Discussion I made a free Anki deck of 5,400+ Traditional New Mexican Spanish words, every card source-cited

My family is Nuevomexicano, and I've been working on getting back to the Spanish my grandparents spoke. That's Traditional New Mexico Spanish, not the Spanish they teach in class. The flashcards I could find were all standard Spanish, so I made my own deck and I'm sharing it.

What's in it

  • 5,465 cards, one per word
  • Every card says exactly where the word came from, down to the page or dataset
  • Where it applies, the card also shows the standard Spanish equivalent (like cuidao for cuidado) and what kind of word it is: anglicism, phonetic variant, Mexicanism, local colloquialism, or Native American origin

Sources

  • Bills & Vigil, New Mexico and Colorado Spanish Survey (UNM): about 4,000 words that real speakers in northern NM and southern Colorado gave for everyday things. Each card also lists the other answers people gave for the same thing, so you can see how much the words vary from village to village.
  • Kercheville, A Preliminary Glossary of New Mexican Spanish (UNM Bulletin, 1934): about 1,300 entries
  • McSpadden (Chililí Spanish) and Enrique R. Lamadrid (Penitente cuadernos)

A few of my favorites: abridor (can opener), aceite de lámpara (kerosene), and grampador (clothespin). There are 15 or so other words people use for a clothespin, too.

Download: NM Spanish Anki deck (.apkg)

If you catch a mistake, or your family uses a word that isn't in here, please comment. I'd love to keep adding to it. ¡Que viva el español de Nuevo México!

Development AnkiDroid's New Note Editor (Feedback Wanted!)

Hi all, time for a sneak peek at my redesign for AnkiDroid's note editor.

Please send over any and all feedback and I'll get right on it. Right now this is pre-alpha functionality which I'm now working to tighten up and land (some of which should be in 2.26).

It uses the same code for the fields as Anki, so your notes will appear the same on both apps.

Aside from the visual preview of the HTML, it adds two new major pieces of functionality:

  • Quick actions: the buttons to the side of the fields are now customizable, so you can insert a drawing or image in a single tap
  • Customizable field toolbars: if you have an 'equation' or 'code' field, you can hide the 'record audio' button. This works on a preset level, similar to the deck options.
    • This also allows you to hide the default Anki formatting options.

Some existing functionality, such as keyboard language selection is now much more prominent.

This has taken a TON of time and effort to get right, but it's almost there, and I'm really excited to share this with y'all.

If you like where this is heading, please consider sponsoring my work. Your support helps me keep dedicating time to making AnkiDroid better for everyone:

Finally, THANK YOU to everyone in the AnkiDroid community who has already provided tons of guidance and feedback for this feature. It's 5x better than what I could have done working alone.

Resources I built an iOS app for sentence mining from any app straight into Anki.

Hi, I've been using Anki for several years and made thousands of cards already. However, making cards on the iOS platform, which is my favorite reading device, was definitely annoying, since I had to copy the sentence and switch between different apps. So I made this app.

How it works:
1. In any app, including Apple Books, Safari, or even a messaging app, select a sentence you come across and find necessary to collect.
2. Tap the Translate button in the option bar.
3. In the pop-up menu, select the word you want to look up, or see the translated sentence or context analysis to understand the sentence more thoroughly.
4. Tap Save to Anki after you confirm the preview of the card.
Finally, when several cards have been added, whenever you are ready, export the Anki .apkg package and share it with AnkiMobile. Enjoy your learning!

Pricing: Free for basic usage (no AI features), monthly $4.99 Plus or $8.99 Pro (AI and premium features) for covering server and AI costs. *ALL FREE during Testing Stage*
License: closed source. (We may open source it in the future)
Link: ankier.cano.xyz (works on iPhone and iPad)
Download: https://testflight.apple.com/join/FMysFfnv

It’s still early, so I’d really appreciate any feedback: what’s confusing, what’s missing, what breaks. Thanks!

Add-ons FocusForce V2: free add-on that locks Anki until your study goal is done

• Upvotes

FocusForce locks Anki until you reach a goal you set.

4 goals: a number of reviews, a number of correct answers, a timer, or finish today's due cards (all decks or one deck).

The lock: Anki stays on top and can't be minimized or closed. Stop early with your password, or choose Blind lock (no way out until the goal is done).

Also: home-screen widget, live counter while reviewing, stats calendar. Sessions resume after a crash.

Add-ons I made a cute Anki add-on to help me stay focused

Hey everyone!

