Wanted review: incredible performers, but the show didn't work for me

Post image

Grabbed a last minute ticket on an app and went in pretty blind. I really wanted to like this one, but I can't say I'd recommend it.

I found the plot confusing and honestly not that interesting. Early on there's a line about how outlandish some family legends can be, and I got excited because it felt like they were setting up an unreliable narrator. That never really goes anywhere, and I wish they'd leaned into it more.

It reminded me a bit of Hustlers, where so much depends on the audience sympathizing with women doing illegal things. The difference is that Wanted never digs into the morality of it. They rob a bunch of people, get the money, and that's kind of it.

Then the outlaw plot gets dropped almost entirely for a storyline about one of the sisters having to pass, which I found a lot less compelling. There's also a weird choice where the male love interest having inherited slaves is treated like a secret or reveal, when given the place, his wealth and time period that should just be kind of inferred by the sisters. It made that whole thread more confusing than it needed to be.

If you're sitting balcony left or right, be warned that sightlines are rough. At a pivotal moment at the end of Act 1, one of the sisters is singing and her head was completely cut off for me by this triangle awning they use for projections. The projections themselves didn't add much beyond cheesy "western country" graphics. I also wasn't a fan of the bit where they cover and uncover chairs to make a hotel room bed, which played more comical than I think they intended. For such an elaborate set, the stage often looked weirdly bare.

Everyone on that stage is ridiculously talented. The actresses playing Sissy and Talulah were the standouts for me. That said, a lot of the songs started to blend together by the end, and neither love interest was interesting enough to match either sister.
Curious if anyone else saw it and had a different take, especially from the orchestra.

Paranormal Audience Activity

I understand late arrivals and different audience behavior… but when the woman in front of me kept checking her phone during act 1, I politely tapped and asked “can you please not look at your phone” to which she replied “I can check on my daughter. People look at their phones!” And I said “not really” and her partner looked back and said loudly “yes we can Go Suck a Dick!” … fortunately no phones were checked for the rest of the act but come intermission- they looked back at my friend and I and said “others are looking at their phones in the show.”
I went the an usher and explained the situation and even the couple behind me came up and said it was wildly inappropriate. They said they would look into it.
We returned after intermission with a security guard at our row and even though I was scared to go back, the security guard said they’d heard the issue and the woman was concerned because “she’s pregnant.” Then I watched the guard and the couple do a peace sign and a thumbs up- so nothing was taken care of. As a woman who is on her way to motherhood, I’m confused… are you watching your child on your phone on a night you went out? Are you watching your current pregnancy? Why would you partner yell at me to go suck a dick when I just didn’t want to see your screen blow up during the show? Maybe they’re celebrity adjacent or knew people, but asking to put your phone away doesnr warrant the response (to a lesbian no less)We’ve lost the plot. And I lost the second act of a damn fun show.

Helen Shaw of the NYT does a double review write-up for these two Off-Broadway premiers and is far more positive (albeit still mixed) on Midnight over Benjamin Button.

Review My Broadway Adventure!

Post image
19 Upvotes

My friend, and I visited NYC in early October, and we chose three shows together along with two others we saw separately. No spoilers!

Our 1st show was Stranger Things.

The show was easily watched for anyone who has not seen the Netflix show, and the plot was rather interesting with some excellent scenes/effects. There are some special effects we had absolutely no idea how the series design team pulled it off, but, it was spectacular! We had seats 5th row center in orchestra which was very good, and we could see everything just fine. House was packed. Solid 9.5/10 show.

We ran into Victor de Paula Rocha ( Henry Creel ) on the subway platform a couple of hours, give or take, after a late supper post show, and he chatted with us for several minutes while we waited for our trains. Very pleasant, funny, humble, and kind young man. Had a lovely conversation, and he happily snapped some photos with us.

Next up was The Lost Boys.

I love the movie. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting from the musical, but, it was pretty good. The music wasn’t terrible, but, wasn’t great either. Shoshana, and Ali were definitely a highlight along with their singing. The sets were pretty amazing too. What’s not to love about flying vampires? Solid 7.5/10. The 2nd act really could have used some tweaking, and tighter songs as it was a bit of a slog. Also, had 5 row, center orchestra, and you can see everything just fine. House was full for our night of performance.

Stage door was a bit of a zoo with the super fans, but, the cast was kind, took their time to visit, sign things, and do photos.

Our 3rd show was Rocky Horror.

This was a bucket list show for me! For our cast we had Rosie O Donnell as the Narrator, and Jake Shears as Frank. Rosie was having fun with the audience call backs as was the rest of the cast. It was fun, weird ( part of the set is out in the house), goofy, camp, and the audience was having a grand time with callbacks. Valentina ( Columbia ) was being heckled by some audience members, and she heckled right back not missing a beat. ( it was rather rude, but, she handled it fine). Audience call backs were on point, and not excessive. Jake Shears as Frank was simply amazing as was the rest of the cast.

We had front row seats which puts you right in the action! For those of you wanting a chance to do the Time Warp on stage, 2 row on the end, either side is your seat. ;)

Stage door is was amazing as a fair amount of the principals came out to greet, sign things, and visit. I suck at selfies. Jake and George ( Dr Scott/Eddie) both took my camera, and did photos with me! They were so nice to do that. 10/10! House was full. I highly recommend seeing the show if you get a chance.

4th show was Schimgadoon.

I saw the show specifically for Alex Brightman. He is funny as ever. The show is a love letter to Broadway musicals, and I get the fan base of Broadway is divided on the show, I thought it was campy, bright costumes, funny characters, and just overall fun. Alex’s character makes jokes about musicals, and the audience was howling with laughter. It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea, but, it’s a good time.

