I am Sam Webb. I played Drew Sharp in Breaking Bad. AMA!

I know this is long overdue, but better late than never, right?

To kick things off, here are a few tidbits about my connection to the show:

-My family and I were fans since the pilot, so I was well aware of the significance of it all.

-I grew up minutes from the high school used for J. P. Wynne.

-My dad was an extra in episode 2.02. (my episode was 5.05)

-The first time I ever handled a tarantula was the day we shot the intro scene.

In the years since Breaking Bad, I’ve graduated from UNM with a political science degree and spend most of my free time mountain biking, tinkering with sports cars, and raising my two Dobermans.

Feel free to connect with me on social media!

Ask away! I’ll do my best to get to everyone.

Identity has been verified with mods.

Edit:

Alright guys, as the night winds down I just want to thank everyone for participating and for all the kind words! The Breaking Bad community means the world to me and I’ll be connected to you all for life.

The most surreal part of all of this is the insane butterfly effect and overlaps.

My favorite example of this was seeing Drake perform for the first time in Phoenix a couple years ago. He’s a big Breaking Bad fan (friends with Aaron and Bryan, and his nickname for Rihanna when they dated was Fring). I had tickets close to the stage, and I remember making eye contact with him a few times thinking “dude, you don’t know it, but you know EXACTLY who I am.”

One of my first purchases with acting money was a set of Beats headphones when they were all the craze, and I vividly remember listening to Take Care (and a lot of old Kanye) in my trailer on set during downtime. It felt like a crazy full circle moment.

Anyway, I feel like everyone who is a fellow fan of the show is an extension of this little glitch in the matrix, and I’m happy y’all are a part of this wild story.

I’ll keep answering questions as they trickle in for as long as the mods want to keep the discussion open, and I’ll be more active in this sub and share anything else fun when it comes to mind!

Daniel Moncada, who played the infamous Leonel Salamanca in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, now regularly livestreams video games while dressed as his character from the shows. Despite keeping the same iconic suit, bald head and serious appearance, his streams show a much lighter side of him as he laughs, jokes, talks and plays with viewers while streaming. It has given fans a completely different look at the actor behind one of the franchise's most intimidating characters, while allowing Daniel Moncada to continue engaging with the role years after first playing it.

RJ Had a display at NTX Universe, it was beautiful

He was supposed to be there for meet and greets + autographs. Was really excited to meet him actually.

Then well you know. Giancarlo was there, he was really nice and supportive but he kept glancing at the booth and the memorial display put up and you could tell it was affecting him.

Reach out and check on your friends people. You never know.

I never hated Skylar

And I never understood the hate towards her either.

I thought she was a brilliant character - starting out as a total stereotype and gradually progressing over the series to become more nuanced, complex, powerful, sharp, etc overtime.

More people seem to be coming around to team Skylar these days and I just wonder what the hate for her was to start with.

Am I missing something or was it literally just misogyny?

Walters happy ending? Spoiler

Just finished the show, obviously incredible, is it the consensus that Walt himself arguably had a happy ending. I know that obviously almost everything went south, but especially in his last conversation with Skyler, when he says I did it for myself. Is that not a kind of moment of freedom. Like no longer is it all for nothing(as he says to Walt jr in last phone call with him) but he done it and he loved the feeling it gave him, and the final look at the meth lab was proud, like reminiscing on all he had done. I mean baby blue is perfect. And he was destined to die regardless(probably but obviously didn't get proper chemo), and he avenges hank(to an extent) gets Lydia in the coldest way possible, sets junior and the family up for life(obviously maybe not Skyler due to dea), and dies with an almost smirk(or was I seeing things?)

Sorry if post is a little scruffy I just finished the show and am desperate to talk about it (please no spoilers for el camino or bcs)

[Rewatch] '4 Days Out' is still incredible

Reached this episode on my rewatch...don't know how other people feel but this I thought was the first true 10/10 episode of S2.

