Royal Refuse

• Upvotes

So I did the switch about a month ago to Royal Refuse from Sanipac and it's been a mess. Today I realize they have been collecting my yard waste with their trash truck. I had an appointment and had to wait to leave and see the person pick up my bin, then only pick up trash bins after that. What is up with that? They didn't pick up one yard waste bin. It's been the same person each time picking up my yard waste bin too.

I did email them today. Yard waste and recycling matter a lot to me.

OHP Dental

• Upvotes

I’m curious if anyone out there with OHP that is over the age of 25 (this matters because dental coverage is massively different based on age) has been able to get coverage for a root canal of a back molar and if so how you did it?

I have a healthy molar that I unfortunately cracked biting down on something hard. It took about a week to be seen by a dentist and they’re telling me I will likely need a root canal in order to save my tooth (it’s more than just that, but that’s the run down.)

OHP does not cover root canals for back molars for anyone over 25, unless they’re a pregnant woman and I’m not pregnant. So, they have me waiting for a denial and then since I’m broke and not pregnant I’ll be forced to have them pull my tooth because I can’t afford the root canal.

I’m defeated, and just so upset. I lost my job about a month ago, got an eviction notice on my door yesterday, and I’m really struggling. Any advice would be great, even if it’s just a reality check that they’re never going to cover it and I’m SOL.

Remember when 4J made the “had a little budget” mistake? Well, now the kids get to eat boxed, processed food.

Good job, 4J. Let's remember this the next time you ask for another bond.

Came home around 2:30 am Wednesday (10/21) morning to find a tabby cat with white paws / white markings on his nose. I live on 10th and Jefferson and there’s lots of strays but they never let me come near them, this tabby is clearly someone’s pet. No collar but very well fed and friendly, im planning to take him in tomorrow to see if he’s chipped. Pls let me know if this baby belongs to you!

Echo Hollow Planet Fitness

Does anyone know when this new location is opening? And, if you have a Planet Fitness membership, is it worth it? I am thinking of getting a Black Card to take advantage of the amenities and also doing weights on a circuit once the days get shorter.

German Speakers?

I’ve been trying to learn German for a while now, but a major sticking point for me has been speaking (and listening) in real time. I just don’t get a lot of practice.

Would any fluent/native speakers like to hang out and sprechen some deutsch? I would provide the Kaffee oder bier. Whatever you’re interested in, I’m interested in! I just want to listen and speak.

If you’re interested, shoot me a message. Danke!

Recs on Outpatient Rehab facilities

I’m seeking recommendations on the best Outpatient Drug Treatment/Rehab facility or program within Eugene/Springfield. There’s a ton of options which is great but I’m feeling super overwhelmed and have heard horror stories about damn near all of them.

A little context, I (39F) am a mom of two & lifelong resident of Lane County. I lost my dream job partially due to a surprise dirty UA a couple years ago and have been stuck in survival mode ever since. I’m trying to pull myself out of this addiction while avoiding eviction & utility shut off AND attempting to maintain composure & well just life in general for my self and my boys. However, my grip is losing strength and I’ve finally come to the very humbling realization that I can’t do this alone. I’ve alway been the one who takes care of everyone else so accepting this is tough.

*** I can’t do inpatient as I have to be able to still work and take care of my kids, home etc.

Any advice or recommendations is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Fragrance-free Second-hand clothes?

Any second-hand clothing stores around here that don’t launder or spray their inventory with heavily fragranced products (like Gain/Febreeze). I’m sensitive to artificial fragrances and it’s so hard to get out of clothes.

Food Barry’s lemon chicken rice soup

Has anyone tried to replicate this at home? Or have the recipe? I’m obsessed with this soup and get a bowl plus a quart to take home every time I visit from Medford. I just made a fresh batch of stock and before I go try to make some kind of approximation I thought I’d check here. I know it’s not some crazy unique soup, it’s a lemon chicken soup heavily seasoned with dill but I want to make THAT soup.

Ideas for new retail spaces?

Hi fellow Eugeneans! I’m reaching out today in the hopes that you’ll help me brainstorm some ideas for a new local business. I’ve decided to start making my entrepreneurial dreams a reality, but I’m not looking for a get-rich-quick scheme. I would like to contribute something to the community I’ve been a part of for almost 20 years by providing a retail space that fills a need or fits a uniquely “Eugene” niche in our wonderful town.

I’m afraid I’m not skilled in the culinary arts, so a restaurant/food truck/etc. is not a good fit, but I have years of retail experience and am envisioning a storefront that provides a needed space beyond just “selling things.” And whatever “things” I decide to sell would have a focus on sustainability, ideally be locally crafted, and would not be some reselling of cheap plastic goods from other countries. I would hope to also have a space for trainings or gatherings of some sort, and some aspect of partnership with a local charity or organization for social good.

Anyone have any ideas for a retail space that 1) isn’t already (over-)represented in Eugene, 2) fits well in the existing marketing landscape of our town, and 3) can not only bring in enough to support me but also to provide support to the community through some sort of partnership? Apologies for casting a wide net, but I’m at the very beginning of thinking about potential paths for starting a business. I’m hoping that other members of the community might have some ideas for spaces that would fit in well with our unique local spirit. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Edited to add: THANK YOU for all the incredible suggestions and please keep them coming! Some of these really have me thinking about interesting retail concepts I hadn’t considered. Keep ‘em coming! You’re all amazing and I am grateful!!

Recs for home heat pump install (that are not owned by private equity)

As the title says, I’m looking for solid no bs hvac/electrical companies in the area to replace old school gas boiler with heat pump. We’ve been approved for an EWEB no interest loan, so I guess it needs to be someone on their approved list. Thanks!

