βœ”οΈ APPROVED AMA AMA: Clearing, Open Days, UCAS applications, and more (mod approved)

Hello! We're from Birmingham Newman University - and we're here to answer all your questions about uni πŸ‘€

Why should you listen to us? Well, we're a small uni in Birmingham, with a big commitment to our students - we've come top in the National Student Survey 2026 for overall student satisfaction, top in the Daily Mail's Uni Guide 2026 for teaching excellence, student experience, and student support, and we're The Times and Sunday Times University of the Year for Social Inclusion 2026. But enough about us...

We want to talk about you.

From 09:00 BST today (Tuesday 18 August 2026), we'll have Lucy and Keith from our Content team - as well as some of our amazing Admissions and Student Recruitment team in the background - to answer your questions.

ETA: We'll now be picking up questions over the next week!

So, what do you want to know:

  • how does Clearing work? (because yes, there are still great options available!)
  • what should you be thinking about on a uni Open Day? (hint: it's not necessarily about the freebies)
  • what do we actually look for in UCAS applications? (because each one is reviewed by humans)
  • how does enrolment work? (it's actually surprisingly easy)

or something else. Either way, we're excited to chat πŸ’™

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS Late application post!

Post image
11 Upvotes

Idk why but apparently the Oxford Law course wasn’t showing up in this uniscout thing beforehand

Hopefully I could get at least 3 or 4/5

Through Jindal Method I apparently got 30-34 in my lnat… a bit disappointed, because I was thinking about 35/36, but hopefully it wouldn’t impair my chances that much.

Subject choices are Maths (achieved), bio, chem , history and English literature (predicted)

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS UCAS Applications 2027. What are my chances for these unis/courses? Anyone else applying for similar?

Post image
β€’ Upvotes

Hi guys,

as shown in the photo I have submitted my application to UCAS. My grades meet UCL and Warwick and exceed the rest (AAA for Bristol & Bath, AAB for Exeter). My GCSEs are as shown (8 in mathematics) but they are slightly low relatively to the rest of my cohort, which is at a very high attaining school.

Can anyone tell me what sort of chance I have? And if anyone is/has applied for similar, feel free to DM me!

πŸ’¬ DISCUSSION warning: this post discusses race and potentially other sensitive topic

β€’ Upvotes

does anyone have a study suggesting that people of color are more likely to get lower alvl predicted grades than others? it was pretty intuitive to think about since teachers are likely to be biased even if they dont realize it but alvl results are strictly graded without any bg checks and examiners dont know the names of the students etc, i just couldnt find a study saying that

edit: as some have pointed out ive over generalized by saying teachers are biased even if they dont realize it, i found this info on yt however i may have suggested every/most teachers are like this and i realized i have a weak understanding of how predicted grades work in general, if you want i can look for some studies suggesting this bias but just know not all teachers are like this

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS Current Y12s - do you know about Cambridge's Foundation Year?

β€’ Upvotes

Wanted to put out a post on this as it's still relatively recent and I think many MANY people aren't aware that it exists or that they are eligible!

Cambridge University offers a foundation year for those interested in studying arts, humanities or social sciences and who meet certain eligibility criteria.

Below is some info, but feel free to leave comments if you would like to know more and I'll do my best!

Grade requirements: 120 UCAS points (BBB equivalent), this can be through A-levels, BTECs etc

Courses you can study: after completing the foundation year, you can go on to study the following Cambridge undergraduate courses - english, law, history, HSPS, history and politics, education, theology, MML, music, philosophy, linguistics, archaeology, ASNAC, Asian and middle Eastern studies, classics, and environment, law and economics (which used to be land ec)

Eligibility requirements: this is a summary of the main eligibility requirements - care-experienced, refugee, asylum seeker, currently eligible for FSM or have been in the last 6 years, combined household income <Β£25,000, you or your parents receive universal credit, state school or college you attended has below average attainment/has received few Cambridge offers/does not offer the A level you need, you have experienced medical issues that have caused absences from education, you experienced bereavement of a close family member while in secondary education, you have been a young carer or become a parent while in education, you became homeless or estranged from family while in education, you moved state schools two or more times while in secondary education, your parent or carer was imprisoned while you were in education

So, if you have been dreaming of Cambridge but educational disruption means you have had to study a different course/your grades are slightly lower than you would have liked - this is well worth a look at!

πŸ’¬ DISCUSSION Are GCSEs that deep?

β€’ Upvotes

Are 8s and 9s the same grade for Oxbridge STEM? Will they discriminate if idk say I got 5 9s and someone else got 6 9s. Some people say they get converted to A*s but idk at the elite lvl.

Context: from a school with a very high GCSE average

Thanks for your help

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS Since it's application season...

Pls remember that this or any other sub or thestudentroom are not representative of everyone taking A levels and you can still get into top unis for good courses even if you don’t have 9999999999999999999999 in your gcses and 19 A*s at A level.

I got into Imperial med with AAA predicted and 9988877766 gcses with my UCAT just on the threshold (I know these are decent grades but I see people on here saying that you can't get into med with any 6s and you need all A stars)!!!

If you want to get into med or a top uni then you can make it happen!!! Don’t compare yourself to others and focus the things you can change, and an offer WILL be seeing you!!! πŸŽ‰

Predicted AAA, should I choose manchester University or UCL . I'm trying to do electrical engineering and I'm eligible for a contextual, which is why AAA is enough. If I go UCL I'll only have the maintenance loan, no family help and if I go manchester, I can just go from home. What do you guys think I should do.

πŸ™ I WANT HELP How is St. Hildas?

β€’ Upvotes

I did an open app for Oxford because I didn’t want to have a preference for a certain college and then be disappointed when I didn’t get into that one. I just got an email saying that if I did get in, it would be to St. Hildas. Iβ€˜m applying for PPE and just wanted to know like if I got a good college or I got unlucky.

