SubReddit Announcement: A New Rule and Deputy Moderators

Hello everyone,

I know, you folks barely hear from us moderators. Truth is, we're both super busy and really only show up when called upon. I recently stumbled upon a post here bemoaning an up-tick of low-effort posts where people expect an unrealistic amount of hand-holding without much apparent thought of their own on the level of ask they are making. Therefore, a few changes around here to help keep this place tidy:

  • A new rule! No low-effort posts:

Cosplayers are passionate craftspeople. The skills and knowledge that you come here seeking comes from effort born of that passion. If you would like help with your costume, all that we ask is that you show a bit of that effort yourself. Posts must show some time and thought from you on the project you are requesting help with, and some basic understanding of the scope it would entail. Not just a blanket "I want this, HELP PLEASE!"

  • New Deputy Moderators: I'd say I'm introducing you to these people, but you see from them more than you've ever seen from me. I've reached out to some of our most vocal commenters and granted them the power to moderate posts and comments. Rather than having to report rule-breaking posts, which they have been very good at, they now have the power to directly clean them up themselves. I'll still pop in if somebody needs to be banned or larger changes need to be made, but I've seen consistent great advice from these people, and I trust them to maintain the quality of discussion here on r/CosplayHelp. Everyone say thank you to:

Cosplay 101 answers to a lot of basics

First and foremost. Your health and safety is more important than 100% accuracy. If making or wearing the item will be dangerous or painful don’t do it.

Second, I’d add this info to the FAQ but it appears I don’t have enough karma to update it personally! If the info is in the FAQ I did not duplicate it here! (The FAQ is on the sidebar! It wasn’t visible before for some reason but it’s up now!)

This is not a comprehensive list, but I hope to be able to update it when I come across new or important information! I do hope if you’re looking for something not featured here, it will at least give you a base knowledge set on how to be able to search for what you’re looking for.

------------------GENERAL TIPS-----------------------------

(Where to find certain things, very basic crafting info)

EDIT TO REMOVE INFO ABOUT COSPLANNER APP, it doesn't appear to exist anymore!

-To find patterns, or specific props. These are host websites for artists or creators where they can sell things like Etsy, or Redbubble. Etsy is a fantastic place to look for patterns to make props or cosplay pieces, sometimes you can even find people open for commissions! Artists on instagram will almost always have links to their shops to buy things, so explore there too.

-To find cheaper clothing pieces, props, or things to be altered try thrift stores. So Goodwill or other small local resale shops. This will likely take more than one trip so don’t give up if you don’t get it in one go. Ebay is also a good place to check believe it or not, there’s just a slight learning curve to searching things to find what you want.

-Dance and Athletic apparel websites will have things like leotards, bodysuits, specialized undergarments etc. They’re going to be a little pricier but they’ll be good quality, durable, and 9 times out of 10 machine washable!

-Hardware stores, paintball and airsoft companies, military/paramilitary surplus, and second hand sports equipment stores may also be good places to check for bits and pieces. Paintball/airsoft will also have a variety of masks and helmets that can be painted and altered.

-VERY IMPORTANT FOR PROP WEAPONS: Always look into your local guidelines and convention rules to see what kinds of prop weapons are allowed! Some cons have strict policies on what can and cannot be brought in!

-Michael’s, Joann Fabrics, Hobby Lobby etc. and any local craft stores will have tons and tons of craft supplies. If you want to save money and keep up to date on sales check to see if you can join an email list. I know Joann’s has coupons in them all the time!

-You can buy a variety of brands of fabric paint from almost anywhere that sells craft supplies. This makes it easy to get designs or patterns on most fabrics. For changing the color of an entire garment I’d recommend dying it.

-Some fabrics can be dyed different colors very easily, some cannot. A good way to tell is if the fabric is natural (cotton, linen etc.) it is generally easier to dye. The more synthetic (fake) a fabric is the longer and slightly more complicated it will be. Tulip is an excellent dye brand and they offer both regular and synthetic dyes with nice simple instructions right on the packages!

-You can make stencils out of craft foam or thicker paper to make it easier to copy logos or symbols on whatever you’re making!

-Wig and contact websites are listed in the FAQ but there are companies like dental distortions that make tooth veneers that can take a cosplay to the next level!

-Hollywood makeup, FX, and costume professionals almost always have social media accounts they can be extremely helpful when it comes to reference images! For example the costumer who designed the Moon Knight suits has tons of detail and behind the scenes images on her instagram!

-Complicated cosplays can be simplified by boiling down the costume to its essentials the best way I’ve learned to do this is through toys or fan art. What things are essential to recognizing the character and what things could be left off! You don’t have to be 100% to be recognizable!

-If big all out cosplays aren’t your thing you can always try “bounding.” You’ll hear “Disneybounding” most often but you can do it with other things too of course! Disney doesn’t allow adults to dress as characters in their parks, but fans got creative. “Bounding” is more about matching colors, getting similar accessories, or finding just the right combination of things to make you think of the character. It’s hard to explain verbally but easy to understand once you look into it!

-Say you have an OC, and you want to cosplay your OC. That’s fine! Have at it! You’ve got no professional media to tie you down! All these tips can still help you find or make your cosplay!

