✔️ APPROVED AMA AMA: Clearing, Open Days, UCAS applications, and more (mod approved)

Hello! We're from Birmingham Newman University - and we're here to answer all your questions about uni 👀

Why should you listen to us? Well, we're a small uni in Birmingham, with a big commitment to our students - we've come top in the National Student Survey 2026 for overall student satisfaction, top in the Daily Mail's Uni Guide 2026 for teaching excellence, student experience, and student support, and we're The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Social Inclusion 2026. But enough about us...

We want to talk about you.

From 09:00 BST today (Tuesday 18 August 2026), we'll have Lucy and Keith from our Content team - as well as some of our amazing Admissions and Student Recruitment team in the background - to answer your questions.

ETA: We'll now be picking up questions over the next week!

So, what do you want to know:

  • how does Clearing work? (because yes, there are still great options available!)
  • what should you be thinking about on a uni Open Day? (hint: it's not necessarily about the freebies)
  • what do we actually look for in UCAS applications? (because each one is reviewed by humans)
  • how does enrolment work? (it's actually surprisingly easy)

or something else. Either way, we're excited to chat 💙

💬 DISCUSSION My teacher is Tony Blair’s son

Well, he used to be my teacher last year during GCSEs. I never clocked that he was Tony Blair’s son until I actually searched it up. I always thought politicians’ children were living lavish, but he works at a state school for secondary and goes to the corner shop. He acts a bit weird but maybe it’s something to do with his upbringing. I wouldn’t bat an eye if they were the son of an MP, but surely a former Prime Ministers’ son in their 20s would be doing something entirely different. I don’t know maybe he’s like those princes who want to live a normal life. At the end of the day, it’s none of my business but whenever I hear of the effects of Tony Blair’s actions I always deep that his son literally goes to my school

💬 DISCUSSION TMUA REGRET

If only I slept better I couldnt even sleep the night before...I came out of the exam thinking I got 4 wrong because I guessed 4 and was pretty happy...then was in the toilet when I got home and just remembered I got 2 more wrong because of silly mistakes like forgetting u cant divide by 0 and the other one i continued a calculation thinking 2 squared was 2 and got the completely wrong answer. Another one I got a cubic graph and wrote the wrong inequality it so foolishly. Mainly paper 1 mistakes but paper 2 probably went similar missing edge cases.

I go online and see people who got my questions get COMPLETELY different (and correct) answers. I was hoping for at least 30/40 but that dreams out the window because I got 8 or so GUARANTEED wrong and who knows how many other mistakes. Simply misreading the question or messing up at the start cost me SO MANY marks

I dont even know what to do man I applied Cambridge for maths too and imperial as well. Just messed up cos of a few mistakes in one exam :(

🎓 UNI / UCAS How much does oxford *really* contextualise you?

I'm applying to read geography at oxford (number one choice) for 2027 and I truly just feel so far behind because I have never/will never get the opportunities that others have to help me

The only thing that would maybe even give me a chance of getting in would be if they put me against the context of my family/finances, school, and postcode

I understand that universities can send out contextual offers and stuff like that, but considering that its Oxford of all places, and that I would first need to get shortlisted for interview, I just don't see myself having much chance unless Oxford did contextualise me a lot

I am just wondering how much they would really care about my context, or if someone like me from my background is just destined to never get in because of my own circumstances. Late night overthinking haha

🎓 UNI / UCAS Super Fast Response from Universities

Post image

My school submitted my application on 15/10 as I was doing early entry for Oxford and I got this the day after.

Is it normal to get a response from a university this quickly?!

🎓 UNI / UCAS My thoughts on uni as someone who doesn’t want to go to uni

Well… today I visited a university open day. It was my local uni, an RG. Drove down and parked without a problem, but decided that I will never enter the lane that changes from down to up ever again it was scary as hell.

The university itself is actually quite pretty, lots of trees and greenery and the buildings had a bit of a dark academia vibe which I quite liked. It was the perfect balance of dark academia and bright, green, open spaces. It also smells musty but I suppose some may appreciate that more than others. The student ambassadors were really friendly and knew where everything was considering I didn’t have a clue. The main building is huge and I got lost just trying to find a lecture theatre. Lots of stairs and lots of narrow corridors.

The student union building was surprisingly modern considering the rest of the buildings weren’t. Very bright and airy and colourful. And surprisingly colourful and comfortable chairs. The lecture theatre the welcome talk was in was huge, genuinely massive. I think it I had sat up the top I would’ve got vertigo or something it was that steep😭 I visited some more of the lecture theatres and had a look at some classroom/seminar rooms and they were also quite dark academia vibes. The campus itself is beautiful and it was a nice day so that made it better of course.

I paid visits to my chosen subjects at their respective stalls among the throngs of people gathering at the medicine stall in their desperation to try out CPR on a dummy, you do you I guess, especially the one that said “I don’t even want to do medicine, I want to do law but I want a go of that dummy thing there.”🤷‍♀️

I was quite disappointed that geography wasn’t as similar as I thought it would be to A Level but that’s alright I suppose. I picked up a prospectus or two for both human and physical geography because they’re in totally different buildings🤯 Human geography is in social sciences and physical geography is in Earth sciences. I wanted to have a look at the history building but when I got there there was no sign of anyone, no student ambassadors or professors or even a table that said “History”, the building looked like it was abandoned because it was completely empty..

There was a Greggs right outside the SU which I quite like tbh I like a good Greggs every so often. Southern fried chicken baguette for the win 💪🏻 Everything was very close together, apart from the accom but I suppose nobody minds.

