Announcement PSA: Dooming
TL;DR Dooming is now banned.
There has been a huge uptick in dooming in this sub lately. Being realistic about things is fine, but lately there has been far too much "everything is shit and we should riot or move to Dubai". This sub has always been intended to lean optimistic and we are currently failing on this.
Please avoid being exhaustingly negative and pessimistic all the time. Things are not that bad. If you really think the UK is an awful place to be and everyone should leave, then this probably isn't the sub for you.
I would encourage you all to check out r/GoodNewsUK - this is a relatively new sub focused on, well, good news about the UK. We don't have enough of it lately. There are really quite a lot of reasons to be optimistic, but our media and culture has a terrible habit of encouraging pessimism and so you probably never hear about most of them. If you need some to start you off:
Employment rates are at near-record highs
Borrowing costs are coming down; we are in a rate-cutting cycle, supporting housing activity, business investment and consumer spending
Inflation is easing
Wages are rising faster than prices in real terms
Q1 2025 was the fastest growth in about a year, the UK was the fastest-growing economy in the G7 in H1 2025, and is forecast to be the second fastest-growing only behind the US going forward
We achieved a first-of-its-kind deal with the US to avoid Trump tariffs, trade deals with India and the EU, and CPTPP membership
AI/tech investment is booming, the UK is the third-largest market for this in the world after the US/China, we recently achieved the £31bn Tech Prosperity Deal with the US, including Microsoft's largest ever investment outside the US (£22bn)
Equity markets are strong
Record renewables milestones, particularly with wind, and the government has committed to accepting all the recommendations of the Fingleton Review to make building nuclear significantly cheaper
The economic reaction to recent Budgets has been generally positive; markets are beginning to see the UK as a stable and positive place to do business again
Regional inequality is narrowing, several cities and regions such as Greater Manchester, Bristol, Yorkshire, Scotland, Wales and NI are all seeing significantly faster productivity growth than London
There is reason to be positive and things seem to be slowly, stubbornly, but steadily turning in the right direction. Be patient, don't be miserable
Anyway, there's a new report reason for Dooming, so you can report posts and comments with this. If you feel outraged at this rule, you can probably just go ahead and use one of the other UK subs
To be clear, negative takes are fine, but they should be realistic, balanced, and supported with clear reasoning and evidence, not just negative for the sake of being negative
Cheers!

Announcement Reminder of Rule 1: Posts must be real questions
We've seen a ridiculous increase in the number of posts not asking genuine questions lately. This has resulted in a huge number of posts being removed which has upset a lot of people who perceive this as being political censorship of some variation
So this is a reminder: posts must be real questions. It is literally Rule 1 on the subreddit. If you are not asking a good-faith question that you're genuinely seeking real answers to, then your post is not meant for this subreddit. Do not try to play silly games with what counts as a question; moderators have complete discretion to see through this, your post will be deleted and you will get banned
Going forward, anyone breaching this rule will receive an immediate and permanent ban, until the subreddit regains some sense
Think before you post. Cheers

If you could share a bottle of wine with one British celebrity past or present who would it be?
I’d love to spend that time with Freddie Mercury.

Culture What T-shirt could you absolutely not wear in public?
so a friend and me were arguing about this the other day. we were talking about politics and I said that israel is more hated than Russia, and that I thought it was a bit weird.
he said that was BS and they are both hated the same/ both equally bad. so I said that i would gladly walk around the high street with a Russian flag t shirt while he wears an Israeli one and see who gets more shit.
he said that we would both get shit but I feel pretty confident that if I wore a Russian t shirt no one would even look twice. but if I wore an Israeli t shirt, I would worry I’d get stabbed.
who’s right?

Why are British teenagers so aggressive?
The title seems generalized so I'll say that not all of them are like this but I've experienced aggression and pressing from teenagers quite a few often times, as a teenager myself i understand i could be a target for this but i even see adults getting harassed like that, the first time it happened to me i shrugged it off thinking it was just one of the bad apples, but i've have experienced this like atleast 4-5 times and it just seems a lot more than what i would've experienced if i was in the middle east. Maybe living in a shitty area is a cause, but its even happened when i was in well developed parts of the town.

Why does Birmingham punch below it's weight?
It gets no hype whatsoever despite being a massive city you would think being an hour from London would mean it would be booming
Unpopular opinion but I just don't see that much difference between Birmingham and Manchester but you would think the latter was paradise if you listened to media
Maybe it will change when HS2 is eventually built

Should there be stricter regulations regarding radio cash giveaways?
As you can see on the picture, Heart radio "recommends" that you buy 150 entries for 40 quid.
That's a way to make people feel like they'll have a real chance at winning the prize if they literally gift Heart radio 40 pounds for absolutely nothing.
Lotteries are supposed to be a very small investment that it's done to dream and they're heavily regulated as far as I know.
Radio cash giveaways have way chiller regulations and from what I could find online, they don't disclose how many people purchase entries every week, making it impossible to know what the odds are.
Still, people are entitled to spend their money the way they want, I just feel like every week thousands of struggling people throw out the window 40 pounds hoping that they'll become rich.

