our story begins, a world on the cusp of changes that will shake its foundations and force every inhabitant to confront truths they would rather leave buried. Forces move in shadows, plans laid generations ago reach fruition, and ordinary people find themselves thrust into extraordinary circumstances that will determine not just their own fates but the fate of existence itself.

On the fifteenth day of January in the year seventeen ninety-nine, the kingdom of Alexandria celebrates the birthday of Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII with grand festivities that draw crowds from across the realm. The centerpiece of these celebrations is a performance of the famous play "I Want to Be Your Canary" by the renowned playwright Lord Avon, performed by the traveling theater troupe known as Tantalus. The streets fill with citizens eager to witness the spectacle, vendors hawk their wares to the assembled masses, and the castle itself has been adorned with banners and decorations befitting the occasion. It is a day of joy and celebration, or at least it appears so on the surface. Beneath the festivities, currents of worry and fear run through the population, whispers of the Queen's increasingly erratic behavior and growing militarism that has seen Alexandria's army expand dramatically in recent months.

The Prima Vista, Tantalus's theater ship, approaches Alexandria as the sun sets, its distinctive profile recognizable even to those unfamiliar with theatrical troupes. It is a vessel unlike any other, designed to serve as both transportation and performance venue, its hull opening to reveal a fully functional stage complete with props, sets, and all the technical apparatus necessary for elaborate productions. But Tantalus is more than they appear. Led by the gruff Baku, a man whose scarred face and powerful build seem at odds with theatrical pursuits, the troupe consists of skilled thieves and rogues who use their performances as cover for more lucrative and less legal activities. Tonight they have been hired for their most audacious job yet, commissioned by Regent Cid of Lindblum to kidnap Princess Garnet herself and spirit her away from Alexandria before Queen Brahne's ambitions can drag the continent into war.

Among Tantalus's members is Zidane Tribal, a young man with distinctive blonde hair that seems to defy gravity in its spikiness and a long, prehensile tail that marks him as something other than entirely human. He is charming, flirtatious to a fault, and possessed of an easy confidence that serves him well in both thievery and more personal pursuits. Zidane views the world as an adventure waiting to happen, his philosophy simple and direct: help those in need, oppose injustice when you encounter it, and never miss an opportunity to chat up an attractive woman. This last trait is both his defining characteristic and his most frequent source of trouble, as his inability to resist flirting has complicated more missions than Baku cares to count. But when action is required, when the situation turns dangerous and lives hang in the balance, Zidane proves his worth time and again with skill, bravery, and a refusal to abandon those who depend on him.

The performance of "I Want to Be Your Canary" begins as scheduled, the Prima Vistas stage descending to ground level as Queen Brahne, Princess Garnet, and the assembled nobility take their seats. The play itself tells a romantic tale of forbidden love between a princess and a commoner, of duty versus desire, of the sacrifices made in pursuit of happiness against the demands of station and expectation. It is Princess Garnet's favorite play, a story she has requested repeatedly despite having seen it performed dozens of times, finding in its themes something that resonates deeply with her own circumstances. As the performance unfolds, Zidane plays the male lead with his characteristic charm, delivering lines with just enough sincerity mixed with playful irreverence to make the character memorable. And all the while, Tantalus prepares for the real purpose of their presence, positioning themselves for the abduction attempt that will unfold in the plays final act.

What Tantalus does not know, what even Regent Cid has not been informed of, is that Princess Garnet has her own plans for this evening. She has noticed changes in her mother, transformations in Queen Brahne's demeanor and priorities that have escalated from concerning to frightening over recent months. The Queen who once governed with justice and mercy has become obsessed with expansion and power, speaking of conquest with a gleam in her eye that suggests something fundamental has broken in her mind. Garnet has overheard conversations not meant for her ears, discussions of weapons and war, of extracting eidolons and harvesting power regardless of cost. She has seen her mother transform from beloved parent to something approaching monster, and she knows with absolute certainty that she can no longer remain in Alexandria under Brahne's control. So when Tantalus makes their move during the plays climax, bursting into the royal box to seize the Princess as panicked nobles scatter and Knights of Pluto rush to defend their charge, Garnet does something that catches everyone off guard. She goes willingly.

The escape from Alexandria Castle becomes a chaotic running battle through corridors and courtyards as Tantalus fights their way back to the Prima Vista with their surprisingly cooperative hostage. Adelbert Steiner, Captain of the Knights of Pluto, pursues with single-minded determination, unable to accept that his Princess has been taken, unwilling to imagine failure in his duty to protect her. Steiner is the epitome of rigid knightly virtue, a man who lives by honor, duty, and unwavering loyalty to crown and country. He is also, it must be said, somewhat lacking in imagination and flexibility, his worldview divided cleanly into categories of right and wrong with little room for nuance or complexity. The idea that Princess Garnet might have her own reasons for leaving, that she might be in danger from her own mother, simply does not compute within Steiner's mental framework. To him, Tantalus are villains who have abducted the Princess, and his duty is clear: pursue, rescue, and see the brigands brought to justice.

Also swept up in the chaos is Vivi Ornitier, a small figure in an oversized pointed hat and blue jacket, glowing yellow eyes peering out from a face otherwise shrouded in darkness. Vivi is a black mage, one of the mysterious beings capable of wielding powerful elemental magic, though he himself knows almost nothing about his own origins or nature. He came to Alexandria for the play, having received a ticket from a kind shop owner in Treno after expressing his love of theater, traveling from his home with naive excitement about finally seeing a proper performance. Instead, he finds himself caught in a kidnapping attempt, swept aboard the Prima Vista in the confusion, unable to extract himself from events rapidly spiraling beyond his control or comprehension. Vivi is timid by nature, prone to stumbling over his words and his own feet, unsure of his place in the world and frightened by the magic that he can wield but doesn't truly understand. He wants nothing more than to return home, to his quiet life studying books and practicing simple spells, to escape the overwhelming strangeness of everything happening around him.

The Prima Vista launches with all four of them aboard, Garnet and Steiner and Vivi joining Tantalus in a hasty departure from Alexandria as Queen Brahne's forces mobilize below. But their escape does not go according to plan. A mysterious explosion rocks the ship as it gains altitude, damage to the engine causing catastrophic loss of power that sends the vessel plummeting from the sky. Zidane manages to grab Garnet as the ship breaks apart, the two of them tumbling through the air before crashing through the canopy of the Evil Forest, the impact cushioned by branches and luck in measures impossible to predict. They survive, battered but alive, finding themselves in a place where few dare to venture and fewer still return from unchanged.

Want to skip ahead? I also have this writing narrated as a full YouTube video in the link below. Fair warning before you click! It's an AI voice, and it's not perfect (like my writing) so it has that slightly smooth, unhurried quality that won't be for everyone. No attempts to hide that... If flawless human narration is your thing, this probably isn't it. If you're okay with "pleasantly functional and weirdly relaxing," give it a shot :)
