Produce Plus: Free Produce

Hello,

I've been attending the Produce Plus events for a couple months now. Was unemployed up until about a month ago. I've found that friends of mine that have been receiving SNAP benefits for years did not know about Produce Plus. As someone who has medically necessary dietary restrictions, I'm forever grateful to the DHS worker who did my SNAP application and told me about this.

This is a free program put on by Food For Lane County that anyone can participate in. You do not need to be receiving or qualify for SNAP benefits to attend and take what you need. Anyone can show up. The only information they ask for is for you to scribble a 'signature' on a sign in sheet and to know how many people you're feeding with the food.

You can check the FFLC website, at the bottom of the list of food pantries, and it will show you all of the Produce Plus dates/times/locations. You basically just walk thru and take the produce that you want. Sometimes they will limit quantity on high demand items like watermelons or avocados depending on how many they have. Most of the produce is organic if that's your thing too.

There are 3 every week in my calendar:

Tuesday's at 3pm

At Kokwel Wellness Center (in the parking lot near Burger King and in front of Albertsons on River road).

Wednesday's at 10am

At the red barn behind Kalapuya and Prairie Mountain, on Patriot Way.

Thursday's at 1pm

At the ODHS Family Wellness Center on W11th.

I recommend arriving early to wait in line if you're able to, or at the very least no later than 15-30 minutes after the start time, as things can go quickly.

The one on Tuesdays is my favorite. Huge variety of produce. I cannot have gluten but they always have infinite loaves of bread and sometimes baked goods (an occasional loaf of gluten free bread for me).

The one on Wednesdays typically will have 1-2 dairy products. Smaller variety of produce but different stuff than what's typically at the one on Tue. Have not been able to make it to the one on Thur. at a reasonable time.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now and there are so many people unemployed and struggling. Produce Plus is the only reason I've eaten some weeks/months.

Stay safe and please share this info with those in your life that could use it!

Welcome to the monthly jobs thread! If you're aware of any job openings, please share them here for eager job-seekers in the Eugene/Springfield area!

And if you're an employer looking to hire, feel free to share any openings you have.

The rules

  • All top-level comments MUST be a link or a description of a job opening or openings in the Eugene/Springfield area
  • Optionally, start your comment with a tag to indicate what type of offering it is. For example:"[Restaurant] Looking for a new cook!""[Tech] Now hiring new technical support reps!""[Manufacturing] Need production line workers!"

Good luck!

Abrupt West 11th Fred Meyer Closure?

I had a grocery delivery scheduled this morning. I got a notification that the shopper had arrived and then a cancelation notification due to the store being closed.

Sure enough, when you try to call the store, it hangs up on you within a few minutes.

Anyone know what’s going on with that?

Food Where to get "fresh out of the oven" SOFT Apple Cider Doughnuts?!

Please dont suggest Thistle Down Farms. Some of the worst cider doughnuts I've ever had and I'm disappointed that people in this area accept this standard of an Apple Cider Doughnut. Hard and flavorless. I have given them probably 3 chances over the years and everytime I get more and more disappointed and question why I keep trying.

I'm willing to drive outside of town.

No Kings! Go Ducks!

• Upvotes

Rally this afternoon for the No Kings cause for American democracy in Alton Baker park.

Game at 8:00 this evening at Autzen Stadium: Oregon Ducks versus Nebraska Cornhuskers. As Autzen is next to Alton Baker, many people cross the footbridge and head to Autzen through the park.

Maybe there's an opportunity this evening to encourage Duck supporters to also support American democracy more actively. It needs a positive approach, though.

No Kings! Go Americans! No Huskers! Go Ducks!

Misleading This flyer is a bit contradictory

In the first paragraph it argues the money could go to anything and in the second it argues it can't go to city priorities. I don't feel strongly about the measure but I found the self contradicting mailer funny.

Potentially misinformation New Parking Meters Downtown Are Defective

New parking meters downtown seem to be defective...

Got my first parking ticket in like 9 years...

