I've been running Instagram ads for my small music industry business since July, and I've noticed a pretty significant decline in performance over the last couple of months.
The ads promote professional services for artists and DJs. They performed really well when I first started running them (volume and quality.)
For example, between 31 July and 1 August:
- Spent approximately £26 (£13/day.)
- Received 17 applications.
- Cost per lead was around £1.53.
- Three of those applicants eventually became paying customers, including two who purchased relatively high-value services.
I was getting genuinely interested leads who had the budget and were willing to invest in professional support.
Fast-forward to October, and the results look very different.
My most recent test, between 13 and 16 October:
- Spent £49.12.
- Received 14 applications.
- Cost per lead increased to £3.51.
- Lead quality has deteriorated, with pretty much every applicant not willing or able to pay for the services.
What's confusing is that I haven't changed the offer, creatives, targeting, or sales process during this period.
I've been using the same two ads since July, targeting different geographical locations with broad audiences. I tend to run them for a few days, pause them when I have enough enquiries to handle, and restart them when I need more leads.
I wondered if repeatedly pausing and restarting the ads, or using older creatives, was responsible.
However, after reading through this subreddit, I've noticed quite a few people reporting similar problems since September, especially with declining conversion rates, lead quality, and previously successful campaigns suddenly underperforming.
I've also seen discussions about potential issues with Meta's ad delivery system.
I'm now wondering if something on Meta's side could be contributing to what I've experienced.
It's been very frustrating because these ads were a very effective way of acquiring customers, and the deterioration has had a real impact on my business.
I'm interested to hear what others think:
- Has anyone experienced a similar decline in both lead volume and quality since September?
- Have you seen previously successful ads deteriorate?
- Has anyone actually seen performance recover?
- Do you think this sounds like a wider Meta issue, or is there something about my approach that could explain it?
I'm open to the possibility that it's something on my end. I'm just struggling to understand why the difference has been so significant when the ads were previously working so well.
Would appreciate any insights, especially from people running lead generation campaigns rather than e-commerce ads.
Thanks! 🙏
