Serious Answers Only Are there any housing estates in the UK like the one in the film "Rita Sue and Bob to"?

I do not mean, slightly edgy, I mean looks lie the opening scene in Rita Sue and Bob to. Butter shaw estate.

I am please to say I google mapped the Butter shaw estate today and it looks much better. Barely any boarded up houses etc.

Do estates like the one in the film I mentioned still exist? like high dereliction, burnt out houses, sofas being used in the front garden etc?

I am from Nottingham and whilst we have some tasty estates, the ones that were highly boarded up have been redeveloped such as Top valley etc.

So my question is, do estates like the Old Buttershaw estate in Bradford still exist in the Uk today or are are they almost obsolete?

Unemployment is down, wages are up, economy is growing according to official statistics from today.

Yet you hear a lot of doom and gloom about how hard it is to get a job at present.

How do I remember to take my medication every day?

I have medication I am supposed to take daily. But over the last few weeks I have not taken them because I forget. I have 2 reminders on my phone one In the morning and one in the evening. I have my medication in the pill boxes so it’s easier to take. The problem is my schedule is so erratic one day I could be walking up for work at 3am the next I could be getting home from work at 3am. I’m not looking for medical advice just a simple way to make sure I take my tablets.

Edit*** thanks for all the advice guys. So it’s not an alarm it’s just a reminder I have set. I don’t have a specific routine. My job is cabin crew. Short haul so I don’t have specific hours, so one day I could be working 14 hours some days like 5. I could be working when my reminder goes off and too busy and forget, or I could be asleep even at 5pm. Maybe I need to change the time I take them to a time I will 99% not be working.

Serious Answers Only Kids fishing asked me how to catch a pike, then got abusive. How would you read the situation?

Hello, For some context I am visibly brown, and live in this little town called Brighouse. I was walking along the canal on my way home, and this kid(not older than 10-11) who is fishing with his friend (same age) who was dropping a lot of F-bombs in general calls out to me. The conversation went like this

Kid : "Excuse me, Can you teach me how to fish ? I want to learn how to catch a Pike"

Me : "Sorry bud, I don't know anything about fish or fishing"

Kid : "I have never caught a fish before and I really want to catch a Pike"

Me : "Well hopefully you do, Good luck" , I kept walking

Kid : (at this point I am visibly leaving and not even looking at him) "How do I catch it, Do I have jump into the canal ???"

Me : Shrug

the Kid and Kid's other friend who was fishing drops more F bombs, says something about S*x and started screaming a high pitched while.

It was really weird at first but in Hindsight it sounds racial too especially with 'Pike' sounding very similar to the slur

Thoughts, what do you think of this interaction ? made me feel quite unsettled.
I have tagged it serious answers, but anything is welcome

What sorts of mutual aid groups are out there and how can I find them?

Hi, I'm visiting for a couple weeks and will mostly be in London. I'm involved in food not bombs in my city here in the US but can't seem to find one in London. I'm curious if there's anything analogous where I could drop by to meet UK comrades and help out during a regular serve or distro?

I've found a few food recovery and redistribution orgs that look cool and accept volunteers, however it seems you have to sign up for a shift / potentially get some training. I am more looking for something a bit more unstructured thats not an "official" charity or nonprofit but like just a bunch of friends and neighbors helping the community by giving out free food, clothes, supplies, harm redux, etc where you can just show up on a whim, not sure if i'm explaining the vibe well (basically anarchist vibes haha I think I have some posts on my profile here about the stuff my local group does)

If you're familiar with the type of group I'm talking about and have any recs, lmk! Thanks :)

Answered TV suggestions under £450?

Hi everyone, I am looking for a reliable TV that isn't god awful build quality and not laggy / slow / unresponsive in the menus and inputs.

I've had terrible luck so far with hisense and Panasonic etc.

I was looking at some LG, but there's the whole privacy scandal ATM, not sure how much weight to put on that though.

I've looked at some Samsung TVs and the reviews are just awful, breaking, colour leaking at the edges, blurry pictures and motion blur etc.

We will just be using it for streaming shows and movies, nothing else.

Needs to be 43-50 inches and have no motion blur, smooth menu operations, and not smash to pieces at the slightest stress / touch.

Everything just feels terrible build quality these days, I don't know if I just need to pay much much much more, or if it's just the way things are now, but £450 really is our limit.