Parked, punched in 1hr 30min, swiped the card, got a confirmation, but then nothing happened.... I swear it said like 1hr 34min when I walked away, then when I got back, I'd gotten a ticket a half hour after I'd parked... checked my bank's app and the card wasn't charged....

Going to appeal because this is BS and they seem to be defective, I don't think this was user error, way to go @ City of Eugene, wasting more money on absolute trash.... wish this wasn't to be expected.

Can Eugene's government do anything right?

More news at 11pm

Frustrated Line/Prep Cook

Hi all, I’m local to Eugene and I’ve been in the service industry in a few different areas over the last few years here (commercial, restaurant, private kitchens, etc). Why is there such a high volume of jaded, alcoholic chefs in high paying positions that never seem to have to do more than they want to? It seems like at every job I’ve had here, especially my current one in a smaller kitchen, I’ve had to fight tooth and nail to not just get most of my coworkers to keep up but also management. I know my bitching might be futile but I’m at my wits end. I work hard to get shit done and try my best to remain positive at work while I have people twice my age doing half the work and bitching the whole time. I’m also sober as of this year and working around so much alcohol has been frustrating as well. I’d hate to end up sneaking liquor in the walk in just to get through my shift, it’s sad. If anyone has any leads on a kitchen that would value a hard worker and team player please let me know, I have all the energy in the world, every evening all week, and 8 years of experience to offer.

Does anyone know how often the drop boxes are emptied? I worry about vandalism.
And everyone should ideally be using them for their ballots, as the mail is iffy.

News Gift link: J.H. Baxter stormwater treatment system lapsed after president left prison

Earlier this year, J.H. Baxter & Co. in west Eugene stopped running its stormwater system that treats contamination before it flows out of the facility and into a canal that lines a residential area, according to a summary of a state-convened meeting recently made public.

Water sampling and reporting also lapsed during the three months company President Georgia Baxter-Krause served her 90-day prison sentence late last year for violating environmental laws, according to the meeting summary.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency is now conducting an expedited cleanup at the facility that it hopes will eventually end the need for stormwater treatment.

Good places to go for a drive and just sit?

Any places in the area (up to ~30 mins to an hr) outside of the city to drive to and just sit, maybe watch the sun set? My life has gotten very busy as of late so I'd just like to do something different for a couple hours. Thanks.

Looking for house/apt recs- Not crap, not luxury

My husband and are moving (back) to Eugene this coming year. We would likely move this summer, or in the fall as school starts back up again.

When we lived in Eugene last year, we spent every last dime we had for a small, cute house near campus. It was wonderful, but this time around, we would like to spend less. However, every house I’m seeing is typically $2,000+ a month (not including utilities), which is pretty pricey*. As underclassmen, we lived in somewhat crappy, cheap apartments- so this time, we’re looking for a middle ground.

I would absolutely prefer a town house or individual home, but, I fear they are likely going to be out of our budget. Looking for some apartment (or any other setup) suggestions that are not junky, but also not luxury living. We aren't interested in having roommates. We don’t need to be right by campus, but would prefer to be in Eugene over Springfield. And, I would kill for a kitchen that wasn't miniature.

Open to any suggestions or input! If you LOVE(D) your apartment, house, or townhouse, please drop the details.

** We don’t have an exact budget at the moment, as I don’t really know what we can expect if we’re looking for 1 or 2 bedrooms just for the two of us. Ideally $1500 or less, but probably would have to push towards $1800, i'm guessing. 😬 The more affordable, the better. Just not quite sure yet what is realistic. Rent is outrageous these days.

Both Florence and Eugene reported positive detections of H5N1(avian) flu: of 17 detections reported in the US, all were in Oregon.

Where can I get my sheet of plywood cut?

I have some plywood that I am needing to get cut into 2inch strips for a project. I went to Home Depot and they said they cannot cut that many or that length. I ended up having them cut them into more transportable sizes, but I am still needing them cut into 2” strips. Anyone know where I could get this done? I’m happy to pay for it.
