In 2015 14 year old Ahmed Mohammed was arrested for bringing in a clock he "created" that his teacher thought looked like a bomb. This set off a firestorm, started the #IStandWithAhmed trend on social media and culminated with an invitation to NASA and the White House to show off his "invention"

A 16-Year-Old Boy in India Had a Tooth Growing in His Eye Socket. Doctors Say It's the First Case of Its Kind in the World.
A 16-year-old boy in India has had a tooth removed from his left eye socket, between the eyelid and the eyebrow. He had noticed a painless swelling for about a month, but was only taken to hospital when two hard, whitish points began poking through. A scan revealed a fully formed canine tooth – an extremely unusual example of an ectopic tooth.
[Ectopic teeth](https://www.aaojournal.org/article/S0161-6420(25)00801-2/fulltext) are teeth that develop or erupt in the wrong place. Instead of following the usual path to the mouth, they end up somewhere else. They can be normal baby or adult teeth, or sometimes extra teeth known as supernumerary [teeth](https://theconversation.com/topics/teeth-2317).
Ectopic teeth are most often found in the maxillary sinus – the hollow space behind the cheekbone – but they have also been found in the nasal cavity, palate, chin, jaw joint and eye socket. A [review of 61 published cases](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10548160/) found that they can go unnoticed for years or cause pain, swelling, headaches or difficulty opening the mouth. A tooth growing inside the nose can lead to a blocked nose, discharge and nosebleeds.
So how does a tooth end up somewhere as strange as an eye socket?
The face develops from several groups of cells and tissues that move and join together in the womb. Tooth development depends on interactions between some of these tissues. If this process goes awry, a tooth can sometimes develop in an abnormal location – even away from the mouth.
Developmental problems are not the only possible explanation. A [review](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7920564/) of ectopic teeth in the upper jaw also lists injuries, dental treatment and growths such as cysts and tumours as possible causes.
Having several extra teeth can sometimes be a sign of an inherited condition. One example is [cleidocranial dysplasia](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/expert-qa/cleidocranial-dysplasia-ccd), a rare genetic disorder that affects the development of bones and teeth. Other [much rarer genetic conditions](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3188466/) have also been linked to extra teeth.
The Indian teenager had no history of trauma, and doctors could not determine why teeth had developed in his eye socket.
**How are ectopic teeth found and treated?**
Whether an ectopic tooth needs removing depends on where it is and whether it is causing problems. An isolated tooth with no symptoms can sometimes just be monitored, but it may need to be removed if it causes an infection, blocks a passage, damages nearby structures or is linked to a cyst.
Doctors use scans to pinpoint the tooth and see what lies close to it. A CT scan can show whether it sits near the eyes, nerves or blood vessels, which helps them decide whether to operate.
Surgery ranges from a simple extraction to a complex operation. For teeth in the nose or sinuses, surgeons can often use an endoscope – a thin tube with a camera and surgical instruments on the end – to remove them through the nostrils rather than making a larger cut.
A [review](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31277707/) identified 27 published cases in which ectopic teeth in the nose or sinuses were removed this way.
Before surgery, the most common symptoms were nasal obstruction, discharge, facial pain and nosebleeds. The review found that endoscopic removal worked in the reported cases, although the evidence comes from a handful of published cases rather than large clinical trials.
Removing an ectopic tooth does not mean another ordinary tooth will grow in its place. But people with one supernumerary tooth can sometimes have others, so doctors may use scans to look for them. A few reports describe another extra tooth developing in the same area after removal, although this appears to be extremely rare.
In the Indian teenager’s case, the scan found no other ectopic teeth. His tooth had simply ended up in a very unusual place.

A century ago, bachelor recluse Joseph Marconnot (1860-1924) wrote "I don’t fear death, but I do fear what comes after death and would like to have my body preserved forever". He willed his body to be mummified in a glass-lidded coffin and it can still be viewed today.