We get so much insight into the psyche of Walt, and most importantly into Walt and Jesse as a duo. Their dynamic here was fleshed out more than in any other episode prior (for obvious reasons). And we also get to see things we already knew, but this time by bringing them completely onto the surface. The fact we see Walt facing the last leg of his existentialism - he's at the end of the road - really helps us take an actual peek into how he really feels after everything that's happened. In words, not just in his mind or in expressions.

And the ending being our very first outright confrontation with the fact that this wasn't all just for family, and more importantly - Walt WANTED to die. Because he wanted to go out on a high. Cook, set everything up for his loved ones, and go out on his own terms doing what he felt at home with, living dangerously and excitingly (as Hank once told him to), and being on top of the world.

But the concept of him surviving at the end is haunting for Walt. Its what really kills him. He cannot dare face going back to the "normal" life he once had NOW...after everything he's been through since then. That regular breakfast - school - dinner - sleep? That feeling of mediocrity? A sense of inadequacy? No. Thats what really kills him. And so the ending was him realizing: if he's faced with the prospect of survival...the only way for him to feel alive is he must go back to make a killing.

If Walter stayed in Gray Matter he would have ruined it too?

Alternate universe: the company succeeds before Walter leaves and he stays for the money

Seeing how his big drug empire didn't last even a year because the guy is lousy as a leader of an organization makes me believe that the guy would have screwed up if he stayed in the company

Ok now maybe the young Walter wasn't so broke and the company would have run its course, or it would just be a matter of time for Walter to explode and ruin him in some way by going to another company to ruin it anyway for wanting to be the boss

As far as I know, Walter was the one with the ideas, Eliot was in charge of the business and Gretchen was in charge of giving the money at the beginning, maybe that would screw Walter for not being the one who is in absolute command?

Estou começando a quarta temporada agr e to bem animada.

Watching at 14 vs 28

I watched it when it was ending because it was super hyped up, but never fully grasped the fools hue and deep themes.

Differences I noticed:

How big of an operation they were running (Gus and Cartel) and how serious it was . How much planning goes into it (I manage a business now) so I can see the pressures

How depressing it is. The cancer , the deaths, the addiction (which I’ve been through) and how much pressure it would be to have that much money that’s not clean. Hiding it from your family and just wanting to be alone . I could go more in depth but this show is super heavy and depressing when you watch as an adult because you can feel for everyone .

I used to hate Skylar , but I realized she was in the right. If I did what Walter did , my wife would kill me for dissapearing . Then throwing the meth money on her to launder , if I was her I would be pissed of bringing this toxicity into the family .

How much I appreciate Saul Goodman. He’s genuinly a good guy even if it’s for money he sticks up for his clients.

How successful Gus was at operations. I am an operations manager here and I can compare and contrast even though it’s drugs and revenue in the millions per day

Tedbeneke and the taxes , never understood but I do now.

And lastly , how I absolutely hate Walter white . When they brought Jesse into Gus inner circle and brought him in top level emissions , Walter was so jealous and throwing temper tantrums like a kid. Be a man bro , stop manipulating Jesse for your own benefit. Figure it out yourself . You messed up and you have to make up for it .

It broke my heart to the point it was unbearable when Jesse would go on a mission and get praised , then come back to Walt degrading him for not killing Gus. Like Bro, do it yourself. Not only that it’s not easy. I truly hate Walter and think he’s such a p*ssy idc how tough he is he acts like a girl. Definitely worst character.

If he would’ve just stuck with gale and made a bunch of money and been peaceful but would’ve worked together to take care of the cartel business when they wanted a chemist . All those things . Walter ruined everything like a loser .

Why do you think Jesse’s family wasn’t explored more?

Post image
2.3k Upvotes

Like his little brother. His secret weed stash dropped like a bomb and never touched again. And why Jesse ended up the way he did is also something I wished was a bit more developed. Was he just wanting a different & more “exciting” life from the comfortable & constructive upper class? Or was it driven more by issues with his parents? Or was his descent into the drug world driven by something else entirely? When did things become irreparable with his family? We got a close view of Walt’s family life & history but I always felt Jesse was a bit robbed in this regard as the other MC.

