We’re developing a 4-player online co-op game and trying to decide whether it needs a save-and-resume system, and where saving should happen.
Each wave is expected to last around 20 minutes. Kills are shared across the team, and at milestones like 10, 20, 40, 80, and 160 kills, every player gets to choose a skill upgrade. We want players to grow together without competing for last hits.
With that structure, what would you expect as a player?
• Would saving between waves be enough, or would you also want to stop partway through a wave and resume later?
• If a friend disconnects, should they be able to rejoin with their exact upgrades and progress restored?
• Should a saved run belong to the host, requiring that person to be there to continue?
• Would you be comfortable losing progress from the current wave, as long as you could restart from the beginning of that wave?
We’re treating recovery from a disconnect and deliberately ending a session to continue another day as separate questions.
Does a 20-minute wave feel like a reasonable stretch to finish before saving, or would that make it difficult to play with your friends? Are there co-op games whose save systems you’d like us to learn from?
