Discussion If You're Joining the Army, Anki is a Winning Strategy!

Hello everyone,

just wanted to post that if you're joining (at least the Army) and seeking MOS (your job) qualification, pre-studying the program using Anki is a winning strategy!

I enlisted and didn't have my EMT license for the 68W (Combat Medic) program, so I DL'd some common EMT licensing decks and indexed some high yield cards and passed it on the first time.

Army education programs are... uhhh.... terrible... but I did everything but kick my feet up on the desk, both in the civilian training segment and the military segment and did really well! (Also god help you if you don't qualify in your MOS, you'll be a cook and that's 💀)

Out of my company of ~400 people, more than 200 recycled (had to move all their stuff (WAY worse than it sounds) to another company to try again).

I was overly paranoid and studied to paramedic level civilian side and did way too much prep military side decks (a lot of low yield cards like fieldcraft), so that helped a bit. Here was my cardload before I shipped to basic.

It should generalize to other medical MOS's and other really hard schoolhouses (they don't give you ANY time at all to learn really and its super intense).

Development Built an Anki client for BB10 — syncs perfectly with AnkiWeb if anyone else is still using one of these

Hey everyone,

I've been using a BlackBerry 10 as my daily driver, and one thing I really wanted was a way to study Anki flashcards on it and the problem was that every existing AnkiDroid release crashes on BB10 the app was never built with Android 4.3 (API 18) in mind, and modern Anki's database format (Schema 18) didn't exist back then.

So I built one from scratch. Honestly I've been having a lot of fun lately just building the apps I need to make this phone actually usable — this one took the longest but also ended up being the most satisfying.

What it does:

  • Fully works on BlackBerry 10 phones (tested on Q5, Android API 18, 720×720 display)
  • Two-way sync with AnkiWeb — study on your phone, open Anki on your PC and it's already up to date, and vice versa
  • Supports modern Anki's Schema 18 database format (the same format Anki Desktop 24+ uses)
  • Full FSRS support — memory states (stability, difficulty, etc.) are written in the exact format Anki Desktop and AnkiWeb expect, so FSRS scheduling works correctly across devices
  • Deck counters sync properly — if you finish your 30 new cards on the BlackBerry, your PC shows New: 0, not 30
  • All your deck options (new cards/day, learning steps, review limits, FSRS retention %) set on your PC are automatically applied on the phone after syncing
  • Physical keyboard shortcuts for answering cards (1/2/3/4)
  • Force Upload / Force Download buttons in case sync gets stuck

Download / Source: 👉 github.com/warumpas-ops/ankidroid-bb10

The APK is attached to the latest release. If you're on a BB10 device and want to run Anki, give it a shot. Happy to answer questions!

Experiences TTS ON UR CARDS IS SO GOOD

my biggest barrier when doing my cards was lacking the endurance to read hundreds of cards in a single session. It'd feel soooooo cognitively demanding by the end of it and id be absolutely fried. Today i tried using tts with my cards and WOW, I could do my cards with my eyes closed (literally).

10/10 would recommend

Other You can use CSS and HTML to style your cards. In case you didn't know.

You can make them look any way you want. And you can let AI write it for you if you don't know how.

Solved Comment est déterminée la Due Date ?

Bonjour !!

Question Anki is not opening on my Windows 11 PC. Could Smart App Control be the issue?

I am having a trouble launching Anki on my Windows 11 PC. I get this error when I open it:

An unexpected error occurred.

ImportError: DLL load failed while importing QtWidgets:

An Application Control policy has blocked this file.

I've already restarted my PC and reinstalled Anki, but the same error persists. And there's no Anki-specific block in Windows Protection History. I don't want to disable Smart App Control because I'm concerned I might not be able to re-enable it afterward. Has anyone encountered this issue or found a workaround that allows Anki to run while keeping Smart App Control enabled? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Question Anki on mobile

For the ones who use Anki on mobile (IOS or Android). I'd love to know the reasons why.

Is it simply because it's more convenient than open a computer each time, you don't have a computer ? You want to use Anki any time in a day (so on mobile) ?

Isn't it unconvenient ? What do you think about it ?

Discussion I'm planning the next update for my Anki add-on, Flux — what features would you like to see?

Hi everyone!

I'm planning the next update for Flux, my Anki add-on, and I'd like to make it more useful for everyday studying.

I want to improve the add-on based on real user needs rather than adding features nobody actually uses.

What would you like to see in the next update?

- 📊 Better statistics and progress tracking

- 🎯 Improved retention and study performance insights

- 🔍 A clearer dashboard to identify weaknesses

- ⚡ A cleaner interface and smoother workflow

- 💡 New features you think Anki is missing

I'm especially interested in hearing about problems you face when reviewing cards and tracking your long-term progress.

If you could add one feature to Flux, what would it be, and why?

I'm open to suggestions, criticism, and feature requests. Thanks for helping me improve it!

Question how to use onigiri with memory forest

basically i want to use both but im not sure if it would work. memory forest in my opinion is like the better version of the review heatmap (the old one is still good and i still have both) but memory forest is literally the perfect mix of aesthetics, personalization and visualizing growth

onigiri is also great, makes the ui really nice and its also really aesthetic. does anyone know if it is possible to use them both at the same time.

