Discussion I participated in Step Beyond Celiac and ran 43 miles to support celiac disease research!

Despite having some health setbacks including a hospitalization, I'm so proud of myself. 🄺

It took 5 years of figuring things out, but I have well-managed celiac disease. So much of my time and control had been taken from me when I was in the trenches of healing from the damage of celiac, that I decided this year I really wanted to challenge myself. I guess I wanted to prove that I'm stronger than I think I am.

I started running in March and when I was able to complete 5Ks, I really wanted to run for charity. Naturally, I chose one that supported celiac disease.

I really hope we will continue to see advances for a treatment and a cure. The promising studies we've seen lately gives me a lot of, well, hope for the future.

Edit for clarity: I ran 43 miles across a 2 month period (the event was for the fall), averaging 3.13 miles per run. I am not an ultramarathoner.

Product GF tax needs to be studied, what do you mean I pay 2 extra dollars for half the amount of bread. They should have some sort of discount for celiacs!

Sometimes I feel like I’m overly cautious, but the thought of getting sick stresses me out.

do you think there’s actually a risk of cross contact?

Question Is it really this terrible or am I just really bad at this whole Celiac thing?

I (29M) recently found out I'm Celiac and am about 6 months into no gluten, no cross-contamination, nothing. I think I started out OK, but I'm realizing now, after allowing my stomach to heal for some time, I'm way more sensitive to gluten than I originally thought. In the past three months, I feel like I haven't gone a single week without being glutened. And when I do get glutened, my mental health takes such a nosedive and I become super depressed and irritable. Just trying to survive and navigate a gluten free lifestyle in a world completely filled with gluten is so mentally taxing and burdensome. I really didn't think going gluten free would be so challenging, but this is having such a toll on my mental health, my marriage, my family, literally my whole life. Is being Celiac truly that debilitating and disabling? Or do I just really suck at being Celiac? Can't really afford therapy/counseling right now, but are there any free resources y'all have used to to help you through this transition?

Question Your Worst Celiac Symptom?

Hi all! I’m a 25 yo woman who just got diagnosed with celiac via biopsy and blood test about three weeks ago. It was a long journey that started in April after years of on and off stomach issues, but the worst symptom and the thing that pushed me to getting diagnosed is this ANNOYING. SHOOTING. PAIN.

i would say there is a 4 inch band between my bust and stomach that just shoots with pain, randomly, multiple times a day. It feels like a cramp or pinch, and typically lasts a few seconds, but it has consistently been the worst symptom I’ve had. On a GF diet now with a cleaned and full GF kitchen and am trying to be patient but wow it’s really annoying.

It kinda made me wonder what other people think their ā€œworstā€ symptom? or did you have a symptom that was ā€œweirdā€? I presented with atypical celiac so it’s had me wondering. Curious to hear, thanks!

also, anyone else get that sporadic shooting pain? Because it’s truly a pain in my behind!

The other night we made pizza for dinner, my very last Costco gf pizza got cooked, I ate all but 1 /4 of it, which my husband proceeded to put in a zip lock baggie with the left overs from 3! Non gf pizzas along with the rest of the gf stuff on that plate, the next day when I saw it in the fridge and asked if he put them all in the same baggie he accused me of handing him a plate with ā€œeverythingā€ on it. He’s Usually very conscious of my disease so I’m hoping this was a one off caused by his apparently deteriorating mental health, it’s just frustrating to be deprived of my only last slice of pizza when the nearest Costco is 2 1/2 hours away and no where nearby has affordable regular food, let alone gf food. I was also out of town for a couple weeks so All the left overs in the fridge are glutenated too. But to get yelled at about it just adds insult to injury, as if I was the one who forgot to keep it separate

Question My mom is travelling to USA soon, are there any gluten free dry goods I should ask her to buy?

We’re Swedish, and there are plenty of good gluten free products here. But it would be so fun to try the gluten free things you guys have overseas!

