SOLVED Updated rules post

Hi everyone, there have been some rule changes since the last post, so here is an updated post. I have taken the section about helpful points to consider when writing a post from the last rules post, with some minor edits.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES.

  1. Post titles must have at least one book detail.
  2. Solved posts should be marked as solved. You can flair your own post as solved by commenting "solved solved solved" on the post. If you see someone else's post is not flaired as solved, you can report it and a moderator will flair it.
  3. A post cannot have more than one book/series. To clarify, multiple books from the same series are allowed to be in the same post. Multiple short stories from the same book are also allowed in the same post. If they're not part of the same book or series, they must be in separate posts.
  4. Posts should be on topic. Posts must be looking for a specific book/series/story that you want to find. Posts looking for general reading suggestions, links to read books you already know the title and author of, or general unrelated content will be removed.
  5. Do not offer money/favors to solve posts. You're welcome to gild or otherwise award a comment after your post is solved, but you can't offer it before the post is solved.
  6. Be respectful.
  7. Always check AI-generated answers against another source before submitting them. We strongly prefer that users avoid AI answers in general, as they almost always match a description to an unrelated or nonexistent title.

Please consider these points when writing your /r/whatsthatbook post:

Your Post Title

Briefly the book, not your situation. Avoid titles like "Help, I can't remember this book..." or "I read this when I was a kid..." or "I NEED HELP"

Include the overall genre of the book in your post title, such as "romance novel" or "scifi"

Posts with vague titles will be removed. The general age range the book is meant for and year are not specific enough on their own. For example, we will remove a post titled "Children's book from 2000s." We will not remove a post titled "Children's sci-fi novel from 2000s." We prefer titles like "Children's sci-fi novel from 2000s about kid whose cousin invents a new telescope and discovers aliens."

The Book

Fiction or non-fiction?

Describe the plot.

Describe notable characters.

What genre is it?

Physically describe the book -- Hardcover/paperback? Book cover color?

When was it set?

How long was the book?

Anything notable about the original language? Did you read it English? If not, what language?

... And You

When (what year) did you read it?

How old were you when you read it? Was it age appropriate?

Where did you get the book? School library, book fair, book store selling new and/or used books, flea market, borrowed from a friend, given as a gift from X person who is about Y age, or from an online store?

Was it new when you read it?

What age range was it for?

Other notes:

We allow posts about short stories, poems, fanfiction, etc. on this subreddit.

If you want to post a picture of a page you found, upload it to imgur and put the link in a post. Please include at least one detail about the events or characters on the page in your title.

SOLVED YA (?) Series about a girl who sings to create wind

Hi there

I'm nostalgic about a book series I read when I was young but cannot remember the title or series for the life of me.

It was definitely a series , possibly YA genre where it follows a girl who lives in secluded nunnery (?) Where she was being trained to be a priestess of wind.

To create wind, they have to sing songs. They learn different songs to create different effects with the wind.

There's a guy she falls in love with , possible name Darren or Daryl, but I remember that they actually don't end up together

The series is about them traveling around the world, collecting comrades, fighting against a government or something ? Honesty the details are hazy beyond that women sing to create wind. 🤣

UNSOLVED YA apocalypse novel where prepper father moves family into bunker. Dark.

Details are a bit hazy:

I read this around the late 2000s/early 2010s. Main character is a teen in a wealthy/prepper family; other family members are a younger sibling, a mother, and a father. I believe there's an extravagant party shortly before the dad moves the family down into the bunker. The kids aren't told exactly what's going on, just that it's not safe outside. The mother becomes pregnant at one point. The food supply starts to dwindle; I think there's implications of bioengineering a new food source? Or something like that. CW: cannibalism At one point the mother withdraws from the kids and they don't see her again. There's a cannibalism reveal eventually. My younger self read it as "the mom was churning out babies and they were eating those" which I'm not sure makes sense, I think it's more likely they just ate the mother.Oh and, after all this, they leave the bunker and find out the world has just been normal the whole time. There was never an apocalypse, never any threat, the dad just decided to keep them isolated in the bunker for no good reason.

Uh, thanks for your help!

