Discussion Just wanted to vent about today's class

I usually take 2.0 classes and have never had an issue with an instructor, but today's class left me wishing that the app had a way to provide a rating for instructors.

  1. The music was WAY too loud. The instructor wasn't using a mic, and we could barely hear her. Everyone was watching the people in front to figure out what to do. Nobody reliably knew which springs to use and we couldn't hear half the instructions. We asked her to turn the music down, and she turned it down like 10%.

  2. She kept inventing moves. I love creative instructors, but some of these were unreasonable or impossible. Like doing bridges on an extended carriage and then transitioning into a teaser... while keeping the carriage extended. With what do you want me to keep the carriage out, my ass? Or standing on a box with one foot on a ball to do squats. Ma'am, we could just do these on the floor.

  3. Her instruction was so vague. We had to keep looking at each other for guidance. To be fair, this is my only real pilates pet peeve. Repeating "shoulder across" six times doesn't magically make it a meaningful instruction. At one point I looked around, and literally everyone was doing something different.

The cherry on top was watching her tell regulars who were clearly struggling to understand her instructions to "keep practicing and you'll get strong enough to do this."

I've taken over 200 classes, and I've never left one feeling like I'd gotten so little out of it. Easy enough to just book with others though. Thank you for listening. šŸ™

Vent Watching a sports game during class

Someone had their phone with them and placed it on different spots on the reformer throughout class so they could keep track of a game. They also talked about the game during class with another member so it wasn’t discrete. Have you ever seen this? How does one have a mind-body connection to what is going on in class if they’re distracted. I also thought it was disrespectful to the instructor. The instructor was aware and it seemed like they were definitely taken aback but it was a long-time member and they just kind of brushed it off.

Advice/Questions Was I in the wrong? Odd experience with requesting migraine accommodation today.

• Upvotes

So the instructor was running late to a 1pm Saturday class. I get it we’ve all been late at some point in life but she starts class the second she walks in and then doesn’t tell us to inform her of injuries or anything until after footwork has started. I was fighting off a migraine and had taken my rescue meds but the bright sun from the window was really bothering me as soon as we started and I could tell it was gonna give me a headache if I continued that way. But she is the type to talk continuously throughout class so as she said please let me know of any injuries or modifications needed I gently whispered her name as she walks past and she gives me a look and keeps walking past bc she’s instructing on the next movement…then again she walks past and we all are doing our stuff but she’s just cueing on breathing so I was trying to gently wave her over to request her to put the blinds down but she’s won’t stop talking! Like at this point I feel rude even tho we are less than 2 mins into class and she gave no opportunity to ask for accommodation. But I had no choice but to stage whisper ā€œcan we please put the blinds downā€ as she walked past again still instructing and she gestured to the blinds and thumbs upped me. She put them down and it was way better for me the rest of class but I felt bad about being rude after the fact. Was I in the wrong or was my social anxiety getting the best of me here?

Vent What brands do your club pilates carry? Need legging help!

My club pilates only really carries a brand called Tavi, which i have never heard of. Has anyone tried this brand? How do the leggings fit and what are your go to leggings or bottoms for pilates? And where should I get them from!?

Victory! So proud of myself and our whole class this morning!

For the first time, we were taught and executed "back splits", completely balancing ourselves during this movement. We didn't even know what it was until today. That balance component was extremely scary at first but I think we all quickly gained confidence and pulled it off successfully! Yay us!! šŸ˜šŸŽ‰šŸ”„

Here's a video to demonstrate what we did: (see if this link works šŸ¤ž)

Advice/Questions Sweaty palms

I’m currently 151 classes and have been approved for level 2. One of my struggles is I get sweaty palms during planking, to the point that by the third round planking on the box sometimes my hands either turn out or turn in. I’m thinking about getting some yoga/pilates gloves. Anyone have any recommendations?

Advice/Questions I’ve taken about 55 classes, usually do Flow 1.5s, sometimes 1s with a harder instructor but lately I feel like my arms are looking bulky. Could this be happening?

I thought Pilates gives more of a long and lean look but tbh my arms looked leaner and better before these classes. I’m so confused.

My forearms are looking kind of…big, especially. I liked them better before. :(
Yes I’m stronger now but IMO I don’t look as good. Idk if I’m one of those types who bulks easily or what but I liked how I looked with a skinnier arm.

