better written? (character vs character) More suffering doesn't equal better writing

I'm seeing people in here often rate shows just based on suffering, while more chill shows get disrespected. Having a villain who suffered and then turned evil doesn't mean it's well written, a 10-year old can write a story like that. Same goes for main characters or any character for that matter.

For example, shows like re zero with cringey over the top dialogue and repetitive mechanics having good rep just because they seem intellectual, and character suffers, that must mean it's good. What about all the other points? Subtle character dynamics? No melodrama and superficial conflict? Everything that uses suffering as it's main driving point is just shallow and boring for anyone with media literacy.

discussion Sasukes character and what could've been.

Ive had this opinion for a long time and im curious to see if others agree. I think sasukes character was ruined the moment he met edo itachi and then joined the allies in the war. I think a much better route wouldve been after he gets itachis eyes, they tragically both never cross paths but come very close. Sasuke seeing the world at war even with itachis sacrifices continues to want vengeance on the leaf. He joins obito in the war(having the plot thread of obitos manipulation of sasuke actually go somewhere) but in the end its Sasuke that betrays obito and madara to become the 10 ten tails jinchuriki making Sasuke the actual final villain. Madara could even relish in this seing the next generation of his clan go against the 1st hokages will of the future. This could've led to a real final fight for the world between sasuke and Naruto. Instead of the fight we got(which was cool dont get me wrong) but felt flat and meaningless. In this final the way naruto finally gets to sasuke is through the concept that was introduced when they clashed after the danzo fight(how truly strong shinobi can transfer emotions with a simple exchange of fists) which has sasuke hear edo itachis words to naruto about the truly strong rely on others and what it means to be hokage.

Anyway I've had a couple and felt on sharing my what could've been.

What do u guys think couldve been other potential routes for sasukes character .

discussion Does morality matter when it comes to writing in fiction?

Post image

I took a screenshot of this comment that I found in this subreddit and I thought the word ‘morality tax’ was kind of weird and vague.

Should you not care about a characters morals at all and how it frames it in a narrative in a piece of media?

What I’m describing is very vague because usually when you critique problematic media, people will complain and say ‘you care about morals too much’ which doesn’t really make sense and is kind of a vague/nonsensical answer.

discussion How well written is Kendrick Lamar?

I am mainly taking into consideration Good kid, m.A.A.d city, Damn., and Mr. Morale and The Big Stepper, as I consider them a more personal album for Kendrick's own life, which has turned into a narrative, and each of them tells the tale of him from a different life point.

My personal favorite album from him is Mr. Morale and The Big Stepper, as it is a great introspection into his life after fame, which I find rather more interesting, as it gives a great lens into the life of a person that has achieved everything one can in their field and is still somehow struggling and not struggling because of external factors rather than his own family, actions, and decisions. Also, I like the fact that he revisits his family in this album, putting or painting a complete picture of his entire development.

To me, he is one of the best character in term of 'coming of age' character writing.

Kendrick the character in the album not the singer.

Why the fuck am I getting downvoted? I didn't even say anything bad about your lord gintoki.

better written? (character vs character) Neon Genesis Evangellion is a life changing experience and Episode 4 is the best psychological episode in fiction

Post image

What I like about it is that show about giant robots doesn't just focus on battles and plot, but takes its time to develop characters and dive deep into their psychology. Shinji has to be the best written teenage character in anime by far. His struggles and relationship with his absent father are depicted so well, that nothing ever feels out of place. But it's not just Shinji. Every other character has complexity as well. Even Asuka who suddenly appeared in the middle of the show quickly became a pivotal part of the cast as well.

The plot is so interconnected that you can blink and miss an important detail, especially in the second half and that generational run starting from episode 18. Although the way it's done doesn't take away from the overall character dynamics. There's not a single anime that has more depth than NGE, even though it may look simple on surface and people with limited media literacy skills can easily mis-interpret it.

And the ending of the original series has to be the most though-provoking thing I've ever watched. It throws away all the unimportant details and just focuses on what matters aka Shinji's internal state. The fact that the author had balls to do it like that just shows how much confidence he had in his own creation. Bro is an absolute chad. Every now and then I rewatch those scenes to remind myself what true masterpiece looks like.

He is strongest of all, the smartest of all, a master of every single skill, gods suck his dick, heroines fall in love with him, heroes trust him to raise their kids, all his crimes are forgiven no matter how cruel.

This is catnip for an incel. A power fantasy so blatant it's actually kinda cringe.

better written? (character vs character) Yuji is a bad main character in a great anime (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Post image

I love JJK. The power system, the subversion of common tropes, characters, the story (especially Goated "Hidden Inventory / Premature Death" arc) - everything is just top tier, but Yuji as a main character drags it down in my list.

First I was ok with him, but then I learned that Gege (the author of JJK) initially had in mind completely different story with Yuta as the main character. Since that moment I haven't been able to shake this feeling of a missed opportunity. I have to say that Yuta is much more interesting character than Yuji ever was. Yuiji's really a bland main character that doesn't fit the story and so his arc is quite repetitive with the same thing happening all over again and again. In my rating he's arguably not even in top-10 JJK characters, which would be almost catastrophic for any other anime, but JJK has so many great characters that they can still carry it.

It tells you a lot that the best arc of the show is the one that doesn't even have Yuji in it at all ("Hidden Inventory / Premature Death" that develops Gojo and Geto relationship), and in most other arcs people just wait for Sukuna to come out and take his body so that something finally happens. The downside is that after that we usually get another repetitive arc of Yuji crying and blaming himself for what Sukuna's done which we already saw 200 times in other animes.
