Developer News Beta Patch - 1.4.3

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello everyone! Today we're releasing patch 1.4.3 which seeks to adress some of the issues found in 1.4.2

Primarily, we've made some changes to Ottoman set up, and gave Decentralization back the Subject Loyalty bonus.

Date: October 22nd, 2026
Checksum: b5ff

Gameplay

Government

  • French ducal vassals now have -20 Loyalty to their overlord instead of -25.
  • French Feudal Nobility no longer reduces Subject Loyalty by 10.
  • Colonial migrations started by a cabinet action now stop when that cabinet seat is removed, instead of draining the chosen province indefinitely.
  • Estates no longer keep a culture or religion that none of their pops have anymore.
  • The Dutch Republic government reform now grants +20% trade income.
  • Redraw Parliament Agendas no longer displays a parliament support requirement it does not have.
  • Estate private regiments are now only recalled when the estate actually rises in revolt, not as soon as a dormant rebel faction forms.

Economy

  • Food imports no longer lower a market’s displayed monthly food balance.
  • Trade Range has been tweaked so trading with distant Markets has a Maintenance cost penalty again, but getting more Trade Range reduces the penalty.

Society

  • Dhimmi pops no longer lose satisfaction for following a different religion or culture, which used to drive them into religious revolts.

Diplomacy

  • Decentralization once again grants up to +30 Subject Loyalty, up from +15.
  • Fix crash when loading a save and the played country has more than 8 International Organizations
  • Personal union partners with a succession law that picks any character in the country now get an heir from the shared ruler’s court.
  • Expired diplomatic proposals to the player now block the same AI re-offer as a decline, and no longer show a decline pop-up.
  • Vassals of a transferred subject no longer become independent when it is lowered to its new overlord’s rank.

Military

  • Bolster Imperial Army can no longer pull an HRE member back into a war while it has a truce with the enemy war leader, such as after a separate peace.
  • The war goal can no longer be taken in a separate peace with a subject whose overlord leads the war.
  • Independent operations armies keep a siege until its locations are taken

Geopolitics

  • Familial Governors that are not in the war are no longer occupied when their overlord unconditionally surrenders.
  • Familial governors are now released instead of becoming vassals when their overlord is annexed by a country that cannot hold them.
  • Non-Catholic subjects of Catholic countries are now bound by the Treaty of Tordesillas colonial claims.

Other

  • Anatolian beyliks, including the Ottomans, now start with Nobility Controlled Serfdom instead of Royal Marriage Rights, so the Ottoman Serfdom vs Free Subjects value no longer drifts towards Free Subjects.
  • Anatolian beyliks, including the Ottomans, no longer start with the Feudal Mercenary Contracts and Primacy of Nobility privileges.
  • The Ottomans now start with Serfdom vs Free Subjects at -50 instead of 0.
  • Reduced the Estate Power granted by Dhimmi privileges, which was far higher than other estates' privileges.
  • A country now keeps only its most recent Historical Capital, which gives 80 proximity instead of 50.
  • Feitorias, trading posts and trade offices now earn slightly more from trade than they cost to maintain.
  • Feitorias now cost 200 gold to build instead of 800.
  • Wrong-religion ruler penalties now only apply below 0 Tolerance and scale with how negative it is, and the alert tooltip shows the scaled values.
  • The leader of the Middle Kingdom can now unlock Direct Domestic Migration in the Age of Traditions.
  • Camels are now demanded in Mongolia and Xinjiang, and countries originating there can unlock Camel Cavalry.

Content

Setup

  • Added a unique country history text for Granada.
  • Moved the "Almerían Silk" location modifier from El-Mariyya to Orgiva and renamed it "Alpujarran Silk", so the Silk output bonus applies to a location that produces Silk.
  • Corrected the Moers dynasty name (was "Mors") and set Friedrich von Moers' culture to Low Franconian.
  • Renamed the Nasrid dynasty from "Banū Naṣr" to "Nasrid" so Granada's name reads "Nasrid Emirate of Granada" again.
  • Renamed the "Lower Yik" area to "Lower Yaik" after the Yaik river.