UNSOLVED Weird sci fi book about antimatter black holes and a bunch of other stuff

Okay so this was a weird book and I only have a binch of weird clues but stick with me here

So what I remember about it is that it was set in the far future and humanity discovers a probe going faster than light and eventually harnesses that power for itself to find the civilization that made, that's all I remember about the plot

I also remember that for some reason I think everyone was nudist for some reason? And also that the alien species was reptilian, and that all their ships were powered by antimatter black holes.

And the big reveal at the end is that antimatter travels backwards in time, and that's how the FTL drive works.

It was also old, like pre 1970s, and I don't think it was that famous, it was like crappy old sci fi. But I just cannot remember what it was actually called lol.

They were shaped like a poo a wee and a fart and they had faces. The background of the book was white. If someone could help that’d be so so great!!

SOLVED Children's book about a boy discovering another boy living in a boarded up cave

I vividly remember this book we read in English class in 2015, when I was 13 years old. I never finished the book and it still bothers me that I don't know how it ends!

The story was about a boy who lived close to a cave. When he was really young, police boarded up the cave and one of the officers told him to never go near it.

As an older child, he spent a lot of time in his treehouse close to the cave. One day he discovered there was something living in the cave, which he thought it was another boy. He'd take apples and pieces of his birthday cake to the boy in the cave to eat, and the boy in the cave would return the favour by bringing him worms and grubs.

One day he got worried about the boy in the cave — I can't remember exactly why, I think the boy in the cave didn't come to the entrance? The boy became worried, thinking the food he's been giving the boy in the cave was too rich and could've made him sick. He goes to his mother and tells her everything, but she dismisses it (I think she told him to wait for his father to get home to talk to him, but I can't remember).

Desperate, the boy breaks the boards off the cave entrance to go looking for the boy in the cave. It's an elaborate tunnel system that goes very deep. He does find the boy in the cave (I think I remember him seeing the boy in the cave had a hunched back) and the boy in the cave started leading him deeper and deeper into the tunnels.

At that point his parents had called the police and the police had fully opened the entrance to the cave, using rope to venture in and search for him, but they haven't had any luck.

And that's as far as I read and eleven years later it's still killing me that I don't know how it ends!! I'm desperate to know what the book's name is so I can go looking for it!

UNSOLVED Story about a man who discovers an underground village where everyone has no eyes

In middle school my teacher made us read this book about a guy who goes to this village. I think it was like underground and it was always dark. Because of that the people there had no eyes.

And I actually think he married one of them.

Does anyone know what I’m talking about?

UNSOLVED Kids Graphic Novel Full of Short Scary Stories

This book was from my elementary school library, all I remember is a hard cover, square book with a green, black, and white cover. It was a graphic novel with multiple (I only remember two) spooky stories. The pages had no color, if I'm remembering correctly the images were all colored in with different shades of a muted gray-green color with white and maybe black.

the two stories I remember were 1) two brothers are in the bath together playing with their snorkels when the tub water turns into the sea with a bunch of merfolk trying to get them eaten, they are saved though by a friendly merperson. And 2) this group of girls are out on Halloween and get invited to this house by a group of sisters, (I think, its something like that) but the sisters are actually vampires and chase the girls, they escape though. (there is one girl and one vampire that become friends)

UNSOLVED Alien orb guardians, main character is a kid, abducted humans

Read it in the 90s. I think some humans have been abducted by aliens and are living in an earth simulated neighborhood. I specifically remember it rains an hour every afternoon. There used to be thunder but it disturbed people so now its just rain. Main character is a kid who manages to take control of the orb guardians and thus control the situation. Theres a golden orb guardian and then the head cheese orb guardian is rainbow colored. and thats all ive got. Been driving me nuts for years and im really hoping it wasnt just a mushroom trip...

SOLVED Short stories about clever girls around the world, read in the late 90's

There was a book series at my library as a kid (that I can no longer remember the name of) that was all short stories of girls solving problems by being clever and determined. I dont know the age of the books but definitely read them in the 90's. I've tried google and goodreads but no luck.

One story had a girl drive off an ogre that her brother was going to have to fight by pretending his sword was a mere butter knife.

Another story had a girl determined to win a cooking/baking competition by making a dish with cloudberries that she had to gather herself.

On to the iffy parts I think it was a series of books, I dont think they were very long, maybe a 100 pages? I think they were geared towards young readers but I started reading adult sci-fi at 11 so my age guesstimate could be way off. I think they tended to be fantasy or historical settings, the three I remember were Japan, China and maybe Switzerland? But I'm pretty sure it was a different location each story.