Would Hank really get blowback for not catching Walt?

They always bring up this point that if Walter was exposed as Heisenberg, Hank would lose his job for not seeing what was right under his nose. But Hank was the only person who kept searching for answers about this case, even when everyone else was convinced it was a done deal. Would you really get fired for NOT solving a case like this?

Fring’s house

I remember seeing children’s toys in Gus Fring’s house. From what I recall it’s the first time we see his home. What up wit dat?

Just part of the ruse? A storyline that was to have him be a father or grandfather but changed? Production oversight?

I dont understand the hate for Skyler

Can someone explain to me why so many watchers of breaking bad hate Skyler with a burning passion? Every time I see a video on tiktok or youtube I always see someone despising skyler.

What I don’t understand is, Walt is clearly the villain, he has dozens of negative qualities. He is manipulative and greedy, he poisoned Brock (a child) and he literally mass manufactured meth, he was terrible to skyler more and more as the seasons went by and despite walt definitely being the bad guy, most of the hate is projected onto skyler because she cheated with Ted or gave money to him.

This doesnt make a whole lot of sense to me because her cheating was clearly a desperate attempt to force walt out of the house by emotionally wounding him enough and letting herself regain some sort of control when walt refused to accept a divorce and would not leave the house (despite skyler being 100% entitled to these conditions, he is literally running a drug empire?) most people will run up this argument with “but walt made meth for the sake of his family she should be grateful.” if it wasnt implied enough throughout the show, walt literally admits he didnt even make meth for any loving or caring reason, but out of greed. He made meth because he liked it .

Skyler was an emotional wreck by the time she cheated and gave money to Ted, which to me is so easily understandable, (again, her husband is running a drug empire) and her decisions to do the things she did were clearly irrational as a result of Walts abuse. To those who see Skyler as a villain, what did you expect her to do? Sit quietly while her husband commits hundreds of life sentences worth of crimes? I don’t use this term a lot, but it’s clearly just misogyny When all of Walts clear violations are forgotten about and the blame is placed on Skyler.

Got to meet RJ Mitte at the Renaissance Festival on my birthday in 2024

Post image
3.1k Upvotes

Back in 2024, I was at the Renaissance Festival celebrating my 23rd birthday when I noticed someone in the distance talking to a group of people who looked a LOT like RJ Mitte. I remember turning to the people I was with and asking if I was seeing things or if that was actually him lol.

Eventually I decided to walk up to him and said, “RJ I love your work!” We ended up having a short conversation, and he was genuinely such a nice and down to earth guy. He even asked what brought me out to the Renaissance Festival that day, and when I told him it was my 23rd birthday, he joked about how I only had a couple more years until I was kicked off my parents health insurance 😂

It was such a random interaction but one that I’ll always remember. What stood out to me most was how genuine he seemed. He could’ve easily just said thanks and gone about his day, but he actually took the time to have a conversation with me.

I’m really glad I got the chance to meet him even if it was just for a few minutes. He seemed like a genuinely kind person, and it’s a memory I’ll always appreciate.

Why are Ed's rules for Walt and Jesse so different?

Spoilers for some if the ending of BB and El Camino, which I just recently finished both for the first time.

When Walt finally uses Ed to disappear to New Hampshire in the show, Ed basically explains that he will never be able to leave the cabin. He even says that if he ever does leave the cabin, then Ed will stop helping him. The reason given for this is that Walt is the subject of a nationwide search, thus he cannot allowed to be free in any circumstance.

Yet, in El Camino, the movie very explicitly depicts that Jesse himself is actively being looked for by the police on a national level, and yet Ed just lets him be a normal fugitive in Alaska.

Why the drastic difference in how he handles things?
