Modpost Potential new rule - No Apps. Seeking community feedback

Greetings Community.

How do you feel about people sharing apps, looking for app development feedback, that kind of thing, within this community.

A lot of it is on the borderline of what is acceptable with our current rules (self-promotion not being allowed, no AI etc)

For me personally, it’s not what I think of as within the scope of this community. This place is somewhere for beginners to ask real people questions and for real people to answer. There are other subreddits for app sharing/recommendations/development.

And ultimately, advice for beginner cooks should not be “download an app”.

There is also the fact that most of these apps being promoted here are using AI to scrape existing recipes or create new recipes, and that is not something we allow here at all.

But maybe I’m just old fashioned. So I seek community feedback before updating the rules. Please leave a reply below if you have strong opinions either way.

Question How to separate frozen meat

My relative said she puts water over the sausages to take some out to eat then puts the rest back to freeze. My other relative told me to put water over the frozen ground beef, take some out to cook then put the rest in a ziploc bag back in the freezer. Is this okay to do ? I dont want to get sick

edit: thank you for the feed back. much appreciated. It's quite hard to figure things out in the kitchen for the first time as a young adult in a family like this😅

Question Can you just make a bacon stew?

• Upvotes

I make some very basic rice and black beans (mama's recipe) and it uses one (1) strip of bacon in the beans for flavor. The problem is, bacon comes in packs of like 10 or more. The most recent pack I got was just 4 bucks, cheap, but I feel bad wasting all those other bacon strips

I'm also not really a fan of fried bacon you'd see in breakfasts, so I was just brainstorming ideas. My first thought was of course throwing them all into a pot with some spices and see what happens.

Would this experiment be a good course of action?

Question 33F living at home and struggling with food habits and budgeting/meal prep/cooking

I’m a 33-year-old woman living at home with my parents in Toronto, and I’ve never been good at managing food. I rely heavily on takeout, prepared meals, and snacks instead of cooking.

I also struggle with feeling full and have had ongoing issues with food and my weight.

My parents have mostly stopped cooking and given up on life lol, and our kitchen is old and uncomfortable to work in. Because of that, I’ve developed a lot of anxiety around cooking at home, which makes it hard to get started. I do enjoy cooking when I get into it, but I worry about wasting food, being too picky, and giving up if a recipe or routine doesn’t work or if I don’t have the right utensils to make something and spend alot of extra money to make it. I usually eat the same 10–15 meals each week, whether they’re takeout or home-cooked because it’s easier.

I think I might enjoy meal prep, but I don’t know how to begin. Planning meals, shopping, cooking in batches, and storing everything feels overwhelming. I also don’t enjoy leftovers, so I’m not sure what kind of meal prep would work for me.

I’ve considered hiring someone to cook for me, but I don’t know whether that’s realistic or necessary. I’d like to learn a simple, flexible system that helps me eat a bit better and spend less on takeout without requiring complicated recipes or a nice kitchen.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks 😊

Question how do you tell when a stainless pan is actually hot enough? everything sticks

he got me a stainless steel pan for my birthday and i really want to like it but eggs and chicken basically weld themselves to it every time. I've tried more oil, less oil, waiting longer before flipping, nothing seems consistent.

is there a reliable way to know it's ready or am I just moving stuff too early? would hate to give up and go back to the old scratched nonstick lol

Question Getting married! Need recommendations on the first meal I cook as husband-and-wife

I'm getting married next week and I'm looking for recommendations on what to make for our first meal as husband and wife. She's vegetarian and I'm not but I've never let that stop me before. Neither of us have any real dietary restrictions but we prefer not to go too heavy on dairy. Other than that, we're open to ideas. Thank you in advance!

Question Can I mix my mozzarella cheese sticks in the same flour that my chicken was mixed in before frying them?

Quick question can I mix my mozzarella cheese sticks in the same flour that I mixed my chicken in? Or is that not safe? I know I'm gonna fry them after my chicken but it'll be a quick fry since they're mozzarella sticks so I dunno if the quick fry will fry it good enough to where it's safe to eat after mixing in the same flour as my chicken.

Request Easy recipes to freeze

Hi all, I’m visiting my boyfriend and I want to surprise him by making a few meals and freezing them for him so he can heat them up later. What are some recipes that are easy to make and taste great after you heat them up again? I was thinking of chili con carne (no beans, he dislikes them). What else could I do? I am thinking of making 3 recipes or so and freezing 5-10 meals of them in the freezer. Thank you so much!! 😊

Question Stainless steel pan help

Hi all from the UK.

Beginner with stainless steel here. I’ve just cooked a beef burger from frozen, but this tends to happen whatever I cook.

https://imgur.com/a/TeM2JUi

My process is pan on med-high > water test > turn down for 1-2 mins to cool to desired temp > burger in.

I always tend to get the black / grease marks on the sides of the pan from splashes.

Any advice I would be very grateful!

Question I've never cooked because I'm constantly terrified of starting a fire, poisoning myself, or contamination. Has anyone gotten past this?

