Discussion Do you color for process or process?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I’m coloring while my kid colors and it’s switching how I see my hobby! Usually I’m a ‘product’ hobbyist, when I knit, it’s because I have a specific sweater I want to wear, when I read I am a completionist who almost always finishes the book, when I bake it’s because I want to eat (or share) X item.

But I have a 4 year old, and I grabbed a color by number book to work on while he colors, and I’ve started to color for the sake of coloring. No pressure, no real goal with the finished product, just create. And I’m having fun!  It got me thinking though, especially with the rise of Social Media, do you create as a process, or to have a very cool finished picture?

Photo for attention!

MARKERS Pinterest challenge!

Saw a challenge where you draw the first photo on Pinterest when you search: pose, facial expression, hair, hat, outfit, shoes, color palette.

It's a fun challenge when you don't know what to draw!

Discussion Picking color palettes

How do you all pick color palettes? I’m pretty new to color theory so I need some resources to help get started. Do you use free stuff like Pinterest, cheap stuff like Ohuhu palettes on Etsy, or more expensive products like color palette books or the color cube? I mainly use Ohuhu alcohol markers.

I just got myself Ohuhu Honolulu brush markers and Ohuhu Ulu acrylic markers and had to do a few pages. I haven't coloured in about a year so I have been non-stop in my supplies lol. I will probably keep finishing more pages and I want to try some of these techniques I've been seeing online! I tried my hand at the ghost effect but I'd like to do it much better than I have yet. First page was inspired by a popular video game, whoever gets it gets an upvote from me lol

Work in Progress 2/4 Glowing

I thought stained glass would be fun butttt I’m not really getting the ‘glowing’ vibe I was going for, because I was coloring on white paper. Next time I’ll try neon or maybe a glowstick?

I’d still love recommendations for cracked and liquid please!

My first Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou page in Circle of Life. I has just got some new inktense pencils and kalour pencils for my birthday so i played about with them a little bit on this page. When i first started it out i was gonna do the background purple and orange but then i got scared to commit to the purple so i just left it pink. Its a bit of a vibe even tho it is VERY pink🤣 if i knew i was gonna change my mind i wouldnt have done so much reds and pinks in the plants🙈

Finished this last week. 90% was done with Crayola pencils 50 pack. 5% with Prisma Scholar pencils and 5% with water-based markers from the dollar store. The page is from a dollar store colouring book as well. You don't have to spend alot to be creative. 😊

This time I went for a much much simpler page. I was quite intimidated but these gigantic objects but I really enjoyed colouring it. It also went very fast. The background didn’t blend as well as I was hoping, so something definitely to work on. I tried to save it but I think I just made it worse 😅. I also didn’t know what to do with those squiggly things, so I just added some glitter over them. It’s not really visible on the picture though.

Social Saturday Warm Fuzzies

Can I just say how heartwarming it is that grown adults post their artwork on here and ask us for our opinion? My opinion will always be GREAT JOB because most people post things they are proud of and I want that feeling to go on longer for these people. It also makes me feel good to give kudos to all you artists! Color on! Share away!

Completed First post/New-ish to coloring

Hi all.
I used to love coloring/doodling as a kid/teenager. I got older and did it less and less. I lost my mom to complications from Parkinson’s/a stroketwo years ago, and she loved to color, she never quit till the very end. She told me it took her mind off things. The reason I mention this is because I somehow landed on color tok and saw this coco wyo book. I thought to myself that my mom would have loved having this. I wound up eventually collecting an adequate amount of markers, watched tutorials, practiced and then finally ordered the book. I did the first page today. In a way, I feel close to my mom doing this, as cheesy as it sounds. I’m really happy with how it turned out. I do have one question if anyone could help me. I used a white gelly roll pen to draw in the ghosts on the quilt but it didn’t quite create the solid pattern I hoped for. What can I do for a better result next time? I think it’s safe to say I am hooked on coloring again :)

Advice Wanted Which technique to finish this?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I can't decide whether I want this to be monochromatic or...? All colours I've used are on the Cyan colour range and I'm not sure if I should fill the page with blue-green tones or not.

I did water ripples and aurora borealis for the first time already, I'm feeling intimidated to finish it. I have Ohuhu alcohol markers, Ohuhu acrylic markers, and some pencil crayons at my reach. I am very much a "chaos/dopamine" colorist so I don't normally do challenges...but I do want to challenge myself. Thoughts, opinions, advice?

Feedback Wanted How to learn shadows and highlights??

Post image
3 Upvotes

So far, I’ve only been able to successfully color things by copying other people’s choices in shadows and highlights. I do try to imagine where the light is coming from, but it’s not always obvious to me where the shadows will fall. I especially love those coloring pages where people only use two or three colors. Any place to specifically work on that technique?

Here’s my 2nd completed page, using someone else’s version as a reference 😬

What do we think? I was pretty proud of it but then I see everyone else’s work and I’m like…. Mine is not that great.