Lately I've struggled to stay focused and finish my decks everyday. I finally found something that works for me and maybe it'll help you too.

HOW IT WORKS On screen is your Focus Friend and a timer. If the timer runs out before you click reveal, your buddy gets sad and you'll need to cheer them up by reviewing 5 cards before they are okay again.

You are not punished for not knowing a card. Only for not staying focused. (unless you choose hardcore mode, you maniacs. You can also turn the timer off to relax and just hang out with your buddy.)

You can move the buddy and timer to anywhere you want on the screen and it remembers that for each deck. Occasionally your study buddy will say messages complimenting you or encouraging you or just being snarky.

If you move to another app during your review and get distracted while a card is up, the timer will run out and they become sad.

But the way I've been using it is: if it's a card I think I should know, I'll give myself the full 10 seconds to try and recall and if I can't, I let the timer run out. It motivates me to keep going quickly to make them okay again. If it’s a really new card I’ll reveal it before waiting for the timer to run out in order to save time. You’ll know when to wait and think versus when to advance in order to learn.

You can change the character, timer length, appearance of the timer window, character/messages/timer window sizes, recovery behavior, and all sorts of things in the settings.

This is my first add-on so I hope it works well for everyone.

Add-ons Can I use the Customize Keyboard Shortcuts add-on to make the Command⌘ key my button to flip cards?

This would maximize the ergonomics of Anki on the Macbook. I know I can map actual keys like period, comma, letters, etc. to this, but I always wanted to map command and only that one button to flip cards. I think the problem is that pressing Command/Ctrl doesn't actual trigger an event in the macbook/system, which means that it wouldn't be possible, but I was wondering if it was.

Question Replacement for Google Sheets to Anki add-on?

Hi hi. I was using Anki for my language vocab cards, but adding new words to a synced list in Google Sheets. I was using the add-on Google Sheets to Anki, which no longer works following the update. So, now I'm looking for a replacement or suggestions for an improved workflow.

Has anyone used Google Sheets for Languages - Two-way Sync? Or have other ideas? I don't need anything complicated (i.e., my cards don't need AI, images, audio, gamification, color coding, etc, etc.).

Add-ons I made a add-on that lets you format cards during review (Notion-style toolbar) — PopEdit V2

Tired of pressing E just to bold one word mid-review? I made PopEdit: select text on a card, and a small toolbar pops up. One click and it's saved in your note.

- Bold, italic, underline, strike, x², x₂

- Text colors + night-mode-friendly highlights

- Copy / search in Browser

- Ctrl+Z undo, customizable buttons

Question What happens if I manually set due date?

I like to have Sundays off but that creates a backlog. I HATE seeing that.

So I'd like to manually change due date to distribute cards over the next 6 days. Is there a catch or is this a solid strategy?

  1. Select all overdue cards
  2. set due date
  3. 1-6
  4. Now the cards will be evenly distributed mon-sat

Question Exams and quizes

Post image
27 Upvotes

I have been using anki ever since the start of this semester and rn the midfinals are closing in and I am getting quite a few quizzes here and there.

Is there a way to use my decks to study for a midfinal or a quiz or should I just stop solving my flashcards throughout the period of midfinals?

Add-ons Memory Forest 1.3.0: a study heatmap

Memory Forest is my add-on that grows a pixel-art forest from your study history. Version 1.3.0 adds a study heatmap under it.

The forest shows how much you've learned over time, but not your individual days: one study day grows many trees at once. A heatmap gives every day its own square, so, like a lot of people, I kept Review Heatmap installed next to it. I wanted a heatmap that matches the forest, and that fixes the things I kept missing in the existing ones.

Before building it, I went through Review Heatmap's open GitHub issues and AnkiWeb reviews, a bunch of other heatmap add-ons, and posts here on Reddit, and made a list of what people complained about and what they liked, so the heatmap is based on that.