-I do have a friendly reminder though, please remember you cannot expect people to know who your character is. And it’s not fair to get mad at them if they make a guess and the guess is wrong. A simple “Nope its an OC!” is plenty for most people! I’ve complimented plenty of cosplayers and asked about their cosplay only to find out it was an OC!

“Crossplay” safety

-DO NOT BIN D YOUR CHEST WITH ACE BANDAGES IT’S UNSAFE. Compression tops or more heavy duty sports bras are much safer. If the character has an open shirt you can use wig tape/skin tape to hold the material of the shirt to your skin. If you do not have breasts but are looking to add some to a cosplay you can always pad a bra. You’ll want to measure your chest around your pectorals, that will be the band size, the letter size will be the cup. So a 34A means your chest is 34 inches around and A would be the cup size you would be looking to fill. (I have more on taking measurements later.) Companies now sell latex chests with or without breasts for people looking to be the most accurate they can.

-You can always just “genderbend” the thing and cosplay them as the same gender you are. It’s okay. People do it all the time and it’s very widely accepted. There’s also a third, more neutral option, don’t obviously genderbend the thing? You don’t have to call attention to the fact that you’re not the same gender as the character you’re cosplaying.

-An example of what I’m trying to explain: I generally read as female, but have cosplayed Johnny Cage one of the male characters from Mortal Kombat. His base look is shirtless, with his own first name tattooed across his chest. The only change I made was putting “Johnny” on a crop top. I didn’t “feminize” the rest of the outfit or go out of my way to be read as male. There is a “middle option” when it comes to presentation and cosplay. At the end of the day everybody knows it’s just a costume.

-This tip might seem dumb, but you’re going to have to trust me here. This mainly applies to people looking to make large costume pieces or props by hand. People who are already kind of intermediate with their skills. If you’re stuck on something go see how furries would make it. Not kidding. I’ve made all kinds of non-furry things with tutorials put on the internet by a furry. The vast majority of them are fun, friendly people and the community as a whole is WILDLY talented and creative. You only ever really hear about the bad apples.

A big question I see here is “what is that piece of clothing?” That’s a good question! Here are some links to historical fashion databases! They’re all arranged a little differently BUT this is a place to start looking for what specific pieces of clothing or styles are called!

Here’s another important pro tip.

It’s okay.

Your cosplay doesn’t have to be perfect.

Cosplay is for fun and if it doesn’t feel fun or rewarding don’t do it. Other con goers and cosplayers aren’t going to judge you. If they do for some reason and try to make you feel bad about it, that says more about THEM and their personality than your ability. Everybody has to start somewhere. Nobody should be ashamed of learning and practicing and getting better. You can always go back and fix things or redo whole cosplays later on after your skills develop. This is a hobby and you have the right to participate in said hobby your own way.

I can add theatrical or FX makeup tips? things like scars, bruises, old age makeup, or like changing the face shape with very specific contouring?

I also have a draft of Convention tips similar to this post, would that be helpful as well?

Before and after of the feather

I got it soaked and blow dried it, then just got it damp, tried to brush it out with paint brush while damp then blow dried it again. After that I just played with it and fluffed back it up with my hands/fingers and some tweezers !

Question about dyeing/painting a costume.

Post image
3 Upvotes

So I want to do a custom senshi and would want to dye/paint/air brush or otherwise get this cosplay black. It is 100% polyester and I know it's hard to get it pure black with just dye. Wondering if anyone has any tips to achieve this. I have already bought rit dyemore for synthetics and have a dedicated pot for dyeing. But wanted to ask for help before I do anything irreversible.

TLDR: Basically want to dye a 100% polyester Sailor Jupiter Cosplay black or as close to black as possible.

Tips and Suggestions for my Rabbid full body suit? Any last minute changes to make to the shape before I apply fabric?

Thumbnail

I've been making this since September and I currently have VERY limited materials and only 6 yards of white fabric for most the rabbid (Im 5'6 1/2), and 1 yard of peach fabric. I really only have foam scraps and not enough foam to make any major shaping changes, although i do plan to make the arms shorter. I'm wondering what the last changes I could make before putting on the fabric. I really don't have much tape either (like half a roll left, so what's the best way to approach putting the foam on using different pattering methods or not patterning at all. I got a crisp 12 dollars left, so money for other materials is kinda out of the windows unless a miracle happens. Please and thank you. Also, one last thing, i do aim for accuracy, but I'm fine with it losing some if comfort and weight affect that, although I do like the more rounded ball like look, and im using the last photo as some inspiration too.

Accessory A mad max brace that doesn't actually brace my knee?