Should I stick to less challenging classes, like just go to 1’s? Is there anything I can do to get my leaner looking arms back? I hate that I’m paying so much money and spending so much time to feel worse about how I look. And yes I know strength is important, especially as we age for our bone health and everything, but I didn’t realize this would happen in Pilates. It’s not like I’m at the gym lifting heavy weights. :(

Occasionally I see classes that have a plus sign (+) next to the title. What does this mean?

Advice/Questions Headache when coming off reformer

Kinda like the title says. Does anyone know what could cause a momentary pounding in my head when I stand up after being on the reformer awhile? It lasts maybe a minute and I feel like I notice it more after doing supine arms. Funnily enough it didn’t really happen when I first started Pilates. I’m just afraid I am going to give myself an aneurysm, and am planning on mentioning it to my doctor as well. Any insight is welcome. Thank you!

Advice/Questions thinking of canceling my $300/month passport membership. what should i try instead?

I’m paying $300/month for a passport membership (no destination access). My home studio is in Fresno, where I used to reallyyy enjoy the classes. They were challenging and effective, but since moving back home I haven’t had the same experience in LA

I think maybe I’ve outgrown club pilates. I’m just not loving it anymore and I’ve barely been going lately so it’s getting hard to justify spending $300 a month

I’m trying to get into better shape, build strength/muscle and get more toned and defined. I’ve been considering lagree, strength training, spin, or even class pass? I’d like to mix in pilates here and there but I don’t think it can be my only form of exercise anymore. I’m 30 now and feel like my body needs more to stay in shape. I like the idea of studio classes but I’m open to weight training too

I feel like at 300 a month, I should be able to find a membership or combination of classes that gives me more of what I'm looking for, idk if that’s unrealistic?

For anyone who has moved on from club pilates, what did you switch to? And for those in LA, are there any studios, classes, or memberships you’d recommend that are worth the money?

thank youuuuušŸ«¶šŸ»

edit to clarify: by LA, I mean los angeles!

Victory! Studio upgraded our membership

My studio franchise has 2 studios. Unless you are an unlimited member you can only attend classes at the studio you signed up at…. Until now. They’ve just opened up both studios to 8 pack and 4 pack members too. While I think this should have been standard, I’m happy it’s happened. Gives me more flexibility for classes. šŸ‘ Does your studio do this too?

Vent After a year of Club Pilates, I Quit

I joined Club Pilates a year ago as a way to meet new people in my city and as a way to keep fit.

For the first 9 months, I was extremely happy. I really enjoyed all my classes and mainly took Cardio Sculpts. I became very friendly with my instructors and genuinely looked forward to meeting with all my acquaintances/fellow regulars at every class. I was there probably 5 days a week.

However, at some point this summer, I noticed a change in my studio. My favorite instructors were suddenly canceling classes last minute. They fired some of my favorite instructors and brought in new people without any notice. In nearly every instance, the new instructors they brought on were inferior to the ones they got rid of. I made sure to give these new instructors a fair shot (take at least 3-5 classes with them) but I still didn’t like them.

I sensed that there may be some tension between management/instructors. At some point in September, only one instructor was left that I wanted to take classes with regularly and who actually provided a challenging workout. I went on vacation and went I came back, I found out that he quit.

So I decided to quit Club Pilates too. At this point, I’m not enjoying it and people are dropping like flies at my studio. I wish they could do something to bring back my old favorite instructors.

Has this ever happened at your studio? Or is mine just grossly mismanaged?

Advice/Questions First CP class as 1.5

I have some experience with reformer classes (4 months in, 2-3 classes weekly) and had about 10 private lessons but never taken any cp classes.

My local cp studio is usually fully booked on classpass but I found one availabilty this week but it’s 1.5.
Since I have no experience with cp, I have no clues what the levels indicate. If I am aware of the cues, spine alignment and some basic terms of pilates, should I go for it?

Oh btw I can’t do teaser!!

Advice/Questions Teaching Full Time

Does anyone here teach full time at CP? I have been throwing the idea around of transitioning to full time but I am not sure if it is sustainable. My studio offers full benefits and it is 20 classes per week to be at full time status, it doesn't seem bad, I am just not sure if it is sustainable long term. Just looking to see if anyone else out there has done this or if you are how you are enjoying it.

