Discussion 💬 HELPPP a clueless student make a working smart irrigation system from scratch.
image for reference
so for my school science exhibition, i've been assigned to make a smart irrigation system using rainwater harvesting and solar energy, something like the model in the attached picture. the idea is to collect rainwater from rooftops, store it in a tank, and use a soil moisture sensor to automatically turn the water pump on when the soil is dry and turn it off when it's wet enough.
the thing is, ik absolutely nothing about electronics rn. i understand the basic concept and what the model is supposed to do, but i have no idea how to connect everything and make it work. i can't just make a model that looks good but doesn't actually function, so i'm trying to figure out how to build the entire thing.
these are the components i've been told to use:
- soil moisture sensor x1
- automatic pump controller compatible with the sensor x1
- mini dc water pump x1
- solar panel x1
- compatible rechargeable battery x1
- solar charge controller, if required x1
- connecting wires
- switch x1
- suitable fuse and holder x1
i have a few questions and would really appreciate some guidance.
how do i connect all these components? i need the complete circuit diagram, including the solar panel, battery, sensor, controller and pump, with labelled connections so i can understand what goes where.
what specifications should i look for in these components? like what voltage should the solar panel, battery and pump be, and how do i make sure everything is compatible?
how does the automatic mechanism actually work? ik the sensor detects moisture, but how does that signal reach the controller and make the pump turn on or off? do i need an additional relay, or can the automatic pump controller handle that itself?
how do i connect the solar panel, battery and charge controller? is the battery necessary, and how do i make sure the pump gets enough power?
how do i connect the rainwater collection system, storage tank, pump and drip irrigation pipes so the water actually reaches the plants?
are there any other components or materials i'll need apart from the ones listed above?
since i'm a complete beginner, what should i build and test first? i don't want to connect everything at once and have no clue what went wrong if it doesn't work.
i'm in class 11, and this is for my school science exhibition, so i need something affordable and practical that i can actually build and demonstrate. i'd really appreciate explanations in beginner-friendly language because most of the electronics terminology is completely new to me.
i'd especially appreciate a proper circuit diagram and specific component recommendations rather than just a general explanation of how smart irrigation works. if there's a simpler or more reliable way to build this while keeping the same concept, i'm open to that too.
also, which subreddits would be best for getting help with the actual circuit and wiring?
tl;dr: i've been assigned a smart irrigation model using rainwater harvesting, a soil moisture sensor, an automatic water pump and solar energy for my class 11 science exhibition. ik nothing about electronics, so i need help with the complete circuit diagram, compatible components, wiring and how to build a working prototype from scratch, used chatgpt for grammar correction and structuring the post, but questions are mine.