Thumbnail

So i had the idea to create a brace like max's as just a general outfit accessory to wear cuz it looks so dope

So just measure our some steel strips, make a squeaky hinge, bolt some old leather belts, bolt on a bottom piece that hooks under my shoe, easy

BUT thats just a leg brace, and im concerned wearing one of those without needing one will develop some kinda dependency or imbalance? Aswell as just discomfort if i make one too one to one

I dont care for complete screen accuracy, any tips on how i could make something like this that doesn't brace my knee

Spray bottle for a dye gradient

Post image
2 Upvotes

is it possible to use a spray bottle to create a dye gradient on fabric? the fabric i’m using is broadcloth and the dye is black rit fabric dye- i’d dip the bottom of the garment (a cloak) in the dye for max darkness, then use a spray bottle to add a gradient upwards. the attached image is the ideal result. if this is not possible, any suggestions would be appreciated

Wig Buy or DIY Wig?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I know many people probably consider this a very low effort costume, and I know it’s nothing special but I’ve wanted to be Wayne Campbell for years now. I was just hoping to get some input and maybe some expertise on wigs.

Normally I wouldn’t wear a wig because I have a sweaty head, but my hair isn’t the vibe. I’ve got the hat, which I would probably wear over the wig at all times. I’ve struggling to decide what wig route to go down.

The second picture is the least birds-nesty looking wig that’s meant to actually look like Wayne’s hair. It is close to his hair with his hat off, but I’m not seeing it when I look at stills from the rest of the movie.

The last picture is a wig I found just doing my own search. The curtain bangs kind of spoke to me, and the color isn’t bad. My thought was that I could trim the length up enough so that it actually resembles his hair with the hat on. It’s got a little more body, and the bangs could work.

Is that feasible? Would I make a mess of it? Am I better off just sticking to the designated Wayne Wig? What could I do to give myself the most authentic hair to go along with the costume? I’m good at ideas but sometimes I underestimate the difficulty of execution.

Thank you for reading about my silly Halloween pickle!

hello everyone, i ordered these fangs for a vampire costume, and they came with thermoplastic beads. i believe due to the natural shape of my canine teeth they’re having trouble staying on, for whatever reason when i heat the beads and put it in the tooth, and ive dried my tooth very well, the solution just slips right off the tooth everytime. just order some flurodent in the hopes it may stick better, but was wondering just incase this doesn’t work if anyone knows if i’m doing something wrong or has a better suggestion to make it stick. thank you!

Prop Flying with 3D-printed cosplay prop parts?

Hi! I’m flying to another city soon for a cosplay event and would like to pack some 3D-printed parts for a katana and a prop gun in my checked luggage. Both props will be disassembled.

Are these allowed in carry-on or checked baggage? Has anyone flown with similar prop parts, and how did it go?

Prop Dry brushing PLA with metallics

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi there!

I would like to dry brush this 3d printed sceptre to get it looking decent in a short time. I'm very familiar with dry brushing miniatures but I have never done something like this.

What kind of paint and primer would you suggest? What kind of coat? I have heard of people using rub'n'buff. Will that hold without priming? Should I sand before priming?

Bonus dog. <3

Buying Custom Nightwing compression shirt cosplay?

I plan on cosplaying this casual version of Nightwing from the Redondo run.

I’m pretty sure an exact version doesn’t exist for sell, so I’m wondering if anyone knows a website or seller that can make a custom compression shirt based on the reference image. Ideally, I’d like something that looks as close to the original design as possible.

Has anyone had experience ordering custom compression shirts?

Can I enlarge the eye mesh holes on this mask without ruining it?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello, I'm looking to improve visibility through the eye mesh on this mask. When wearing it, the mesh strands obstruct my vision, making it difficult to see clearly.

I'm considering using small scissors to enlarge the individual holes, but I'm worried this might cause the mesh to unravel or fall apart. Has anyone tried this before?

Alternatively, I'm open to replacing the mesh entirely, but I'm unsure what material or hole size would work best.

My goal is to find a good balance between visibility and concealment. I want to see comfortably through the mask without my eyes being clearly visible from the outside.

Armor Need some help with HUNK Mask/helmet

Thumbnail

So for context this is a 3d printed with a Matte Finish set I got from a vendor, since I didn't have the skill nor resources to produce it, so I expected some issues. I'm prior military so I can sort of handle the helmet issues because I have my old ACH kits such as the pads and chin strap Mounts, but I was hesistant to drill into the Helmet, it sits fine but my concern is if it wobbles a bit that it'll fall off and thus can be easily damaged by rapid movements. Secondly... I notice some glaring issues I want to correct with the mask such as full red lens that aren't see through, maybe I can layer something over the current lens without needing to reseat these, since I've seen covers but I'm not to sure? It's not the biggest deal but I'd like to one way them, and then the gasmask itself has a see through part. I assumed that they left this space open since many people who get the this set especially since it's HUNK want to mount speakers or other tools. But I am unsure what I could mount myself in while covering it up decently without just layering a fabric glued in there.

Tldr: should I mount a chin strap/ how can I ensure the helmet stays on, can I layer something over the lens to one way red them so people can't see my eyes, and what can I put in the VGU / gasmask location / if voice changers how would I go about that. Thank you!

I am going to have to clean it up a bit since there's dust and weird resin left over as well but I'm pretty sure I can do that safely with a micro cloth.

I am VERY novice at this so please explain it like I'm a kindergardener if it's something i have to do 😭

What kind of glue would work best to glue Eva foam to latex bodysuit

I’ve been looking all over the Internet, and I can’t seem to find an answer