Edit: thank you so much for all the replies, very very helpful. The tip on getting a dongle for running the apps is a fantastic idea, thank you!

I've found TCL 50Q6C-UK 50 Inch QD-Mini LED to look like a promising contender for £449, comes with 5 year warranty, high backlight hours, supposedly smooth interface and vibrant colours etc with good reviews.

I will keep looking based on your recommendations!

Serious Answers Only Are professional/graduate roles still worth it?

I've taken a break (gap yar) from university (second year, going into third). Unfortunately, basically due to just not getting a year in industry alongside poor planning.

In the past few months I've voyaged into blue collar work. I've been landscaping, labouring, standard deliveries (Amazon flex), truck driving (license achieved through Army Reserves). Seen a fair amount basically and I think many people of university background never actually see any of it.

When I was applying for a year in industry, pay rates for even big 4 was only like 30k (with a £42 quid commute too).

I met 18 year old sparkies on 50k. I myself am (by luck tbh) on 70 in my new job, with easy progression to 100 if I stay 2-3 years. People call me trying to recruit me, the interviews aren't a big humiliation fest. There is great progression in starting your own business in your trade, easily surpassing 6 figures. The competition is on the floor too, most people and manage in the trades are frankly terrible at management.

I just can't help but dread going back and graduating. I'll do all that effort with the applications to maybe get a shit paying role that has middling progression.

Maybe a bit of an existential crisis dressed up as a question. Any positive grad experiences out there?

What is best supermarket cinnamon?

I've found that most supermarket cinnamon brands don't really taste like cinnamon, more like cloves. I'm looking for the fragrant, sweet kind. Any suggestions?

Turning left at a roundabout by turning right, going all the way round, 450° and then exiting. What's wrong with that?

It can help if you're on road where your path to turn left is blocked by traffic queuing straight over the roundabout. I haven't seen it done often.

Assuming it's safe to do so, of course.

  • Agreed it's 270° if you choose to see it that way

People who paid higher rent to live closer to work, what did you actually do with the time you saved?

Paying more rent to avoid a long commute sounds like buying back part of your day. But I’m curious about what happens after the first few weeks.

If you’ve made that move, what actually changed? More sleep, cooking, exercise, seeing friends? Or did work start eating into the time you saved?

Also curious about the less obvious downsides, like leaving a neighbourhood you liked or moving away from family.

What improved enough to justify the extra rent, and what surprised you?

Serious Answers Only Can I adjust my salt grinder?

I bought this from TKMaxx last month and I could have sworn it said adjustable, but I'm too stupid/not brave enough to take it apart and see if it is indeed adjustable. It currently dispenses like talcum powder and I'd like it less fine if possible

**Edit: thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏

Serious Answers Only Why do so many older blokes in UK gyms do really fast reps with seemingly little regard for form?

Something I’ve noticed in gyms here is that quite a lot of older men seem to absolutely fly through their sets.

For example, on tricep pushdowns they’ll do quick, light reps, rather than controlling the movement back up/the negative part of the rep. I seem to notice it much more with older gym-goers than younger ones.

Definitely not saying they’re doing it wrong as some of them have probably been training for decades, is there actually some benefit to doing fast reps like this that I’m missing? Or was it just how things were taught back in the day?

Curious whether anyone else has noticed this in UK gyms.

Ladies of AskUK - what are your thoughts on a moustache on a guy?

As a 51 year old lady I've always found them to be a massive turn off. I'm not adverse to a bit of facial hair but it's just that top lip topiary which just makes me recoil.

I know they're becoming more popular again with younger guys (despite my best hopes we had seen the back of them), so I was just wondering what the younger ladies amongst us feel about them.

How long do retail stores take for post-interview results/updates?

I had an interview on Thursday for a retail store, felt like it went super well (it was my first job interview ever, so who actually knows).

Just wondering how long a response time usually is for a chain retail store. Which shop and how long did it take to hear back, if you ever even did?

Childcare jobs in England, how is it?

Hi everyone!

First off I know that you can find a lot of information online but I d also love to get some more personal answers from ppl who might have moved or work in the UK childcare system.

I m 27, German, and currently living in Germany. My partner lives in England, and I d really like to move there in the future. I m trying to figure out whether pursuing my current education is the right choice and whether I would need to finish my training before moving if I wanted to work in childcare in England.

I'm currently in Year 2 at a vocational school in Germany, working towards my Abitur alongside training to become an "Erzieherin" (early childhood educator/childcare professional).