OTHER i missed out on applying to Cambridge 2 years in a row over bs

I genuinely don't know how i got into this situation, i feel like a big prank is being played on me right now but unfortunately this is genuinely my real life.

Last year, I was planning on applying to Cambridge for a course that required an entrance exam. I was aware of this and far in advance so i booked it months before and i remember paying for it and then picking a place to do my exam along with getting a confirmation that i had booked a center in a website. However i neglected to check my email which for whatever reason never got the confirmation email for the test center. Infact, somehow someway, i had never actually booked my exam to begin with despite it being recorded then that i had paid for it. I then spent a month revising for the exam just to find out a few days before (after the final deadline to book a center) that i somehow didn't have anywhere booked. This led to 5 days of being stringed along by pearson edexcel before having them tell me on the day of my exam that they couldn't do anything to help me anyways meaning i couldn't apply to Cambridge that year. This was heartbreaking but i kept it stepping.

I ended up applying to imperial and needing 3A* in order to get in, which i unfortunately narrowly missed (for separate also stupid reasons) leaving me with A*A*A as my final grades. Instead of going to my third choice uni, i realised that i could apply for Cambridge and Imperial (given i take an extra subject) again so i took a gap year and restarted the application process.

I made sure not to repeat my mistake with my entrance exam and my application went smoothly so after October 15th i just decided to stop thinking about it. I saw a bunch of emails telling me that my application had been received so i didn't bother reading them and just went about life normally.

That was until yesterday afternoon at like 8pm when i saw a final warning email from the College i applied to, reminding me to do something called a MyCambridge application (like a 10 minute form where you have to give some basic information) otherwise my application would not be processed. I did it as soon as i could, and in the process found out that it was due at 6pm that day. I also found out the reason why I didnt know anything about this was because Outlook for some reason decided to put the informational email from the university along with all subsequent reminders into my junk which, combined with the fact that im applying by myself and first in my family to even apply for uni let alone Cambridge, meant that i litterally had no way to know about the requirement until it was literally too late (outside of if i had gotten lucky and i was at home to read the final warning email earlier). I emailed the college and the university explaining my situation but the university told me to talk to the college and the college straight up told me that since i sent it late then they arent considering my application and that they were going to mark me as rejected (their response was super robotic and they didn't mention anything i said so i doubt they even read my email anyway). I might send one last hail mary email but i doubt it'll change anything

Im genuinely so gutted that i just had to get this off my chest. I genuinely cant believe i managed to whiff it three times over the course of one year. Like, not saying id do it, but im starting to understand why people SH, im just so mad at myself for not being that little bit more proactive or just reading my mail in the morning or anything. Maybe this is a punishment from God for not diligent in my prayer enough idek. It just stings extra too because of how bad i genuinely wanted to go to the university, so much so that i took a whole gap year just to not even be rejected for not being good enough but rather over a minor ten minute form that Microsoft decided to hide from me. If i don't end up getting Imperial i might just have a semitruck turn me into a stain on the pavement who knows.

TLDR;
always check your mail, especially your junk

edit:
i just realise i shouldve just lied and said i had a power outage fuck man why was i raised to be honest

edit edit:
i probably would have had to provide evidence anyways. Only thing that couldve changed is microsoft not putting the emails in junk or if i randomly checked my email in the morning. long story short theres nothing i could have done

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS LSE WARNING!

LSE has publicly stated that they will flat out reject people if they have heavy suspicion that they used AI to construct their personal statement.

As they place so much value on the personal statement, they obivously want it to be yours, not a machine's work.

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS LNAT 26

β€’ Upvotes

hello- I’ve applied for Oxford, UCL, LSE and KCL and I’m in an awkward position. my section B I believe went well but section A, at just 26, is holding me back. will this harm my chances? I achieved all 9s at gcse (state school) predicted 3A*.

thank you

πŸŽ“ UNI / UCAS Did much worse in the LNAT due to trauma, is Cambridge still in the game?

β€’ Upvotes

I’ve been going through a trauma flare up for the past few months. It’s caused quite significant cognitive deterioration, even my teachers noticed. My doctor sent an email to my Cambridge college telling them how my performance in school was affected by it. I’ve also had my teacher discuss my trauma in the UCAS reference as it impacted my GCSEs as well.

Of course, my LNAT was weaker as a result. I got 20-24 in section A, not sure about the essay (which Cambridge considers). Cambridge offer holders’ average LNAT score is usually about 30. I did try, I did prepare and use the best resources. I’m so disappointed, but also not surprised. I was in a very difficult state cognitively with my trauma flare up.

I’m really worried Cambridge is out of the bag now. I know I’m extenuating, but I really doubt it will make much of a difference, or will it?

I think my other stats are quite good. I’m predicted two A* one A, including an A* in EPQ, with being one of the top 1% in my school. I’ve achieved 99999988888 in a non-selective state school with trauma impacting my GCSEs. My personal statement was checked by Cambridge students and said it was very good.

I hate how something out of my control can impact my application in such a significant way. I didn’t ask to bear the consequences of a traumatic event that happened to me years ago at the hands of someone else. Other applicants are so lucky. I envy that they’re reaching for their dreams without something like trauma holding them back. Cambridge is my dream, still my dream, and yet I’ve had to fight my trauma since GCSE just to give myself a fighting chance.

I don’t know what to do. I’ve cried all night. Iβ€˜m still shocked. At last, my trauma has impacted my application in a way I was trying to prevent for years. And before you mention it, I’m due for trauma therapy but I have to wait until January due to the long waiting list. What can I do? Is Cambridge still in the game for me? Any help would be appreciated :(