Thanks for all the good recs EUG folk! We already have ducts in the house so we want to utilize them but there’s definitely a bunch here that I’ll reach out to for a quote.

Airport TSA

I know it really varies from airport to airport, but had anyone had experience with bringing knitting needles through TSA at the Eugene airport? I'll live if I can't bring em on board but I'd rather save the space in my carryon if not.

Edit: Seems like the consensus is that it'll be fine. Thanks to everyone that answered!

Eugene coffee shops, rated mainly on the coffee. How'd we do?

I’m a Eugene local and coffee dorklover and I’m helping my friend build a free site that rates coffee shops primarily on the coffee itself - the beans, how well the drinks are made, etc (less so the patios and the pastries).

Here is the site: https://curata.coffee/city/eugene

We would love your feedback to help improve our list, as it's a good start but definitely not perfect.

Current top 5:

  1. Coffee Plant Roaster
  2. Equiano
  3. Farmers Union
  4. Wandering Goat
  5. The Crown Cafe

If you have a minute, we'd love it if you could rate the shops you know. We’ve found that as more people rate, the scores become more accurate, making this a much more useful resource for the community.

Of course, coffee tastes are personal and so the list may resonate better for some vs. others. That’s expected and one of the many wonderful things that make us human! We hope to add filters to allow you to sort based on your own preference (e.g. light vs. dark roast, espresso vs. filter, etc).

It’s free, no ads, and neither of us is affiliated with any shop. Also, although we’ve been working on this for a few months, we just launched the website publicly and it still has a lot of room for improvement! We have a lot of features on our list, but please share with us what’s missing, and anything confusing or broken.

Thank you!

EUGENE CLEAN ENERGY FUND II: Secret of the Ooze

There was a lot of misleading information circulating on my previous post from people confidently on the Vote Yes side:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Eugene/s/TeqoPzeYCE

THIS IS NOT A “VOTE NO” POST. I DON’T ENDORSE EITHER SIDE. THIS IS AN ATTEMPT TO ADDRESS VOTE-YES IMPLICATIONS THAT EVEN ITS OWN PETITIONERS SEEM TO HAVE WRONG.

If I have something wrong here, please correct it instead of just saying, “that’s wrong!”. You owe it to voters trying to navigate the measure.

“Just read the pamphlet and let people make up their own mind”.

I’d love for that to be enough. But the measure doesn’t say “groceries are exempt”. It says “food as defined in 7 U.S.C. 2012(k).” Measures are written by people with lawyers, staff, and time that most working people do not have access to. The voters’ pamphlet doesn’t make clear who funded either side, and petitioners have been oversimplifying crucial details in their favor by saying things like, “groceries are exempt”.

“Aren’t groceries exempt?”

Partly. The legal definition is SNAP’s definition of food, which is broader and narrower than “basic groceries”:

• Exempt: produce, meat, dairy, bread, and also soda, candy, and chips.
• Not exempt: hot deli food and rotisserie chicken, beer and wine, pet food, vitamins and supplements, cleaning supplies, paper goods, and household goods.

Medicine, health care, and residential garbage service are also exempt (Sec. 5(2)). So a can of soda is exempt, but dog food, toilet paper, and a hot meal from the deli are not.

“Isn’t WinCo exempt because it’s a co-op?”

No. WinCo is majority employee-owned through an ESOP, which is probably where the confusion comes from. Legally, though, it’s WinCo Foods, LLC, a Delaware LLC, per Oregon’s business registry. The measure excludes co-ops, credit unions, utilities, and contractors (Sec. 3(10)(c)). WinCo isn’t any of those; it has billions in annual sales and clears the $500K Eugene threshold.

What actually happened in Portland, and the “settled case law” claim.

When Portland’s clean energy surcharge took effect, WinCo and Safeway added a 1% charge to non-grocery items at the register. Shoppers sued.

• Safeway charged it from 2019 to 2020 and settled in 2023 for $8.75M.
• WinCo settled in 2024 for $3.6M.
• Refunds were up to about $200 a person, years later, and only if you heard about it and filed a claim.

That isn’t case law. Both companies settled, admitted nothing, and no court ever ruled on the merits. The lawsuits were about the shelf price not matching the register price, not about passing the cost on, which is legal. Portland’s own rule (LIC-5.08) says listing the surcharge on your receipt is optional. So “it doesn’t show up on receipts anymore” doesn’t mean “it wasn’t passed on.” It can simply be built into the shelf price, where it’s way harder to detect. There has not been a single study on this.

Who’s funding YES?

The largest backer of the Yes campaign is Breach Collective, which gave about $139K in cash and staff time. Its staff organizer is also a chief petitioner. Breach’s 990 marks its donor list RESTRICTED, so I worked backward from the foundations that report grants to Breach:

• Schmidt Family Foundation, from former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, a California billionaire worth about $38B: about $731K from 2020 to 2023, for “encouraging a just transition away from fossil fuels.”
• Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors (New York): $110K. RPA manages grants for wealthy clients, so the original donor isn’t public.
• The Preston-Werner Revocable Trust (Palo Alto, tied to GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner) gave $25K directly to the measure’s petition committee, and funded Breach prior to that ($100k) through his 128 Collective Foundation.

To be clear, Schmidt and Rockefeller didn’t give to the campaign directly, and those grants came before this measure. But money is money. They fund the organization that is running it.

Final word:

Climate action matters, and big retailers paying their share is not an unreasonable idea. But a measure backed by out-of-state billionaire money is being sold as “corporations pay, not you”, and that’s a brutally oversimplified and misleading. Meanwhile, the stores it targets are where working families and SNAP households do most of their shopping, and we’ve already watched those stores pass a nearly identical fee on in Portland. None of that is explained in the pamphlet. That’s politics as usual, and it’s a real bummer.