Situations

  • Fixed the "The Signatories Fall" outcome of the "Treaty of Lisboa" situation listing raw variable names instead of readable requirements.
  • Hundred Years' War - Both sides now start the war with extra War Enthusiasm that fades over two years, so the AI no longer accepts a White Peace right after the war begins
  • Italian Wars - A former Holy Roman Emperor is now removed from the Holy Roman League when the new Emperor takes over its leadership, unless their capital is in Italy

Disasters

  • The "Messenger from Byzantium" event (byzantine_succ_crisis.16) can no longer take gold from the Ottomans when Byzantine income is negative
  • The second option of the "Smyrna Reclaimed!" event (fate_of_the_phoenix.2) now raises the Merchants Quarters to its maximum level when Smyrna belongs to a subject

Events

  • Edward III’s sons John of Gaunt and Edmund of Langley now have Philippa of Hainault as their mother, and are no longer added on top of sons Philippa already bore.
  • Fixed the Aragonese "The Mallorcan Issue" event (flavor_ara.200) having one option with only benefits and the other with only penalties.
  • Granadan event "Assassination of Yusuf I" can now fire between 1340 and 1360
  • The Mughal event "Grand Trunk Road" can now fire between the 1650s and 1821
  • The Granadan event "A Demand from Morocco" is now properly a major event that shows up for Morocco
  • Fixed exploration event options giving gold and "0.00" progress changes while exploration funding is at 0% unless player changes the funding to 0 when the event is open and the game is paused.
  • Fixed defying the Jurchen Confederation "Bid for Unification" policy (jurchen_confederation_events.16) freeing members from their existing overlords, such as Yuan, without a war.
  • Fixed the "A Wattasid Conspiracy?" (flavor_mor.6) and "The Passing of Sidi Ahmad ou Moussa" (flavor_mor.25) Moroccan events showing the placeholder titles "CONSPIRATION" and "GRAVEYARD" on the Events tab.
  • Fixed the "Simeon Ivanovich's Campaigns against Novgorod" event (flavor_mos.1) never firing for Muscovy when a Novgorodian location bordering it is released as a subject.
  • The requirements of the "The Phoenix Reborn" (d008_flavor_byz.6) and "A Common Enemy" (flavor_byz.1503) events no longer show unlocalized variable names
  • Allowed countries with ports that employ Christopher Columbus to always launch the "Voyage into the Western Ocean" expedition, and made the Christopher Columbus events (flavor_por.1, flavor_cas.1) only pass him on to fallback countries with ports.

Government

  • Rebalanced the "Maẓālim Court" (monthly legitimacy +0.05 to +0.10, nobles satisfaction penalty -10% to -5%), "Bayt al-Māl" (now +10% cabinet efficiency and, when poorly funded, -5% tax efficiency, replacing its max tax and estate enrichment effects) and "Dīwān al-Ḥajj" (conversion speed +10% to +15%) bureaucracies.
  • Removed the Crown estate from the liked and disliked estates of the generic and Muslim bureaucracies, where it had no effect because the Crown has no satisfaction.
  • Legacy of Rustamids will only be visible to Maghrebi Ibadi countries that started as such (e.g Mzab, Touggourt)
  • Revoking Bad Privileges of Tunis now grants additional rewards
  • Moved the "+1 Max Bureaucracy Slots" from the "Byzantine Law" policy to Byzantium's "Porphyrogennetos" court policy, so Greek realms that can't enact any bureaucracy no longer get an unusable slot.
  • The "School of First Letters" government reform now requires a Christian religion, so Muslim Iberian-culture countries such as Granada can no longer adopt it.
  • The decisions to built a Cathedral and Great Madrasa will now show their base cost in the tooltip of the decision
  • Decisions which require the Prikazi Government Reform to be unlocked are no longer visible for countries which can not unlock the Reform
  • The Privilege of Koszyce Decision now requires Poland to be a monarchy to be taken
  • Mamluk Government Reform is locked for Muslim Religion groups only

Society

  • The "Invite Foreign Cleric" religious action now offers clerics of the selected religion instead of only Catholic ones
  • Fixed rulers gaining multiple stacks of the "Took the Cross" modifier when winning a Crusade alongside fiefdoms or personal unions sharing their ruler.

Diplomacy

  • Fixed the Colonial Charter "Form Colonial Nation" goal confirmation popup showing raw localization keys instead of its title, description and category.

Advances

  • Advances now list the policies, estate privileges, monuments and government reform they are required for in their tooltip.
  • Restored the missing "Talmudic Academies" and "Kabbalistic Tradition" Jewish advances that were removed by mistake from the game.

Achievements

  • The Lion of the North Achievement can now also be achieved in a defensive war

Other

  • Fixed the shared Iberian country history text using religion names instead of adjectives ("Christianity and Islam peoples").
  • Prevented Zayyanid Pretenders Decision from being usable when the country is at war

Onboarding

Hints

  • Updated Castile's starting advice to reflect that Granada already starts as its tributary, and fixed two typos.