My education works like this:

3 years of school-based education, including the Abitur (A-Levels?) and the main theoretical/ part practical part of my Erzieher training.

1 additional year of Anerkennungsjahr, which is a practical recognition year that I have to complete to qualify fully as an Erzieherin.

In Germany, Erzieherinnen can work with different age groups and in various settings, including nurseries, kindergartens, after-school care and other social or educational services as well.as residential groups for kids 0-18.

I'm mainly looking for advice from people who work in childcare in England.

I'd especially like to know:

Do I need to finish my entire education in Germany?

What does my education translate to?

And do you get paid well for what you do?

Thanks in advance !:)

Was it standard at your secondary school to do indoor PE in bare feet? Was it optional or mandatory? Always wondered why my school made us do this instead of trainers/ plimsoles lol

Seems to be a UK thing... I know some schools was mainly for gymnastics and dance but others all indoor PE too.

Do You Think AI Is Going To Be The Biggest ‘Touch Grass’ Revolution For Future Generations?

I’ve just seen a video for the first time I couldn’t actually tell if it was real or fake, and it kind of made me think of this theory as my immediate reaction was to stop doom scrolling

Do you think with like AI slop, fake influencers, bots has made or will make the internet so unusable that the next generations just lose that enthusiasm for it?

Like I’m from the first generation where we have never really watched linear tv, we watch Willne, Scottish meme compilations etc, game reviews, we talked in discords and during the good ole days would tweet and follow the people who were interesting. Internet culture was cool, learning about computing was cool too.

Today it seems social media is a ghost town, nobody is on X, Facebook etc. Reddit is ok but is the different side of the coin, the IG comments are more bots than humans, and TikTok is too to a lesser extent. Everything seems to be fake, misinformation, brain rot or radicalism.

The amount of bot posts, comments and ai video content slop I think has already made a lot of people use the internet less, I’m not sure if the true actual metrics are available but I’m sure that’s true, and I’m curious that with the next few generations, are they just gonna swerve it completely and actually engage with the older style of socialising now that it’s continuing to become unusable?

At what point does a fry up stop being a fry up?

What are, in your opinion, the essential components of a fry up, and and what point exactly does a fry up stop being a fry up?

For me, the essential components are sausage, bacon, egg and a carbohydrate component (be that potato, bread or both). Provided these four things are present, I would call it a fry up.

Is Coop genuniely 'ethical' to shop at?

I feel like a lot of their products are fair trade, they give community vibes, the products are usually very good quality. All whilst I don't feel the prices are too much higher than other supermarkets.

Are they ethic washing or are they genuinely good? I shop here daily

Why do people from the UK always poke fun at Americans for not pronouncing the H in "herbs?"

I'm curious. It gets brought up a lot.

I remember Suzy Eddie Izzard in one of their classic stand-ups - Dress to Kill, maybe? - saying "You say erbs, and we say herbs, because there's a fucking H in it."

Recently I heard Emily Blunt bring it up on an American talk show.

But it's not like you are all a stranger to silent leading H's on words, right? Words like honor, hour, honest - I don't really notice the H's in those words being pronounced when I watch UK shows or movies.

Why does this particular word get picked on?

Oh jeez the sub is automatically warning me to avoid mentioning America due to anti-American sentiment, which... I get it. Totally fair. But given that it's in my username there's no real way to avoid it so I'm going for it anyway.

Serious Answers Only Do you HAVE to have a direct debit for your energy company?

I’m going back and forth with my energy company right now - recent homeowner, they didn’t set up a direct debit properly and have recently gone “oh you need to pay more” despite being at £0 owed

My last 3 bills (I accept it’s summer) have been under £45, my direct debit they eventually set up was £80 and now they want to put it to £101!

I’m a solo homeowner, and I appreciate I can probably get the money back… but is there any actual benefits to doing it like this vs just paying off every month, or having a standing order at let’s say the original £80 that is in effect a direct debit anyway?!

Thanks for the answers!

Serious Answers Only Inspired by the roundabout question - how do people feel about merge-in-turn situations/zipper merges? Two lanes that converge into one.

The correct road usage according to the rules is to make use of both lanes until the zipper point, but it's pretty common for people to dive across early and create one long queue.

Where do you stand with this?

Personally I've done both, joined the queue, and used the empty other lane to get to the front and then just merged when I'm able to. I've had people who agree with both stances.