I’m already excited to try gluten free Oreo’s since we don’t have those here. But are there anything other gluten free dry goods that you guys recommend I should try? She will travel to Boston

I have no other dietary restrictions, no wheat allergy.

Rant Accidentally glutened myself at Chick-fil-A.

I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with a gluten free bun and some waffle fries. After taking a small bite of my sandwich i noticed the supposed gluten free bun felt a lot like real bread and tasted so. I immediately realized they gave me the sandwich with the default bun and i then checked the receipt to confirm it. After that i did not finish the sandwich and gave it to my family member. Apparently the gluten free bun is supposed to come in a separate package and i was meant to then assemble the gluten free grilled chicken sandwich but i was given the sandwich pre assembled. I know i was stupid for not immediately figuring out the sandwich had a wheat containing bun. Now im probably going to be sick for a while.

Question Any musicians with hand and wrist pain suddenly cured since cutting out gluten?

I'm a professional musician and for the last year I thought I was going to have to give up music. I couldn't practise, I had to save my hands for teaching and cancelled all performances. My finger joints ached, my wrist ached, base of thumbs hurt all the time. I was wearing wrist braces all day etc...

I stopped gluten about a month ago since diagnosis and the pain has almost entirely stopped. Anyone else go through this??

Question Stuck in a rough situation at work. Why is it always flour?

I work in grocery store in the online shopping department. I don't touch flour at all when shopping and have been allowed to avoid the flour aisle entirely. However, when I work grocery pickup, I occasionally have to go outside, take a bag of flour in a plastic bag out of a tub that is otherwise closed, and put it in the back of someone's car.

Today I was working pickup and I opened up a tub to a big poof of flour, which has literally never happened before. I was breathing out luckily but after I stepped away I guess there was some on my lip because I closed my mouth and tasted it a tiny bit. I rinsed out my mouth a bunch of times and washed my face in the bathroom. Idk if I got glutened or not.

I just basically got promoted to manager. Like an hour before this happened. With manager responsibilities I've basically been told that there will probably be a few times I will need to go grab flour, but I'm going to use like 3 masks and just bag and tie it immediately. I also tend to not just hold my breath but breathe out slowly if I do go into the flour aisle for whatever reason.

I also want to ask upper management if they can ask other shoppers to just tie the plastic bags with flour. The shopper that I think did this is pretty new but idk if asking for this might make them walk back my promotion for worries about me being a liability. See, legally I think I couldnt do a thing, because I'm not sure my diagnosis is formal enough if that makes sense? The doctor was able to diagnose me through my mom's diagnosis but then my mom got retested and it turns out she doesn't have celiac? She was diagnosed in the late 50s or early 60s so they didn't test for it the same. My numbers were still high just from cross contamination, but not technically high enough.

I'm autistic and this is something that my employer is not aware of, but I'm questioning whether or not what I'm asking for is reasonable and is likely to get them to suddenly decide not to promote me. The promotion is basically going to be "this is the week we're going to do training". If I just got glutened I might be demoted either way. Idk. The employer is aware of celiac and I have documented accomidations.

Discussion A small win for this newly diagnosed person!

I was diagnosed with celiac this February out of the blue. By that I mean I don’t show any of the typical symptoms, I’m not sure if asymptomatic is the correct term or if there’s a more technical term we prefer here, but no GI upset/joint pain/fatigue/any of the traditional issues my other celiac friends exhibit. But I got the blood test and endoscopy and it was confirmed. I did my absolute best to follow a strict gluten free diet, I make almost all my own food, am typically in control of what I eat, and I ate at some restaurants that are completely gluten free but also at some where it was only verbally confirmed that what I was receiving was totally gluten free. I just got my first blood test back and my ttg reading was extremely low, and was congratulated by my doctor. I was quite worried that I was still glutening myself somewhere, so that was awesome.
My question to those of you who know more - is that just showing a small snapshot in time, as in reflecting just what I’ve eaten in the last few days, or is it showing me the results from a longer period of time? My ttg was 3.5 u/ml.