The accom however, I found quite disappointing. The rooms were very small, and I don’t mean smaller than what I’m used to but there was just enough room to shuffle between the bed and the desk. There was also no shower head in the room that apparently a student lives in???? The kitchen was also very small, I can only assume its because it was a flat of four, maybe they’re bigger in flats of 6 or more. It also felt really constricted, it didn’t feel like the community everyone raves about🫤

I think the visit to the university really just solidified my feelings about uni and my future and although I’m still applying I’m going to give it a proper think but while I was walking around, there was just this feeling in the pit of my stomach that I know I wouldn’t be happy here. Seeing everyone bounding around the stalls and to lectures made me realise that I feel vastly different to everyone else and it does make me feel a bit down I suppose. I would love to experience student life and halls and clubbing but I really don’t think that I’d cope, not now anyways. I suppose it’s only a train ride away if I want to do it but I want to meet new people and branch out a bit. I was scrolling through a list of the societies at the uni and thinking about which ones I would join and there were so many I know are just lots of fun. I know the “great separation” is fast approaching and all my friends want to head in different directions with their lives (uni, apprenticeship, job, nothing.) I just don’t think I’m ready to give up what I have at home, it feels as if my life has moved so slowly for the first 16 years of my life and too quickly for the last two years as I only really started having a social life in Year 11 after I found my forever bunch of friends. I’m not worried about them, they’re going to do great and I genuinely believe that they will be the successful people they want to be.

This is not to say I don’t have ambitions of my own, I do. I want to live in a nice house in the city with a cat and make enough money in my job that I genuinely enjoy so that I can afford to travel. Maybe a boyfriend who knows🤷‍♀️ It’s almost like being told you’re going on your dream luxury holiday but you don’t know how you’re going to get there be it plane or bicycle.

I suppose it’s really got me to kick my arse into gear because there’s no point in doing nothing next September. Sure the job markets shit around here and all Indeed suggests to me is the army, uber eats, or “teach English in China” I’m going to have to sort something out. I know many people, especially older ones scream about apprenticeships but it’s a bit hard when the only ones within a 50 mile radius are engineering or hair and beauty and then all the rest of the results are over the complete opposite end of the country.

In conclusion, no Doris, I am not going to university.

OTHER I'm scared I won't make friends.

At the moment I'm on my last year of gcses so I'll be going to a 6th form college next year and I'm scared I won't make any friends. I feel like I'm wasting my teen years as I have nobody to be friends with. All I have is some friends who only ever message me but never want to call or hang out.

Can people tell me if they managed to make friends in college as I don't think I'll be able to take isolation for another 2 years.

🙏 I WANT HELP Social anxiety

I've been really struggling to make friends recently. I'm about a month deep into UK 6th form (I'm 16) and I find it really hard to just approach people, more so people my age, I'm kind of okay with adults, still not 100% tho.

I asked one of my friends who makes friends rlly easily, how she manages to do so, and she gave me some great advice, stuff that I'll remember for a while, but the thing I just can't do is approach people. It's all well and good giving me this info and advice but I just can't do anything with it. Even if a person is sitting alone, I wouldn't be able to approach them.

Do you think it's a good idea to ask my friend to do some of said advice with me? Like, ask her to come with me while we or just one of us approaches another person?

Or could I perhaps ask her to demonstrate while I watch from a distance, so I can see how she does it and how the other person acts? I kind of think this would help me, being able to see it in real time and for me to see that it's really not that bad.

I've said something similar about my situation before on a similar subreddit, but no one commented, and that really wasn't helpful.

🙏 I WANT HELP Am I Cooked 💀

So basically I haven't really been integrating into sixth form well, so I've just been focusing on my a levels which was working (or so I thought 💀). I've mainly been talking to one teacher at lunch and asking them questions about the content but I think that it's been so frequent that I've accidentally annoyed the shit out of them because every time I ask them something now they genuinely just look at me in disgust😭

I'm not gonna annoy them any further but was just wondering if this would affect anything official (like my PAGs being assessed, UCAS reference that kind of stuff)

🙏 I WANT HELP Getting into top schools with just books & normal hobbies

Hey everyone, International student here. I am finalizing my choices for Economics at UCL, Imperial, Durham, and Warwick. Looking through everyone I know it feels like you need to be an International Math Olympiad winner or have made independent research just to get a chance.

I don't have those hyper rigour activities. My application relies entirely on genuine interest like reading, online lectures, and totally normal everyday activities.

To anyone who actually got an offer from these top-tier unis without crazy elite fluff. How did you write your academic paragraphs?

Also if you are willing to send ps of your past successful application please do so🙏🙏 it would be really nice.

🎓 UNI / UCAS Cambridge extra personal statement help

So I'm applying to Cambridge, hoping to specialise in mechanical engineering, which is the course I have applied for at my 4 other choices (Imperial, Bristol, Warwick and Southampton). I see online that quite a few people choose not to use the extra personal statement in the My Cambridge Application, however I think doing it will benefit me. I was hoping someone could give me advice on what to actual write/talk about on it?? Any help would be massively appreciated 💙🙏

I’m relatively happy w my choices, maths, fm , physics ,econ (I’ll drop to3 subjects) but I’m doubting my choices as idk what I want for my future wherever it be computing or engineering or a teacher, and apparently if I do maths physics fm it’s too niche and If I do maths physics econ that econ is useless and I should’ve done chem but ik I don’t want the medical sector. Also I have regrets of choosing econ over geog which I liked or psy which is apparently easier and also interesting to me however I am starting to enjoy econ so I’m unsure.
