[UPDATED] "What Bike Should I Get?" Buying & Selling advice Mega Thread

The Mega thread for buying and selling advice is back, and will be updated biweekly!

There are far too many posts of people asking for personalized bike buying and selling advice. Per previous Mod actions, any posts about bike buying/selling advice that are not in this thread will be removed.

Here, those interested in giving feedback about your purchase or listing can offer it without every subreddit member being subjected to the same post dozens of times per day.

Topics to keep in the mega thread:

  • What bike should I get?
  • Is this a good deal?
  • Is this a fair price to sell my bike for?
  • What can I get for $xx?

What's up guys? It's still a work in progress - and I'm new-ish to managing a discord server, so if you have experience/want to help out shoot me a message!

To be clear: This is NOT a replacement for the sub. It's totally optional. If there's interest, I'd be open to streaming the SX races in the server. The Discord server will also be great for asking questions that would violate our rules in here such as asking what bikes are worth and what not.

Chutes and Ladders

One of my favorite features at swingarm city. We call it the Chutes and Ladders, but it's really all chute and no ladder. A bit hidden, but a total riot every time.

A beautiful evening on the bikes in Swingarm City.

I also realize my check engine light is on. It does that whenever my high beams are switched on. Italian electronics!

Community Question Upgrade or lateral move? (XR -> KLX300R)

I'm only a few months into riding. Bought a dirt cheap non running 95 XR250R over the summer, wrenched on it a bunch, lots of new parts and been enjoying it. My first ever bike, at age 36. That said, I'm 6'6" about 230lbs geared up. I have risers plus Windham bars and the most dropped foot pegs I could find for this old XR (96-04 has better options). It feels just fine when standing, seated is cramped but I expect that with anything at my height. Suspension is SOFT on this bike and old as hell nothing in it. If I keep it I'll be putting stiffer springs front and rear, which is some $$$ but not a ton. Now the KLX300R: less than 10 hours on it, and within a couple grand of what I could sell my XR for. Electric start and EFI sounds nice. No need for the suspension work my XR needs (also thinking bearings). Better aftermarket support. I'm sure more capable, but I'm also happy with the XR being that I'm a middle aged dad with zero interest in jumps or riding trail 4th gear pinned. Just chugging through PNW singletrack. A used XCW seems like the automatic best choice for me height and riding style wise, but a simple reliable machine that I'll never do a rebuild on really appeals to me, and I'm not racing or doing hard Enduro ever. Or just keep the trusty old XR and suck it up and do the suspension work? Anyone have any words of advice on this? Thanks!

Any of you not like PNW singletrack riding?

Ive spent years on ATVs and SXS's. Then went to a KLX300 dual sport. Bikes are where I belong, no question...but then i wanted to change things up...sold the klx and got a Beta 2-stroke. I had mx bikes in my teens.

Its awesome fun. First summer back on a 2 stroke but I find myself stressing over riding singletracks out here....nothing similar happened before with other machines. My skills are up there too.

My issue is im more interested in the adventure and destination than the riding. And singletrack riding is 100% about the ride - i want to be able to go 100 miles, pack all of my gear, and have a stress-free day

Its like a 4-stroke trail bike is a laid-back buddy you can count on and you two have a calm day - a 2 stroke is like hanging out with a coked out stripper who stays up all night partying.

...not experience with the latter ...just assuming.

Mechanical Help 2004 yz250 struggling to stay running

I’ve owned my 2004 YZ250 for about 4 years. Two years ago, I had the top end rebuilt, and about a month later I was riding wide open in 4th gear when the bike suddenly bogged and died.
It started again afterward but never ran right, so I parked it for two years.
Recently got it running again, but it won’t idle without throttle. Sometimes it revs perfectly fine, then randomly bogs like it’s running out of gas. Eventually, it became difficult to start.
I’ve drained the old gas, added fresh premix, and inspected the piston and cylinder through the exhaust port. No visible scoring, and the kickstarter feels like it has good compression, although I haven’t tested it with a gauge.
I’m thinking carburetor, reeds, or possibly top-end issues. Trying to diagnose it myself before paying a mechanic.
The attached video is from when the issue first happened two years ago. A family member who’s experienced with working on engines was trying to diagnose it and suspected the carburetor. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction , I’d like to learn with this bike! Thank you in advance.

2022 Honda Crf150rb

The bike started to start a bit hard but wasn’t too bad just a couple kicks I checked the valves they were off so I wanted to fix the valves. The parts took about 1-2 months to come so the bike was just sitting the whole time. I did the valves then the bike didn’t start at all I clean the carb I even replaced the mid body gaskets now the bike sometimes starts with starting fluid but only starts for couple seconds then dies.

How do you find the “non running” bikes?

Title is exactly that. How do you guys find those non running bikes? I’ve been looking for like a week and I truly can’t find a single one. Been looking on marketplace for YZs in my area in non running condition, seems like everyone takes care of their bikes🤣

I went to start my bike that I got today and something snapped so now it’s about as floppy as my dick.
Does anyone know what is causing this before I start tearing it apart?

Title: Alternatives to Twin Air Filter Oil and Cleaner for a CFMOTO 450MT

Hi everyone,

I have a Twin Air 152622FR foam air filter designed for the Yamaha Ténéré 700, and I've purchased an aluminum adapter kit to fit it to my CFMOTO 450MT.

However, I live in Taiwan, and both Twin Air filter oil and filter cleaner are currently out of stock. The local dealer told me they won't be available until the end of the year.

The Chinese seller who sold me the filter suggested using gear oil as an alternative. I've also heard that engine oil could be used to soak the foam filter, then squeezed out to remove the excess oil.

For cleaning, would it be safe to use kerosene to clean the filter, followed by washing it with a neutral dishwashing detergent? Or could these alternatives damage the foam or affect its filtration performance?

Could anyone recommend suitable alternative products or methods for cleaning and oiling this foam air filter, preferably using products that are readily available in Taiwan?

Thanks in advance for your help!

There’s just something about older bikes that are well taken care of that has a sweet spot for me.

Does this sound healthy?

I just got this back from being rebuilt, full trans rebuild, piston, and top end of motor. Just started making this whirring noise that gets worse as you go and stops when clutch is pulled. Any suggestions as to what it could be? I have literally done the 3 heat cycles, oil change, and rode it less than an hour already making this noise. It’s a 2006 crf450r