Rant I feel so alone honestly

Hey I’m 18 I was just diagnosed and it’s crazy to me like I have to alter my entire life and everyone is acting like I’m crazy for being upset and they say it’ll be fine and theirs so many options out there but nothing is the same anymore. I used to just walk the aisles and pick whatever food I wanted now I have to scan my app or read the labels and I can’t just go to McDonald’s cause I’m hungry or have a family dinner. I feel so isolated like nobody will ever understand, I’ve never even met someone who knows what celiacs is and I just wish I could feel normal again.

Rant Gluten free bread is so frustrating

As the title says.
I wish gluten free bread had the same quality as regular bread.
Sure the taste and texture has improved somewhat over the years.
I found a bread I really like (BFree brand—the size, taste, and texture of the bread is just like the regular bread. But the loaf length is SO tiny). With regular bread, you’re able to make 10 decent sized sandwiches with one loaf. With gluten free bread you’re only able to make 3 maybe 4 sandwiches per loaf. It doesn’t last long either. I find that gluten free bread molds faster than normal bread. And the cost of the bread! Why is it quadruple the price for a tiny loaf of bread?!
A regular loaf of bread is $2 or $3. And a loaf of gluten free bread is close to $7 or $8.
In this economy it’s hard to afford anything, gluten free doesn’t help at all. Especially with celiac, when you don’t have a choice but buy gluten free.
I’ve had celiac for 15 years and i still get frustrated with gluten free bread lol

I have an appointment with a dermatologist on Monday and I want to know if that is a usual symptom. Only my left arm itches. I mean, it’s more than an itch, it’s like someone clawing their way up through my skin. Then I itch and bruises appear. The bruises last for days. I’m not even 100% sure it’s from gluten as I am very careful.

Question GF Certified v. GF

Hi! I’m in the process of being diagnosed Celiac or severely gluten intolerant (also a Type 1 Diabetic, woo!). Important to note that I am in fact outward facing asymptomatic when I consume gluten (no bloating, no stomach issues, etc.).

I just had my endoscopy on Monday, but am starting the transition to gluten free since I’m grocery shopping.

I’m finding that a lot (not all) of the food I regularly eat are already labeled as GF, but not certified - for example, Bear Naked Cacao & Cashew Butter Crunch (I knowwww there’s big discussion around oats, but unsure how they can label GF if they’re not..?), Pure Protein bars, yogurts, all my single ingredient foods and some mixes, etc.

Do people who are celiac trust just a ā€œgluten freeā€ label that is not certified, or do I truly need to question everything? I feel like if I can’t trust the GF designation I will truly make myself crazy. It’s hard for me to fully understand since I’m asymptomatic. Is it safe to trust the GF labels if they’re not certified? Have people been glutened by foods labeled Gluten Free in a grocery store?

Discussion Email from ice cream manufacturer

Yes or no..... the local shop changes utensils and gloves but this is from the people they get their product from

"We are very careful with allergens; breaking down, washing, rinsing, and sanitizing the machines after we run any flavor with an allergen. And while we can't guarantee that there is no cross contamination since we don't have dedicated machinery, we work extremely hard to provide quality products.

For gluten allergies specifically, I can say that our base mix is gluten free, thus making all of our products gluten free unless there is an inclusion in the product that contains gluten. For instance, Birthday Cake is gluten free, because there are no cake pieces in it, but Ultimate Oreo is not gluten free because it contains Oreos.Ā

If you are interested in seeing a current list of all of our gluten-free flavors, click on the "Flavors" tab located at the top of our website, chocolateshoppeicecream.com, and select ā€œGluten-Freeā€ located under ā€œSuper-Premium Ice Creamā€!

I am unable to speak for individual shops procedures, as all of our shops are independently owned and operated, so I would recommend asking your local shop about their procedures regarding cross-contamination.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Question Diagnosed with Celiac Disease, but my symptoms don't seem to match. Anyone else?

I'm currently 23 years old and was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in January 2026 after having an upper and lower endoscopy, along with blood work.