I had 6th row center, and it was perfect, word to the wise about seats. They are tiny, and a bit cramped. Show is at the Nederlander, and cannot imagine it’s comfortable up in the mezzanine either. Solid 10/10 for camp! House was full.

Stage door was quiet, but, a few came out for autographs, photos, and chitchat. Alex does not.

My friend saw Paranormal Activity, and said it had jump scares, spooky, and creepy. They would recommend it to anyone that enjoyed the movies, and liked spooky fun.

The lovely people from the sub that recommended Joe Allen for dinner, thank you! We enjoyed the food, the atmosphere, and the theatre memories on the wall.

A good time was had by all!

Review The Visitors First Preview

Post image
23 Upvotes

Saw the first preview of The Visitors tonight.

First of all, I appreciate a well-propped, maximalist set. This set was a feast for the eyes and really felt lived in.

I went in blind and was glad I did. I recommend doing the same. The story unfurls fairly quickly and once you think you know where it's going, it shifts. I believed the characters and the sibling dynamics.

The characters were defined, maybe a little too well. I saw Will Pullen in the Receptionist and he's 2 for 2 in characters I disliked. (That just means he did his job). Danny Wolohan was the stand out for me. Though, I will watch Celia Keenan-Bolger in just about anything now.

Great all around performances by the entire cast, but this play is centered around the siblings. Funny, disturbing, relatable, and messy. A true family story.

Plus, it's a tight 90 mins, no intermission. I enjoyed this one!

Review The Lost Boys Exceeded My Expectations

Before I went to NYC this past weekend (10/17-10/18) I was heavily debating between seeing The Lost Boys or Operation Mincemeat. I’ve seen countless reviews saying that TLB was forgettable and the songs weren’t great, even tho it’s a spectacle. And that OM was the greatest thing since sliced bread and ppl saw it countless times and the story was better and it constantly won over TLB. I did not see OM but I did see the matinee show of TLB on Sunday and I don’t know what yall are smoking in this sub lol.

To preface this, I’ve never seen the original movie so I don’t have anything to compare it too. And I didn’t know much about this show besides it was about 80s rock vampires and had a lot of noteworthy special effects. Also to preface Mason Olshavsky was Michael and Ashley Jenkins was Lucy for my show. And I sat in the right balcony, row C seat 24. So like, three rows from the front and 3 seats in front the side. Decent view but missed some visuals.

The songs were amazing and I’ve been playing the soundtrack on repeat since I saw it Sunday. The characters had fun personalities and I liked the chemistry between most of them. The vocal talent was insane, and I really loved the understudies for Michael and Lucy more than the original cast cause they sounded so rich and clear and soulful. I will admit there were a lot of belting songs. Like mostly belting songs. And the story was super predictable. But it wasn’t bad. Also the flying was super cool and the ending fight scene special effects were fun. I actually expected more special effects with how much ppl praised it and tbh those didn’t meet my expectations. Also I had balcony so some effects didn’t have the same effect from my view lol. But I’ve been reading that there were more stunts that were removed during the previews. Like I heard about a bridge jump and an elevator and an aerial fight? And there were also more story beats and songs that were removed after the previews. So I’m wondering if maybe that’s what ppl were judging when they said the show was forgettable and had bad songs? I know taste is subjective so idk maybe I have bad taste but I absolutely loved the show. I actually wish I got to see the original versions of the show now to compare.

I think the only thing it was lacking for me was more story, deeper development of relationships between characters, and then ending with the final fight was super anti climatic. Also the emphasis on Sam being queer felt extremely forced. And I would’ve loved more variety in the music, like maybe one more rock song from the band.

But I still loved every minute of the show and I really want a pro-shot made cause I wanna see the show from a better angle (cause I missed a lot of the edges of the stage from the balcony) and see the effects how they were intended to look. And I don’t wanna keep paying $$$ to travel to NYC to see it multiple times. The show had a lot of heart. It was funny, dramatic, romantic, visually stunning.

Now I feel like I need to watch OM to see if it really is 10x better than TLB cause I really can’t imagine it being so from what I’ve seen through ads.

Probably to balance out last week's cancelled performance, they've added a matinee for tomorrow (10/22) at 1 PM and lots of seats are up for grabs. Hope this helps!

I’m very curious to hear how the invited dress looked tonight (when it lets out)! I’m going to the first preview tomorrow but feel like press and buzz have been pretty limited so far. I’d been quite excited for this, hoping it’s phenomenal!

Discussion Theatreview is now on Android too!

• Upvotes

A couple of months ago, I shared Theatreview here as a way to keep track of every show you've seen (original post). I built this app because I was looking for a better way to keep track of theatre productions I've seen, including being able to easily keep track of specific actors I saw in particular roles.

Since then, I've been working on the Android version and it's finally live on Google Play!

If you've been waiting for Android, you can find it here: https://theatreview.app/go/play-store

I'd love to hear what you think, and thanks to everyone who gave feedback on the original post!

Discussion Oh Mary question: Is Mary supposed to be talented?

I saw Oh Mary for the first time recently, and one thing I was thinking about at the end was this: Is Mary supposed to be good at cabaret?

Is the intention of the finale number “Mary got what she wanted, and she is killing it with these vocals and this choreography” or “Mary got what she wanted, and she’s way out of her depth”?

Like, it’s insane and hilarious and euphoric, no question. A triumphant moment. But is the intention/whatever that Mary is a medium talent?

Reason I ask: I don’t want to be insulting when I say how the Mary I saw seemed with the singing and the choreography. But I’m on the fence on whether or not it was a choice.
