Post From the All-Knowing Mods A Roleplay Guide for Villainy

Hey all. I know we've had a few posts already that outlined handy rules for roleplay etiquette. Here are some:

  • RP Etiquette:

https://www.reddit.com/r/wizardposting/s/hDv5wbuOF7

  • When to play an OP character and how to do it well:

https://www.reddit.com/r/wizardposting/s/7RX9Zwmp8H

  • Recognizing abuse and manipulation in roleplay environments:

https://www.reddit.com/r/wizardposting/s/MuYKwuy2Ef

...

But it has come to my attention that we might want a guide specifically focusing on the more villainous side of wizardposting. This is partially because matters concerning ethics have a way of getting more heated and partially because playing a villain (or even a morally questionable character) can present unique challenges. Conflict is the driving force behind story, after all, and we want to make sure we do it in a way that's fun for all parties.

This post is targeted at the subreddit villains primarily, but I think anyone engaging in roleplay could benefit.

Anyway, here we go:

1. None of this is personal.

This probably seems obvious, but I'd like to stress it because the kinds of in-character clashes that a straight-up villain gets into can sometimes create high tensions. Remember that the person on the other side of the screen is almost certainly not seriously evil. And they almost certainly do not think that you are either. We might write about doing evil things. We might roleplay evil things. But none of this means anything in regard to the real-life ethics of the flesh and blood person you are interacting with.

2. If it does become personal, be careful.

Ideally, we would be rational actors all the time, but unfortunately we are all mere humans (probably). Even when you know perfectly well that none of this is personal, it can still be hard to fully keep your emotions separate. This is understandable. We all get attached to our wizard characters, we all take moral stances, and we all get invested in plotlines. I mean, hey, if we aren't personally invested in our wizard roleplay, why are we even here?

When this happens, just be sure to proceed with caution. Try not to let out-of-character feelings influence what you do in-character. And, of course, it's basically never a bad idea to be open with people about it.

3. Get permission.

Another one that's been thoroughly covered before. But I bring it up because, as a villain, whatever evil thing you're doing is probably quite a bit more distressing than your run of the mill wizard shenanigans. Perhaps unsurprisingly, stepping on another roleplayer's toes is a bit more severe when you do it by burning their tower and kidnapping their apprentice. And if it's something particularly bad that you're planning, you should make sure to be very clear about your intentions and the potential consequences so the other person isn't taken by surprise.

4. It will probably feel a little unfair sometimes.

I will make no bones about it. Playing a villain will make people hostile to you. Do not take it personally.(see rule 1) But I will not deny that it can feel overwhelming sometimes to attract a lot of hate, even if it is all in-character. Further, as a villain, you will probably need to be more gracious about losing fights. While it's true that every character has to accept losses sometimes, playing a heel means you can generally expect to 'hit the mat' more often and more definitively.

It's not all bad though. Villains are empowered to behave badly in creative ways. And sometimes even losing can be fun.

5. Consider content warnings.

This is not a hard rule, but if you are writing something particularly upsetting, it might be wise to provide a content warning. This is not a condemnation of the presence of dark or serious content. It's just nice to give people the opportunity to decide if they want to deal with it.

6. Morally ambiguous characters.

Not all characters fit neatly into the villain/hero dichotomy. Much of the advice here will apply to anyone who's character steps outside the category of 'good guy'. But it's still important to remember that explicitly and intentionally playing a villain is very different than playing a morally ambiguous character (even if you personally do not find their actions ambiguous). Condemning actions in-character is absolutely fine, but it's still up to the person writing the character to define that characters morality. I understand that this gets messy in a community with a lot of differing views, so if it becomes clear that you are at an impasse, it might be best to back off.

That said, for any morally ambiguous characters, if you do something bad, you should expect people to react realistically in-character. You can't really be shocked that other characters don't like your cool new murder spell.

7. Note for heroes and other non-villains.

Lastly, I just want to address the protagonist types. Cut villains a little slack sometimes. Setting aside that it's more fun for us if we occasionally get a win, it also generally makes a better story.

And keep in mind that the person saying and doing horrible things in-character is there to have fun too. This is a cooperative activity, after all.

...

With all that said, I'm off to do some evil scheming. Have fun. Be good to each other.

