I am Sam Webb. I played Drew Sharp in Breaking Bad. AMA!

I know this is long overdue, but better late than never, right?

To kick things off, here are a few tidbits about my connection to the show:

-My family and I were fans since the pilot, so I was well aware of the significance of it all.

-I grew up minutes from the high school used for J. P. Wynne.

-My dad was an extra in episode 2.02. (my episode was 5.05)

-The first time I ever handled a tarantula was the day we shot the intro scene.

In the years since Breaking Bad, I’ve graduated from UNM with a political science degree and spend most of my free time mountain biking, tinkering with sports cars, and raising my two Dobermans.

Feel free to connect with me on social media!

Ask away! I’ll do my best to get to everyone.

Identity has been verified with mods.

Edit:

Alright guys, as the night winds down I just want to thank everyone for participating and for all the kind words! The Breaking Bad community means the world to me and I’ll be connected to you all for life.

The most surreal part of all of this is the insane butterfly effect and overlaps.

My favorite example of this was seeing Drake perform for the first time in Phoenix a couple years ago. He’s a big Breaking Bad fan (friends with Aaron and Bryan, and his nickname for Rihanna when they dated was Fring). I had tickets close to the stage, and I remember making eye contact with him a few times thinking “dude, you don’t know it, but you know EXACTLY who I am.”

One of my first purchases with acting money was a set of Beats headphones when they were all the craze, and I vividly remember listening to Take Care (and a lot of old Kanye) in my trailer on set during downtime. It felt like a crazy full circle moment.

Anyway, I feel like everyone who is a fellow fan of the show is an extension of this little glitch in the matrix, and I’m happy y’all are a part of this wild story.

I’ll keep answering questions as they trickle in for as long as the mods want to keep the discussion open, and I’ll be more active in this sub and share anything else fun when it comes to mind!

Daniel Moncada, who played the infamous Leonel Salamanca in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, now regularly livestreams video games while dressed as his character from the shows. Despite keeping the same iconic suit, bald head and serious appearance, his streams show a much lighter side of him as he laughs, jokes, talks and plays with viewers while streaming. It has given fans a completely different look at the actor behind one of the franchise's most intimidating characters, while allowing Daniel Moncada to continue engaging with the role years after first playing it.

If Walter stayed in Gray Matter he would have ruined it too?

Alternate universe: the company succeeds before Walter leaves and he stays for the money

Seeing how his big drug empire didn't last even a year because the guy is lousy as a leader of an organization makes me believe that the guy would have screwed up if he stayed in the company

Ok now maybe the young Walter wasn't so broke and the company would have run its course, or it would just be a matter of time for Walter to explode and ruin him in some way by going to another company to ruin it anyway for wanting to be the boss

As far as I know, Walter was the one with the ideas, Eliot was in charge of the business and Gretchen was in charge of giving the money at the beginning, maybe that would screw Walter for not being the one who is in absolute command?

Do you Think Gretchen and Elliot made good on their word and got Walt Jr. The money Walt left?

I always wonder if they heard about walts passing on the news if they would assume the contract killers were uninterested and called his bluff, or if they did it. I can't tell. I can see how narritively it would be interesting to have had it all been for nothing and they turned the money into the police. Much more satisfying to believe he got it to him though..

So what do you think?

Why do you think Jesse’s family wasn’t explored more?

Post image

Like his little brother. His secret weed stash dropped like a bomb and never touched again. And why Jesse ended up the way he did is also something I wished was a bit more developed. Was he just wanting a different & more “exciting” life from the comfortable & constructive upper class? Or was it driven more by issues with his parents? Or was his descent into the drug world driven by something else entirely? When did things become irreparable with his family? We got a close view of Walt’s family life & history but I always felt Jesse was a bit robbed in this regard as the other MC.

Would Hank really get blowback for not catching Walt?

They always bring up this point that if Walter was exposed as Heisenberg, Hank would lose his job for not seeing what was right under his nose. But Hank was the only person who kept searching for answers about this case, even when everyone else was convinced it was a done deal. Would you really get fired for NOT solving a case like this?

Context. Breaking Bad actor Luis Moncada received a relentless amount of emails surrounding the recent passing of RJ and this is his response.

Got to meet RJ Mitte at the Renaissance Festival on my birthday in 2024

Post image

Back in 2024, I was at the Renaissance Festival celebrating my 23rd birthday when I noticed someone in the distance talking to a group of people who looked a LOT like RJ Mitte. I remember turning to the people I was with and asking if I was seeing things or if that was actually him lol.

