I know there are other posts like this, but I wanted to voice this myself.
I will FOREVER GLAZE Shintani's work.
I never liked the DBS Anime's artstyle all that much, to be honest. The highlights that made the characters look oiled up really wasn't it for me. Yamamuro's DBS art does look good without the highlights, yes, but in my opinion, he's out of his prime, which was him in DBZ. He really needed to be replaced for DBS: Broly, which is where Shintani comes in. Shintani's art has something that makes it INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT for me to look away from the screen, even the fan arts too.
It really reminds me of Toriyama's old art in OG Dragon Ball. The simple line work, soft shapes and more dynamic style just speaks to me better than the more stiff and rigid style of DBS and Heroes. It allowed for smoother animation which was something I treasured in DBS: Broly.
The hair on the characters, especially Goku, Vegeta and Broly, actually looking like hair and flowing with each movement or disturbance like OG Dragon Ball, biggest example being SSJ Namek Goku (both anime and manga) and not being stiff, spiky bananas, looked so majestic to me. It felt like seeing the original series again.
The color palette of his designs was just CHEF'S KISS for me. It was very vibrant and pleasing to the eyes. It made the movie look so beautiful throughout it's run-time. When I do digital art one day, I'm definitely using this kind of color pallete
I also loved the fact that Shintani brought back Goku's Namek design, only changing the yellow lines on his boots to red. I missed the loose hanging ends of his belt that made his model have more flair during movement in animation. Incredibly nostalgic for me.
The biggest issue this style fixed for me was the Super Saiyan Blue transformation, one of my favourite transformations in the franchise. The blue looked so forcefully bright upon its introduction. I didn't really like it when I first saw it. Shintani and the animation team actually fixed that by toning down the brightness of the blue. It looked SO MUCH better than whatever DBS did, especially Goku's orange gi blending well with the aura. I also loved the aura looking like a flame with a bit of purple in it (watch the animation of the aura closely to see what I'm talking about, especially for Gogeta Blue).
It might've sounded like it, but I don't hate the DBS anime. It's just that it definitely needed some improvements where it missed the mark for me.
So far, the DBS remake has been looking great so far, but I still don't like that the highlights are still there in scenes where completely unnecessary.
That's my rant on this post.
Yuya Takahashi's art is my second favourite artstyle, by the way. He was spectacular in DBS: Broly, and in the TOP too.
I HONESTLY HOPE that they continue to use his style for future Dragon Ball projects. That would be an absolute dream-come-true.