Welcome to r/wizardposting! Assuming you just wandered in and have no idea what the hell you're looking at, this is a place people pretend to be are wizards and other magical things. That can range anywhere from just posting a meme while ranting about the Council and casting testicular torsion, to our more niche subcommunity of full-blown roleplay, creative writing, and interactive fiction.

When commenting:

/uw means unwiz

/rw means rewiz

We have an official DISCORD if you're into that kind of thing.

Other than that? Have fun, drink water, and remember to step away from the orb every once in a while. Be sure to review the rules in the sidebar before posting, and have fun.

Thanks for stopping by!

Aetherial News 🗞 AN AIRSHIP JUST HIT THE COUNCIL SPIRES

Post image

Just now, at the Council Citadel, an airship appeared out of the portal and struck the Citadel's central spire, which is currently collapsing. Sources state this is a passenger airship dubbed the “Nautilon”, but why it's doing this is unknown.

…This just in, the airship was piloted by old councillor Koranth, returning from the plane of endless parties seemingly to enact revenge upon the Council for her replacement. The spire has collapsed with significant casualties ensuing. Teams are currently on the scene to capture her and her crew.

Lorepost (open interaction) 📖 Announcement of the Gilded Council

Post image
45 Upvotes

Greetings, fellow spell weavers and arcane aspirants. I am Arach. Many of you may know me, many of you may not. But who I am doesn’t really matter. Rather it is what I am announcing today that does.

This message has been made after much thought, and for a specific reason. There is an issue facing our sprawling society of magically inclined nations, cultures, and hermits. One that no one has seemed to address publicly, until now. That issue being the utter failing of the council, the sovereign force that has pushed its way into authority over us.

Now the issue I speak of is not that of the traditional council complaints. I am not here to moan over taxes, nor the banning of spells, nor even the tenuous and constantly shifting legality of certain dark magics. Rather I am here because of the failings of the modern council as a whole to recognize and follow its original purpose.

The fools of the new council operate under the naive idea that there is some inherent state of proper balance to our social world. They see the regulating states of nature and decide to apply that ideal baselessly to our societies. But this is denying the natural tendencies of magic wielders. What spellcaster does not bend the rules for themselves? There is no balance in immortality, or in harnessing the arcane for ourselves. It is our nature to take for ourselves and give back only that which we no longer have use for. So why then does the modern council refuse to acknowledge this?

They act as if there is some code of moral rights that it is their duty to uphold and enforce. They act as if the council is meant to be honest, and fair. But that has never been its purpose! This foolishness is based only on a refusal to acknowledge the true original purpose of the council. It was never meant to operate as a true government, or a regulatory body. Because the council does not hold its own lands to be governed, nor can it properly regulate sovereign nations, no matter how hard it tries. The original purpose of the council was to be the oil that kept the gears of our worlds and realms turning.

It is no secret that our realms are chaotic, volatile, and prone to conflict. In truth, the only peace our many worlds will ever know is that which is fragile, and easily shattered. The council wasn’t made to prevent that shattering, such a goal would never be feasible. No, the council was made to lessen the frequency of those conflicts, and to smooth over the chaos that would ensue whenever peace did shatter.

What is now considered the “corruption” and “unfairness” of the old council was a necessary factor in ensuring that process of smoothing over. The rampant bribery used to avoid council law which is now nowhere to be seen? It allowed the old council to dictate looser terms to those who otherwise would follow no terms at all. The corruption that swept the crimes of councilors and politicians under the rug? That was a tactic which prevented escalations and postponed conflicts while giving the council time to prepare for when the tensions eventually boiled over. The endless bureaucracy of paperwork and necessary approvals for any official council act? It prevented the collecting and abuse of power from within the council itself.

The current council acts as if it were a government even though it has no citizens. Acts as a regulatory body despite holding no proper means of enforcement. In their naivety they have denied the council its true purpose and rendered it an ineffective group incapable of causing any real change or help to anything other than a childish notion of upholding the status quo. It is an approach that will inevitably fail to keep up with the rest of the world, and will result in the council being either crushed or left behind.