  • Fair Streaks - the most common complaint was about losing a long streak unfairly. I tackled this by introducing two features.
    • A day with no cards due doesn't break your streak (this is useful for decks you "finished" and only see one card every few months).
    • The ability to only count 5 or 6 days a week towards your streak - this is more fair for people who only study during workdays and want to still keep their streak (by default every day counts).
  • Shade by reviews, study time or answer speed - review count alone doesn't show a day spent on hard cards. I wanted the heatmap to answer these questions:
    • "how much did I study?" - shade by review.
    • "how long did I study?" - shade by time.
    • "how efficient did I study?" - shade by median answering time (e.g. I normally study slower if I don't sleep enough). I've tried other metrics like different FSRS metrics or basic ones like how many 'again' I've hit, but I felt like this produces the most useful metric.
  • A heatmap that matches your forest scenery
    • I wanted the heatmap to fit with the rest of the forest, and as I keep rotating between different sceneries, I couldn't really achieve that with the existing heatmap easily.
    • I also wanted the colors of the heatmap to be evenly spaced out and easy to tell apart. The forest heatmap supports 4 shades, each one unique enough to be easily distinguishable (compared with 10 shades in other heatmaps).
    • I wanted unique tile patterns and not simple squares to keep it refreshing.
    • This is also customizable in the settings, so you can choose your own palette.
  • Mark exams and other important dates - My biggest missing feature was marking important exam days, so that's been added as well.

Some other quality-of-life features

  • Your streaks, next streak flag, and a one-click button to switch between yearly/timeline views or reviews/time/pace shade appear on hover (I didn't want to keep the default view too messy).
  • Week start follows your system settings (this can also be changed manually).
  • The heatmap (and forest) show up on your congratulations screen as well (this can be disabled in the settings).
  • A one-click button to expand the heatmap to show all the years your current streak covers (If you've just lost a streak, this also shows the previous streak).
  • Hover over a month or a year to see how much you studied that month or year.
  • Clicking on a day opens the browser sorted by number of reviews/time spent (depending on what you shade by).

Question How much cards per lecture is too much?

I got 700 cards for 4 chapters for an anatomy exam.
Though these cards are very easy clozes (10s max usually). I do about 100-200 reviews a day.
I do include very easy info sometimes just to help me remember it just in case.
Just wondering if it's the right spot or not.

Question Onigiri Update

I was wondering if there was a way to revert my Onirigi to the old version, as I currently dislike the current one, especially since I can't change the sidebar to an image that isn't my background 🥲. As I was fiddling around with the controls I put on the "sakura" theme in hopes of changing the text colour, but now my homepage is an eyesore. This just demotivated me to do my flashcards lol, so I would really appreciate any insights.

Experiences DON'T DOWNLOAD LANGUAGE DECKS THAT HAVE MORE THAN 2K WORDS!

Post image
0 Upvotes

hello. i am currently learning french, and after completing the famous 5000 most frequently used french words, PLEASE DON'T COMPLETE ALL OF YOUR CARDS! now, this doesn't mean that you shouldn't stop using them, but if you already have a 2k+ word language deck, you can delete the cards that have a frequency index higher than 2k. (most of the decks should have) 2k words is literally more than enough!! you don't need to know all the words, right? and worse, if you don't immerse, THEN ANKI WILL HAVE ALMOST ZERO EFFECT ON YOUR LANGUAGE JOURNEY!! when you see a word that you have in your deck in the wild, look it up. this might seem stupid, but you will get an "oh, i know this card!" momment. after you encounter it, you should remember what it means effortlessly. well, that's all i gotta say, so see ya. ✌️

Discussion My Story about falling in love with Anki

Please check out my Substack post: Anki/Spaced Repetition - How I started winning pub trivia

Just about how Anki has changed my life and has allowed my pub trivia team to become the consistent highest performers.

Not trying to make any money off of this, just wanted to share this with people who hopefully share my excitement and love for spaced repetition.

If you have any feedback on my writing, please let me know, I would like to be a more active member in this community and any feedback that might help me have a better effect here would be much appreciated.

Also, if you guys have any decks that really helped you with your trivia performance I would love if you could drop them here for me <3

Thanks :)

PSA: Obligatory no AI used, but you could probs tell from my somewhat shitty writing lol.

Question Single English word answer with Yomitan

Hi!

I just set up Yomitan and was getting ready to mine some words but I have trouble getting it as I want it.

All I want is a way to add the English meaning of a word, or even a few meanings as the back of a reversible card. But in all the different alternatives I can select in Yomitan (Glossary, Glossary-First, Glossary-Brief and so on) I get a load of example sentences and other info that I don't want. I'm sure it's useful but I'm a simple man and I want to keep things simple for my brain. So for example if one side says "読む" I want the other side to say "to read" (or, I would accept if it adds a few more meanings) but I don't care that it's a go-dan transitive verb and I most of all don't want example sentences that spoil the meaning when the card is reversed.

Is this possible, and if so, how?

Thanks