I've had stomach issues since I was a kid. I'd often find myself suddenly needing to use the washroom ASAP, getting random abdominal pains that would last around 15 minutes before disappearing, and just dealing with general stomach discomfort. The symptoms would come and go, and I could never figure out what was causing them.

So when I was diagnosed with Celiac, it made sense. However, I'll admit I haven't been the best at following a strict gluten-free diet. It's a pretty big adjustment when practically everything you love eating involves bread.

One of my biggest struggles is that I can eat gluten and sometimes feel absolutely fine, or only experience some minor discomfort. I've also noticed that things like spicy food and hard liquor, which I used to tolerate just fine, now really upset my stomach.

Another thing that confuses me is the genetic aspect of Celiac. As far as I know, nobody in my family has it. My dad has actually struggled with serious stomach issues for years and ends up in the hospital every couple of weeks. Despite countless tests, they've never been able to pinpoint what's wrong, and he's never been diagnosed with Celiac.

Recently, I managed to follow a fairly strict gluten-free diet for about a month but didn't notice much of a difference in how I felt. Then, one day, I ate two slices of regular pizza and experienced absolutely no discomfort.

This has me wondering whether I could have been misdiagnosed, or if my symptoms are just different from what most people with Celiac experience.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Is it normal to have Celiac but barely react to gluten sometimes? I'd appreciate hearing about other people's experiences or any recommendations!

For now, I'm still trying to avoid gluten, but I'll admit I occasionally make exceptions.

Question Any purity protocol oats?

Hihi! I'm super sensitive to CC, but not sensitive to avenin. Explanation: I can have oat products that either follow a very strict protocol or the purity protocol, without issues.

I'm having a little difficulty with trying safe brands that use such protocols. I emailed OverNight Oats and got a loop-around response. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Discussion Dental Issues

I've been diagnosed since I was 4. I also have scleroderma and, recently, hypothyroidism, anemia, and a B12 deficiency. As far as I can remember, I always had weak teeth and weak enamel. i had braces when I was younger, and that didn't do too much for me. I get multiple cavities a year (at least 6), have had one tooth removed already, and have had one root canal. I don't want my teeth to get worse and have dentures in my 30s. I had a filling fall out a few days ago, and suddenly, 3 more teeth began hurting on the top- maybe a new cavity, maybe more fillings fell out, but it's tender. I take care of my teeth; I brush them daily, but nothing seems to stop the decay. How do I stop this?

Question Anyone else who has 0 tolerance to <1ppm to Gluten?

Hola everyone!

I got the celiac diagnosis 2008, probably been living with it undiagnosed for a couple years (at least 4).

I had severe problems that lead to this diagnosis (anaemia, fatigue, pneumonia, weak Immunsystem in general, etc etc). After going strictly gf for a while, most of this symptoms significantly improved. I never went back to 100% - but I'd say at least to 70-75%, which was like a gift to me.

Back then, I wasn't that sensitive to Gluten, for instance I could just wash the dishes and cutlery at someone else's (gluten contaminated) place or could eat things with <20ppm gluten and would be fine.

Over the years, that changed significantly.

Nowadays I can't cook at someone's places safely (new sponge, precleaning, cleaning stuff etc), I can't consume some (many) products that state <20ppm. I can't eat gf certified oats and many more things.

It's not like get the same reaction as if I'd accidentally ingest a noodle or sth like that, but i get a very specific gut pain zu the left of the belly button and my gut just stays inflamed for a whole (bloating, mushy stools etc.). Last duodenoscopy showed lymphozytes being active in the mucosa (sign of inflammatory action), while the microvilli showed no degradation (2008 I had Marsh 3b).

My whole household is strictly gf, guests aren't allowed to bring any gluten.

My tolerance even to minimal cross contamination ( probably<5ppm) in production is basically 0.

I thrive on keto diets, but since I don't like meat, or at least can't only eat meat only over longer periods without disgust (not to speak of animal abuse), that's not really an option either.

Anyone has similar experiences or advice?

Thanks in advance