It is for these egregious failings and missteps of the new council that I am making a decision some may call drastic. I can no longer tolerate this idealistic mockery of my beloved institution. I’ve long been a supporter of the council, I am a former member, and one of its largest and most consistent donors. After my removal from office I had hoped that with time and proper funding that the council would right itself and could go back to its old ways. Needless to say those hopes have long since been dashed, and as such I am ceasing my donations.

Additionally, since the current council won’t uphold its original purpose, I will simply just have to make another council, so at least someone will be attempting to do right by it. In pursuit of this I will be repossessing my former personal additions to the council that I had left for them to use after I was expelled. This does include a few buildings around the main council citadel, as well as a few notable structures within the citadel proper. Obviously I won’t take anything vital to the council’s continued functioning, I know they’re already going to throw a fit over this without me disrupting them further. But considering I funded those buildings for a council that currently no longer exists, I am well within my rights to take them back.

Now I’m sure many of the current council members will be up in arms about this. But to them I simply ask this. What’re you gonna do about it?

To the rest of my fellow wielders of the arcane, I am announcing a ball to celebrate my new council. A Gilded Council, one coated in the glory of purpose the modern council now denies. I trust that all those reading now, whether supporters of my goal or not, will attend. To celebrate and, if not welcome a better council, than to pay tribute to the old council which held such fond memories for so many.

And to those of you interested in this new opportunity, please take note. I am open and eager to accept anyone who would like to join me in creating a proper council. All you need do is offer your services and there are no limits to the possible roles you could fill.

And with that, my announcement is over.
To everyone reading this: thank you, and I wish you all a truly exhilarating day.

Community Event 🌏☄️ A Gilded Gala

Post image
13 Upvotes

Guests approaching the gala are first greeted by the smell of food and spices emanating from within. Arach’s dedication to throwing a proper celebration is evident to the entering guests in the grounds themselves, the area is immaculately prepared, paved paths have been dug and set cleanly into the ground, the grass is cut uniformly short while beds of rare decorative plants mark out the edges of the event. Lively music plays from a space shaded by a large fabric canopy, its open sides revealing the extravagant main area of the event with intricately carved wooden tables trimmed with gold surrounding a central open space.

As each guest enters the event through a large archway at the front, a recorded psychic message is sent to their minds.

“Welcome one and all to the first official gala of the newly formed Gilded Council. After my recent announcement I went straight to work preparing this lovely event for all to attend! Truly it’s been too long since a proper celebration was had!

The gala grounds are an open air space with plenty of free room and secondary spaces for guests to enjoy themselves, but importantly there are three main sections open to all guests.

The main section is the outdoor ballroom. The area is shaded by a large fabric canopy, and underneath lies numerous dining tables and a section of dance floor. Guests can order food by simply using one of the enchanted dinner menus located at the tables to fill your plate. This makes a wonderful section for those of you who enjoy conversation and discussions.

The second section is a repossessed council garden. I had it built for the council as a venue to throw events just like this. So it seemed only fitting that I take it back for this gala. I would suggest to those of you less inclined to social interaction and noise to see how you enjoy the garden. The large hedges and fountains provide a wonderful sound barrier as well as a respectable amount of privacy for non-public conversations.

The final section happens to also be repossessed council property. This time a building. Originally it was a simple auxiliary structure I had built to house the departments I headed during my time in the council. But, with the renovations I’ve made, it will act as the beginnings of proper headquarters for the Gilded Council. The entire building is open for partygoers, and has been filled with various temporary games and activities ranging from traditional carnival games to an entire floor which has been temporarily set up as a maze with a reward for anyone who can get through it.

For anyone with any questions about my improved council, be it my plans or if you’re interested in joining me on this endeavor, or even if you aren’t interested in the Gilded Council at all and merely want to talk to me casually. Please feel free to find me at the ballroom where I will be glad to speak to any and every one of you attending.”

With that the psychic message ends and the guests are free to attend and enjoy themselves as they like.

/uw This event is meant for people’s characters to mingle and talk, so interaction is encouraged, even if it’s just saying your character is attending, maybe what they’re wearing to the event and what they’re doing once they’re there. Everyone is welcome to interact, speak with Arach, interact with other guests, or just describe what your character is doing at the event like ordering food or what section of the event they are at (feel free to make up things like specific carnival games your character plays or details of the scenery and sections, whatever you want to most enjoy yourself). Have fun!!!