Add-ons Adaptive Speed Focus Mode

An auto-reveal timer that adapts to length, difficulty, card status and more!

Many of you will have used Glutanimate's Speed Focus Mode before. It always bothered me that for the shorter cards, the timer was too long, and for longer cards too short!
So I started tinkering and fiddling with a number of variables to predict how long each card would take me creating an algorithm to push me to complete my cards efficiently, whilst allowing time to actually read and interpret the card.

Variables include:

  • Card length - longer cards take longer to read
  • Card difficulty - difficult cards may take longer (interestingly, difficulty has almost no effect on my time to flip a card)
  • Answer length - longer answers need more time
  • New/Learning/Review - new cards may need more time, I have it off for new cards so that I can learn them properly.
  • IOs and one-by-ones - get detected automatically, and timed differently
  • More to come as I record and analyse my reviews

Variables are weighted by importance before they enter an algorithm for each card, as it presents, that spits out a timer. Fully customisable with a live preview.

Calibrate - one click on startup suggests times by sampling your own review history.

Learn my pace - records your real times and variables, allowing calibrate to become more accurate the more reviews you do and Auto-tune nudges your timer up or down mid-session based on your real times, adjusting to slow or fast days. Off by default, everything is recorded locally only.

Also - Specific note types or decks can be excluded from being timed, similar to original SFM, it has a warning sound and a "More time" shortcut.

The demo above features exaggerated timing to better show off the features, the defaults are gentler.

AnkiWeb: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1148593203
Github: https://github.com/FleggaBDog69/aSFM

Needless to say, this is based on the original Speed Focus Mode by Glutanimate, licensed under AGPLv3.

Feedback more than welcome, would love to see how others settings compare.

Discussion What is your method of "recalling"? Am I alien from always starting from scratch?

Curious to know. How do you process a card within <10 seconds, actually? Don't you have to recall what the facts are and how they connect? Reading them takes a couple of seconds but connecting them takes a couple more seconds. Like for example (from the post - Adaptive Speed Focus Mode : r/Anki)

You have to process that the smoker is 67 years old.

You have to process the pain is located in the chest and radiates to the jaw.

You have to process the ECG shows ST elevation in 3 leads - II, III, and aVF.

And then the ultimate question - which coronary artery is most likely occluded? You'd have to picture all the coronary arteries and then respond accordingly (i.e., "Hmm circumflex is here... LAD is here...")

You can also process that there are edge cases and the what ifs.

Am I actually tripping or do yall process all this information within <10 seconds before answering and AFTER reading? Like how is that possible. I'd take ~15 seconds here.

How does memory recollection actually work. Is it read -> immediate answer = abc? Or is it read -> recall thought process, visuals, conceptual understanding, and edge cases from scratch -> answer = abc?

The way I do it to retain information while continuously ensuring I understand, is via "read -> recall from scratch -> answer = abc" route. Is this genuinely alien.

[EDIT: Ok I found the key term for this - system 2 vs system 1 thinking. The way I think is basically always on system 2, as that's how I recall and learn information.]

Discussion How do you track travel phrases across multiple languages without mixing them?

I'm trying to keep a single Anki deck for phrases I actually hear while traveling, but now that I'm adding words from two different languages I keep mixing up the cards. Some phrases sound similar enough that my reviews go sideways. I thought about using tags for the country or trip, but then reviews get scattered if I don't filter right. Have you found a better setup that keeps languages separate while still letting me study phrases that come up on the road? Right now I'm on AnkiDroid and the card layout feels clunky when I want to add quick notes about where I picked something up.

Question Fixing Inability to Use Vulkan or Direct3d?

Hi there,

New Medschool Anki power user adapting to the large Anking decks.

I've noticed a big hit with added lag after downloading these huge decks and probably the syncing addition with Ankihub doesn't help.

I've tried a few things to improve performance like turning on minimalism but one thing I'd like to do is switch to Vulkan which I believe is the GPU driver? I'm running a 9070 XT GPU so it should be well beefy enough to tackle the Anki software. I'd love for the cards to be instantaneous but right now they are lagging behind 1-2 seconds with large images attached.

Unfortunately, I cannot seem to successfully switch to vulkan. Restarting Anki shows up with a full black screen for the program and a popup that states the switch to vulkan could not be performed, emergency default back to the previous driver software. The same issue occurs with Direct3d.

Really not sure where to go from here. I tried searching online but everyone else seems to have successfully switched, not sure why I'm getting crashing errors. Any technical assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Add-ons Created an MCP for your AI agent to create cards for you so that you can focus on learning

Hi! I started getting back into using Anki and I realized that it takes a lot of time to create cards and it takes away from actually studying the cards. I'm big on using AI to learn and I've been using codex (you can use claude code or any other agentic harness as well), and I found that it lacked in terms of creating cards / managing them for me since it'd have to take control of my screen to manually do it.

I made an Anki Agent MCP here so that it allows your codex / claude code to directly use Anki for you and create cards on your behalf - to install it, just paste in the GitHub repo link into your agent and ask it to create cards for you with an attached lecture / pdf / resource.

For me personally, instead of spending time creating cards now, I can just go through the material on my own and then test myself afterwards with the generated cards :D

It's quite an early version 1 and not on AnkiWeb yet so I'm quite open to feedback!