Instructors Teacher Training Anatomy Module

I was signed up for teacher training and due to some unforeseen life events I had to take a 6 month pause. My anatomy module is about to expire in 3 days and I cannot figure out how to extend or re-enroll in the module and cannot get in touch with my master trainer. Does anyone have experience with this?

Vent Are all studios like this? Not sure if I like it

These are some things I don't really love about my studio in Portland and I'm wondering if all studios/ type of pilates are like this or if this is unique to my studio? Maybe I just don't like pilates as much as I thought I would.

  1. Music is quiet and reformers are squeaky which feels awkward

  2. Most teachers are not very community-oriented (don't use people's names during class)

  3. Feels slow-paced between moves and doesn't get my heart rate up (but the strength-training moves are challenging). I don't really break a sweat

  4. My studio doesn't have a lot of 2.0 or more challenging "control" or "cardio sculpt" class time options on evenings or weekends so it's a bit hard for me to book anything anything other than 1.5s

For context I'm a beginner who has been going for about 3 months now and has never taken a 2.0 or higher class. I only go to one class a week, usually just a Reformer Flow 1.5 most times

27 sounds like all pilates
31 non- Club Pilates places are usually different but all Club Pilates studios are like this
65 sounds unique to your studio

Instructors Instructor Pay

Wondering how normal the pay structure is with CP. I am fully certified through CPs TT training program - I get paid a base amount of $25 for under 6 people, and then an additional $3 per person up to a full class of 12, so the max is $43. For the most part, my classes are on the fuller side. But I’ve noticed members at our location have been cancelling memberships left and right, so fuller classes are getting harder to come by. I’m just trying to gadge if this is ā€œnormalā€ industry pay? I’m located in the Midwest.

Advice/Questions App down?

Hi, my classes have all disappeared from my schedule, and I cannot book anything. My profile still shows that I have an annual unlimited membership, so I’m assuming/hoping that it’s just something glitchy with the app. Is anyone else having that issue?

I tried calling the studio, but they’re closed for the day as it’s Saturday late afternoon. I did leave a voicemail, but I’m sure I won’t hear from anyone until tomorrow.

Memberships/Policies Club Pilates Bozeman?

is anyone one a member at Club Pilates Bozeman? How do you like the club, instructors and classes? Is the waitlist usually full and hard to get off of? How does it compare to other reformer Pilates studios in town? Also, does anyone know of reformer Pilates teacher training opportunities in the area?

Advice/Questions Neck stiffness

Hi!

I started club pilates. Anyway- when I was in shape, I had done tons of floor work.

Anyway, now I have been recovering from some pelvic floor disfunction- and I'm hypermobile

I decided I'd like to try reformer pilates and the easiest method was club pilates.

I feel worse. My posture is worse, my neck and shoulder is out of whack. I am not sore- but I just feel bleh.

Do I just need more recovery time?

What do you all think?

Advice/Questions How different is an actual class compared to the intro class?

I just went to an intro class on Tuesday and I really enjoyed it! That was also my first time doing pilates and using a reformer and it didnt seem too hard but once again that was just an intro class so I know they weren't going to make things crazy hard or else I would want to come back lmao. I plan on doing a drop-in class soon but as someone who's never had any pilates experience before now, how different is the full class compared to the intro? Also how much harder is a regular class? I'll do a level 1 class since they're beginner friendly so I dont imagine it will be crazy hard but since Im still new to this i cant say that for a fact lol. Thanks in advance!

Vent Does Maroon 5 have stock in this company

If I hear Moves like Jagger one more time, I might actually quit. It's almost every class. I'm 4-5 (different types of) classes a week and I'm lucky if I have ONE class that doesn't play it.

Conversely, are there Spotify playlists that are slated for CP that instructors just play over and over?

Advice/Questions Pregnant

Hello
I have been doing Pilates at club Pilates for the past 1 year mostly flow 1 and once a week. I actually travel for work to a different state and when I stay there(1-2 days a week) I go for a Pilates class.
I am now leaving the job and moving to home state permanently and I am 5 months pregnant. I am hoping to continue Pilates however will need to get membership in my home state studio.
Two questions
1. If I start a new membership and need to cancel after few weeks or months due to anything related to the pregnancy is the cancellation fees waived off esp if I can get a letter from physician
My plan is to continue till 36 weeks, I am 20 weeks now
2. Anybody else continue Pilates right untill 36 weeks?