This is very embarrassing but I never cooked or helped cook growing up and when I moved out on my own I was too scared to try. I knew I'd fuck it up, I knew I'd give myself food poisoning, I knew I'd cause a fire, I knew I'd get mice. I'm terrified of it and avoided it to the point I never even think of it as an option. All I do is buy pre-made, or TV dinners, or take out. It's getting insanely expensive and I'm starting to gain weight and I need to cook for myself but I feel so pathetic something as simple as cooking is unfathomable to me.

Has anyone gotten past this? I genuinely can't stop thinking about mice getting into food left in a pantry or accidentally eating undercooked food, I'm not sure how I can even start.

Question Homemade noodle broth ideas?

First time posting so I hope this is the right place to ask!

I'm starting my internship soon and I'll have to bring lunch in; I planned to do noodles and some boiled egg etc, but I realized the packs of rice noodles I got didn't come with the spice packet that usually comes with instant ramen/noodles

So I was wondering if anyone had ideas on how I could make my own? :0c

(Also lunch ideas in general are appreciated :^D my last job had lunch at the cafeteria included and before that school obviously had it's own lunch so I've not really prepped lunches for work before)

Thanks in advance!

Question How to keep omelets from browning?

Hello! So I’m very new to cooking. I want to learn to cook for myself and for others. I bought a cookbook to learn the basics and I’m starting with breakfast foods. Mainly eggs at the moment.

So I’m following a recipe and it’s telling me to put a tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Wait till the butter stops foaming and pour the eggs in. Move the eggs around to get runny parts to spread on the skillet and let it sit until the top is just a little runny and then fold.

But by the time it gets to that point, the bottom has already browned. Even though the recipe says to use medium-high heat should I just lower it?

Recipe Guys not being dramatic, but my oatmeal has never been better

I know everyone has their own way of making porridge BUT here in the UK there's no doubt that Pret does the best coffee shop chain pre-made stuff – turns out I only needed to cook my oats at home for five mins in water first to get the same effect?!

Question Oil fighting back when trying to cook in pan?

Everytime i try cooking something greasy/ oily in a pan at one point the oil starts popping and hitting my skin whenever I get close to the food to flip it or something.

I tried turning down the heat but idk if its helping. For this burger I had it at 4 which i thought would be low enoygh to cook the food but prevent the popping, and didnt put any oil this is just the fat from the burger.

How can I prevent this?

Question Has anyone else discoved the power of Curry powder?

Ok I have an unhealthy addiction to curry powder. It adds depth to the most random things. My go-to seasoning for anything is chili powder, rosemary, italian seasoning, msg, salt, pepper, and curry. Literally it works on the most random things like mashed potatoes, tomato pasta sauce, tacos, and like everything else. I put it in mashed potatoes and it is addicting lol

Question I deboned chicken drumsticks into skin on drumstick fillets. Would using the broiler in an oven be a good and easy way to cook them?

What temperature should I set the broiler to and for how long would a good cook time be? Should I keep the drumstick fillets in the middle of the oven or towards the top?

Question Toppings for a sweet and spicy chicken burrito?

I found a recipe online for sweet and spicy chicken that I have been obsessed with for a while, serving over rice. Last night, I got the idea to turn it into a burrito by just putting it onto a tortilla. It was pretty good, but I feel like it could be improved. Recipe(s) as follows:

Chicken:
Light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, oyster sauce. sambal oelek, brown sugar, honey. Marinate 15 mins.
(Recipe was originally roughly a tablespoon of each for 1 breast but I just eyeball it)

Throw a diced chili in the pan about 5 mins before the chicken.

Cook until sauce reduces

Rice:
100 grams jasmine rice (this is how much I was using when I was just eating chicken and rice, I think 50g is sufficient for the burrito).

I feel like either beans or cabbage would help with this. Thoughts?

Question How long is a chuck roast good in the refrigerator?

I bought it October 12th and the time kind of got away from me (I know), and now it's 8 days later. I haven't opened it yet and the sell by date was October 16th, but it looks okay other than some darkening around the edge. I've read various sources online stating both 3-5 days after the sell by date, and 3-5 days after purchase. So, which is it?

Question Cooking tips for someone who really doesn't like cooking

So i kind of hate cooking, it makes me so anxious, and i just want to know the easiest type of meals i can make that require the least amount of knowledge needed and time spent in the kitchen. I'm fine with prepping like handling raw meats and cutting vegetables though (not very good at super consistent cuts but they'll work), it's just getting stuff in the pan and the act of actually cooking that freaks me out. We have an air fryer and a proper stove, but can buy stuff like a rice cooker or pressure cooker or whatever. I'm fine with most types of foods and willing to try new things, some spicy heat is ok as long as the flavour it adds is good, but super crispy crunchy food is a no go because of my teeth and specifically bell peppers i hate. And for reference if needed, I'm in Canada.

I've spent so much money on take out and delivery and it's kind of driving me crazy. i need some help learning what i can make quickly and easily to just eat and carry on with my day after. Thank you.