Eventually I decided to walk up to him and said, “RJ I love your work!” We ended up having a short conversation, and he was genuinely such a nice and down to earth guy. He even asked what brought me out to the Renaissance Festival that day, and when I told him it was my 23rd birthday, he joked about how I only had a couple more years until I was kicked off my parents health insurance 😂

It was such a random interaction but one that I’ll always remember. What stood out to me most was how genuine he seemed. He could’ve easily just said thanks and gone about his day, but he actually took the time to have a conversation with me.

I’m really glad I got the chance to meet him even if it was just for a few minutes. He seemed like a genuinely kind person, and it’s a memory I’ll always appreciate.

Why are Ed's rules for Walt and Jesse so different?

Spoilers for some if the ending of BB and El Camino, which I just recently finished both for the first time.

When Walt finally uses Ed to disappear to New Hampshire in the show, Ed basically explains that he will never be able to leave the cabin. He even says that if he ever does leave the cabin, then Ed will stop helping him. The reason given for this is that Walt is the subject of a nationwide search, thus he cannot allowed to be free in any circumstance.

Yet, in El Camino, the movie very explicitly depicts that Jesse himself is actively being looked for by the police on a national level, and yet Ed just lets him be a normal fugitive in Alaska.

Why the drastic difference in how he handles things?

I’m on my first watch through of the show and im on episode 11 of season 4 and Walt has VOLUNTARILY crashed the car and the first thing in my mind was “wow that poor car getting messed up again” now all I can think about is, is Walter White even insurable at this point or is he just not reporting the what seems like weekly accidents?

In Better Call Saul, does Chuck McGill live just down the block from Jesse Pinkman's Aunt's house?

Post image

Screenshot from BCS S03e10. Jimmy arrives at Chuck's house. That Spanish villa looks like the house Jesse Pinkman will later inherit from his aunt in Breaking Bad. Of course that style is likely quite common in upscale areas of ABQ. Definitely looks like the same neighborhood, though.

(Rest in peace, RJ)

What do they think Walt is doing with his time?

Are we supposed to assume he’s actively working at the car wash as a cover story? How does he have time for that with all of the illegal responsibilities he’s managing? Do Hank, Marie, or Jr never wonder where he is or what he’s doing?

Gus was more to blame for his conflict with Walt Spoiler

I’m rewatching Breaking Bad, and I really don’t understand why Gus was so determined to get rid of Walt over him killing two street dealers.

Walt only killed them to save Jesse’s life. Sure, he went against Gus’s orders, but was that really enough to have him killed, over two low level dealers? Walt was incredibly valuable to Gus, and as far as I can see, he would’ve happily continued cooking if Gus had just moved on. Gus also gets closer with Jesse later on and works well with him, which makes his decision to treat Walt’s actions as unforgivable feel even more inconsistent.

As for Gale, Gus had already planned to kill Walt and replace him with Gale. Walt only got Gale murdered because Mike was literally about to execute him. What else was he supposed to do? Also, wasn’t Jesse the one that killed him, why did Fring seem to hold the killing so much more against Walt than Jesse.

And if anything, Walt was actually helping Gus by keeping Hank away from his operation, even crashing his car to stop Hank from investigating the laundry. Surely Gus should've recognised how loyal Walt was to him rather than always trying to get rid of him.

It feels like Gus created the entire conflict himself. He tried to kill Walt, Walt defended himself, and then Gus continued holding that against him. I understand that he valued loyalty and control, but surely losing two street dealers wasn’t worth destroying his relationship with the best chemist he’d ever employed, seems like Gus’s pride and ego was as big, if not, bigger than Walt's contrary to what Mike said later on.

J Roberts interview

Saw some posts here that are about what might have happened to J Roberts (writer of Seven Thirty-Seven and Peekaboo) who seems to have disappeared after S2. Apparently, he gave this interview on some writing-related podcast in 2017:

https://seatedatthewriterstable.libsyn.com/97-sharpening-his-craft-while-writing-on-breaking-bad-jay-roberts

Certainly doesn't sound like he was harbouring any ill feelings, though he doesn't say anything about why he left.

Couldn't reply to any of the original posts since they're all archived.

What’s your interpretation of Ed’s response to Walt about giving his money to his family Spoiler

When Walt asks Ed if he’d give his money to his family once he passes, Ed replies vaguely with “If I said yes, would you believe me?”. Knowing Ed’s character, this seems like an attempt to shut down the conversation and keep himself neutral to the situation, but the more I think about it, I can’t see Ed just taking that cash and pocketing it for himself. It is his due diligence to work with his clients and help them out, so this just seems like an extension of that.