2D Art

Flags

  • Reworked the Andorran flag: it now shows Urgell above Béarn and Foix, with the quartered arms including the Catalan pallets appearing from the "Age of Revolutions".
  • Spain now flies the 1785 rojigualda in the Age of Revolutions as an absolute monarchy too, instead of falling back to the Cross of Burgundy.

AI

Diplomacy

  • The AI no longer accepts a transferred subject that is the target of a Crusade or Jihad, which used to drag it into the holy war.
  • Castile now seeks better relations with Aragon

Military

  • AI no-CB wars now get a Show Superiority wargoal instead of starting with no wargoal.

Interface

Alerts

  • Disband Levies alert will now directly ask if levies want to be disbanded instead of taking the player to the Army/Navy panel -

Panels

  • Expeditions will now show on the events window the status of it's different variables, such as provisions, piety, retinue, etc -
  • Added a new Filter for "Industry has Promotion" where it will highlight any Location inside an Area that has active Industry Promotions -

Audio

Music

  • Fixed music reverb volume issue on map

  • Added player name in country view when in MP

Beta Made a mod so coalitions actually make you give back what you took

Something always bugged me about coalitions in EU5. You eat half your neighbours, everyone gangs up on you, you lose, and then they just humiliate you and take some money. Your borders stay the same and the antagonism keeps hanging around for decades anyway.

So I made Coalition Demands. Now if a coalition beats you, it takes back the land you grabbed in the last 30 years and gives it to whoever you took it from, even countries that couldn't join because they still had a truce with you. If you ate a whole country, it comes back. Vassals you made recently go free too. And since you gave the land back, the antagonism for it goes away with it, so you're not stuck being the world's villain for the next 50 years. Humiliation is gone from coalition wars completely.

It works the other way too. If you beat the coalition and dissolve it, its members drop most of their antagonism towards you, so you don't get the same coalition again right away.

Coalitions also feel a bit more alive. Your rivals and neighbouring hegemons can join even if you never touched them, the Emperor shows up when you go after HRE members, and the strongest country leads the war instead of some tiny bishopric that happened to declare first.

It makes blobbing harder for you and the AI, so it's more for fun than for historical results. Most of it can be tweaked in the Community Mod Framework settings, which you'll need anyway.

Let me know how it plays for you.

Discussion we need a country-collapse mechanic

it really bugs me to see megablob bohmia in the late game or hungary survive in its big empire-form.

When playing colonial/imperialisitc it's also annying to see something like single indian states strong enough to single handedly conquer all of europe or the khmer empire forever thriving. The same goes to the mayans for example.

I believe there should be disaster for certain historical nations (the ones I just named for example), so that they can make room for new countries. (similar to the delhi one, it works well)

India for example: even if there isnt a historical mughal empire in the early 1700s all the countries in its respective area should still be part of a big civil war/collapse disaster.

Now you could argue that that might kill the fun for the player, but why not make the situation manageble for a human and programm the ai to mess up.

This would also adress the allegations of eu5 being a nothing-ever-changes-simulator

Behold the results of my latest project : Italy where we try to push as much DEV as possible. Started as padua (see earlier post) -> Tuscany -> Sardinia -> Two Sicilies -> Italy. Clicked on every dev (+) modifier I could and kept the cabinet on DEV as much as possible. Consolidated Italy and kept the clock rolling until 1637.

If anybody knows how to reliably get a Architectural Visionary as your leader as a italian city state let us know.

The DEV map is kind-of underwhelming. Rich germans with their pesky HRE free cities (+0.002 flat dev bonus!) are outshining me on the map. I guess to get the brightest little star on the map one can go Emilian Padua and stay in the HRE as a free city. AFAIK you can only have one urban location in your country to keep the free city reform, but your megacity "countryside" can technically be massive.

The literacy map looks better, kudos to the moroccans. The political map also looks very good compared to some earlier patches.

Looking forward to the new patch and to chase the new achievements.

Beta Markets exporting all the foods is an issue in 1.4x

Pretty much the title. It's not like there is no pop growth, but even in the 1600s with food being the cheapest good in my markets (to counter the food problem) I can't get my markets to even break even.

I have over urbanized as I saw this playing in multiplayer. We decided to convert over as its going live next week anyway. I mass built all food RGOs to counter this but find my markets are exporting large amount of food to the colonies as well as foreign powers (my rival Portugal no less).