Culture What happened to kids/teens ?
A small rant and smaller observation , so a daft question really but what happened with kids/ teens, currently stuck in house for a few days as waiting for replacement parts for my wheelchair, I'm mobility impaired due to issues with cancer and long term illness. Was on my way to the shops and had an immature crotch spawn and his mates decide to drive by me with a horde e-bikes and scooters and kick the hell out of my chair and back, yelling Pedo, nonce, fatso and a wide variety of other insults and I'll admit I'm overweight but I've never worked for the church or BBC .
Just curious when kids got this brazen where I lived growing up was a rough area, Stanley in Durham then moved to Meadow Well in North Tyneside, congrats mum you could pick a hole next stop, Middlesbrough I reckon if she hadn't had a stroke.
But I digress, you acted like that, either your parents dealt with you, the person you harassed dealt with you or the local bruisers did.
Police have basically said can't do anything, and if I swing at them or cause them injury I know I'm the one that'd go to prison based on what I've been told.
It's not all of them but the bad are bad, first time they've been violent but not first time I've been yelled at or spat at although typically it's older generation due to being a scrounger.
So I'm curious what the heck happened? Is it the lack of consequences ? Or is it something more?
Edit: Seems I didn't realise how common this might be , now here's a bit of a follow on, is there anything we as people can do to work on this issue? When I was growing up we had seasonal work with the farms, few shops had delivery runs, is it cause kids are bored and don't have things to spend time on, or even if you gave them a rewarding outlet to keep em busy think it'd still happen in a ideal scenario?

(kind of) homeless, what can i do?
hi all. i would never usually make a post like this but i am genuinely struggling. i (M21) currently “live” with my mum (F51) and i don’t know what to do.
i have been living in a car (which i lost recently due to a crash) since august, and my household is toxic and drives my mental state worse.
for context, i am an AuDHD person, and my mum is my “full time carer” yet every time i ask for help (which is within reason, due to tasks i require a carer with) she always sighs and screams at me for it, i have been choosing to sleep in the car because, frankly, being around her drives my (already “at risk”) mental state worse.
she completely disregards my disabilities and gets angry at me for things beyond my control, and if i disagree with her or upset her, she screams at me, saying i am a “vile abusive manipulative narcissistic cunt”
today, i have tried to have a civil, calm conversation with her, in a public setting, and she went straight to giving me the silent treatment and even went as far as to scream at me in public, and rant about me to the poor cashier in the shop who was purely trying to do her job.
she also screamed at me in regards to my partner (F20) and said one of the reasons she doesn’t want her staying over is due to my partners religious beliefs, bear in mind we are the same religion. i told her that was discrimination and she told me i was
using “satanic manipulation tactics”
for extra context, i am currently under watch due to suicidal and self harming behaviour, which she blames my partner for, even though i have been engaging in these behaviours since 12 years old.
every time i try to have a civilised and respectful conversation about my emotions and feelings to her, she tells me i am a manipulative narcissist who is trying to use emotional blackmail against her. she has also been on rambles about how the whole family is against her and talking about her behind her back, and the only proof or source she has is because “she just knows it”
she refuses to seek any kind of psychological or emotional help and ever since i was a child she has engaged in this behavior.
when i was a child she had said she “hates liars” and told me that if i ever lied she would cut my tongue out and make me chew on soap.
whenever i had told the truth about my upbringing during therapy sessions, she would get extremely angry and say i was “making up lies so that she would look bad”
she very obviously has some kind of paranoid delusion disorder yet she refuses to seek help for it.
anyway, context over, i am unable to save enough due to her taking over half of my PIP payment as “rent” which for some reason is gone within a few days.
for added context, when i was first awarded PIP, i got backpaid, and received £3K, which i wanted to put into savings for a house, however, on her terms, i had sent her £1.5K, which was all gone by the next day.
she has a delusion in which she believes she will “get a big win” on the lottery, and i feel that i am indirectly funding that.
i tried to talk to her earlier about the potential of me lowering my payments so i can save towards my own place, and she straight away started saying i was a “financially abusive manipulative narcissist”
the last time i tried having a conversation about moving out, she screamed at me, saying PIP would “stop my money” even though it is not means tested.
nevertheless, whether i move out or not, i require a carer. what can i do about this, and how can i move out as soon as possible?
i fear that i will be trapped this way forever.

That brings me to my question: what are some of the best places to snorkel in the UK? Places that have diverse marine ecosystems?

Politics Why isn’t English Independence in England more popular when you consider the figures?
I was looking through the latest ONS figures comparing tax revenue and public expenditure across the four nations of the UK, and the differences are quite substantial.
Importantly, these figures INCLUDE North Sea oil and gas revenues, allocated geographically, meaning Scotland receives its estimated geographical share.
Revenue includes taxes and other public receipts, while spending includes expenditure attributed to each nation, including UK-wide costs.
Source: ONS – Country and Regional Public Sector Finances, 2024/25
England raises considerably more revenue relative to its spending than Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
At a time when the UK faces enormous government debt, rising debt-interest payments, strained public services and a high tax burden, I find myself wondering:
Why isn’t English independence a more popular political idea?
Could an independent England, retaining more control over the revenue it generates, have greater scope to balance its finances, reduce taxation, invest in public services and ultimately improve living standards for its citizens?
Or would the economic disruption, division of national debt and costs of separating the four nations outweigh the potential financial benefits?
Of course, the deficits above aren’t simply transfers paid for by England, and they don’t tell us what independence would cost. Nevertheless, the underlying figures seem worth discussing.
I’m genuinely interested in people’s thoughts, particularly from an economic rather than nationalist perspective.