Please please please allow us to ban exports of certain goods or food in general. My population is still growing but its a snails pace compared to previous builds and more importantly than the other player I'm playing against. (Italy V Byz)

Discussion FRANCE 1.4.2 Open Letter to Paradox

🔊please listen for a sec!

The current issues with France in 1.4.2 and the changes to decentralization makes France almost unplayable and the AI wins every single time without fail in every game I've played in Europe.

Not only is this not realistic! It is also game breaking considering how much content in Europe revolves around a rising and/or dominant France in Western Europe! (Italian wars, wars of religion, Castilian civil war, and 100 years war most importantly).

I haven't come to just complain however! I have ideas! (Not a game designer so they're probably not too good)

1st make Appagnages the only ones affected by the "French Feudal Nobility" reform's loyalty hit! This makes the the most powerful subjects the ones more likely to side with the English which may not be historical but is more balanced!

2nd, instead of "Decentralization" making subjects more loyal, make it "noble power/satisfaction", this not only incentivizes the move towards centralization like the decentralization nerf but also gives the player a more of a choice over who they empower and make their money off of in the early to mid game!

3rd make it so during the 100 years war situation as goes on a modifier is slowly ticking up, doing 2 things!

A) Making French integration of subjects cheaper therefore faster

B) Making England weaker in the form of war exhaustion ticking while at war.

(Personally I would love to see a "momentum mechanic for England specifically, where as long as they continue to win the can accrue warscore more easily, but I understand if that's something your holding for the "Auld Alliance" DLC)

4th rebalance "Strength vs Overlord" it is an insanely inaccurate measure for disloyalty that becones more of an annoyance than anything else most of the time.

5th finally, make the "French ducal" government reform -10 or -15 loyalty to overlord, -25 makes the. Completely impossible to work with and becomes something the French AI can't play around.

That's about it honestly. Once again I'm not a game dev so my takes could be cooked lmao

P.S. everyone say THANK YOU RYAGI!

Question Is there a way to have decent control in France when playing as England?

I’m playing as England, and I conquered a lot of France (won the 100 Years War - yay!).

As you’d expect, I had pretty poor control on the continent. Locations by the coast are OK, especially up near Flanders, and especially as I build harbour capacity, but anything inland is terrible.

I thought OK, maybe later on I’ll be able to build buildings to sort it out.

Well it’s later on now, and as far as I can tell there’s nothing I can do about it.

Can’t build Local Governer because it’s not connected by road to London. Can’t build Naval Governor because… well I’m not really sure – I can build it in Ireland. What exactly is the rule for those?

So, is there a solution for this, or is unified France+England not really a thing, gotta use vassals?

Discussion The fact that roads exists between provinces and not in one province is a realistic gimmick I personally hate

When we didn't have other sources of control it was ok because all you had to do was start with capital and click every province to maximise proximity. But now I have to check every location to which proximity source it is closest to. I would be happy to pay 2 or 3 times more for the roads just to avoid this busywork especially late game

Question Where should I move my governors?

Thumbnail

Just annex Halych as Poland through PU, i'll be annexing Lithuania later and also Austria same way. Expanded as far as Praque and I think I'm done going west for now. Next target is extending my influence as far as Constantinopole.

I'm not sure how to place my governors. I got roads maxxed out everywhere and in general I think having them on western side is more beneficial since more wealth is there. I'm thinking about moving capital to Warsaw maybe and having one governor in Pest when I annex Austria, but what to do now?

Question How do you end a Regency in Teutonic order (v1.4.2)?

The hochmeister died and there was no heir, so it began a Regency. But I dont see this ever ending because there is no option to install any other ruler, I cant change the succession law, and I cant designate anyone.

Its 1350 and I have had a Regency for 10 years already with no option to do anything about it.

The default succession law sounds like it'd be an election but no event is firing.

Advice Wanted Milan Run

I started a Milan run on 1.4.2. Wanted to hear your advice about the best locations to place a local govenor and which industries should be promotet in which regions.
My capital has already moved to Pavia and my first goal is to conquer northern Italy and then step by step the rest of Italy, Sicily and Sardina Corsica.
Maybe you also have advice what other places are interesting to conquer, like Tunis or something else.

Is it ok to have almost 500 income by 1410? I didn't really urbanize. Just RGO, roads + construction in the capital. It is the income with 4 bureacracies on the balance and all other expenses. Maybe this is a result of having a megapolis, and it was intended to be so.