UNSOLVED A novel about a half fey woman. The title was three words: (something) the garden

I was just recommended this book to me by someone in a drive through window, so I didn't have a lot of time to get specifics about the plot or anything. He said the woman liked gorgeous, so I imagine there's a woman on the cover. Other than that, I don't have much to go on. I thought he said it was valued Through The Garden but the only thing I found like that was a children's picture book.

SOLVED YA Female lead dark fantasy with powers

The story is about a young woman who has to join the army (mercenaries? Guard?) with her young man friend because they aren't welcome at the (orphanage? Servants quarters?) they were staying at.

She's unnaturally weak/sickly and is carried by everyone else until they have to cross a nightmarish rift of darkness with monsters inside and when everyone is in danger she suddenly finds that she has light powers and they make it through the rift.

She is immediately sequestered away to be with the other people with powers where they wear beautiful half coat/half dresses called keftas(???). There she learns to use her powers and becomes healthy for once.

The main powered guy is evil though and manipulates and controls her to spread the rift and kill a whole town of people before she escapes with her friend.

I thought the book was called Of Blood and Bone but the books that are brought up are not it. It's also not Blood and Ash.

I have so much info and can't find it! I read this book years ago and loved it. I've always wondered if there were sequels and finally have time to read them if I can just find the book!

UNSOLVED Illustrated children's book about a cat that takes a witch's broom on a joyride and gets lost

I don't remember the title or author. I had a copy in 1994 when I was 8 or 9. It was a story with illustrations and one or two sentences on every page. I remember it being about two black cats who belonged to a witch. The cats decide to steal her broom and take it on a joyride at night, but they lose control and crash. They must find their way home on foot and eventually are reunited with their witch.

I'm like 90% confident on those details...but there's always a chance I'm misremembering something. (Edit: It could have been one cat or two...Now I'm doubting my memory.)

Some lines I remember:

"The moon looked like a squashed orange" (when they were riding the broom over the treetops)

"Down, down, down, down, toward the lights below" (when they lost control of the broom)

"They had frog's legs for breakfast" (the last lines of the story at the end).

What I know it's not: Penny Lane "The Flying Saucer" or "When The Magic Stopped". These both involve cats flying and getting lost but alas, not a match.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

UNSOLVED Popup craft book

• Upvotes

I had a popup craft book in the early 2000s. There were instructions and pages with cutouts so that I could do all the popup art within the book itself. I remember 1) a page with some sort of green room (study?) with brown table, 2) a page with either a house or a castle, 3) a page with red airplane and cloud, and 4) I think the last one was a (pirate) ship. I remember having a lot of fun with it, and trying to find the same book for my kids if I can.

UNSOLVED Paper-Engineering book

• Upvotes

I had a paper engineering book in the early 2000s with pictures, instructions and perforated parts cutout pages, and I distinctly remember making a boxy looking blue, red, and yellow macaw with a crank near the bottom, so that when I turned the crank, the macaw would open and close it's mouth. It had other models as well, but I can't seem to remember them.

UNSOLVED Fiction drama - nanny brings little brother on vacation with family she works for and he drowns

I'm trying to identify a novel I read a few years ago. I don’t remember the year it’s set. It’s atleast 2000. The main character is a teenage girl (possibly late teens) and is responsible for her younger brother. She gets a job working for a wealthy family, and the mother - whose name I think starts with D — allows her to bring her little brother while she watches their kids.
During a pool or maybe lake outing (maybe part of a vacation), the girl steps away and the mother watches the kids. Both children start drowning. The mother manages to save her own child but can't reach the girl's little brother in time, and he dies. Afterward, the girl separates from the family; they give her money, but she waits a long time before cas the check

UNSOLVED A book by the name Extolzibly* Spoiler

*Of course i butchered the name

I remember the plot. This kid comes from an Irish family of drunkards and loud ones. Gets into this freak accident that tears him apart. Gets put into this top Oxford school that doubles as a special kids academy. The kid meets this girl who can turn invisible with a cloak, she hides her scars with it.

The person I mean to find is...Magellan. a man who harvests the tears of these children. Lives in a black glass house. The man used to be a student here?

The book ended like it was supposed to have a sequel but this Sean guy never followed up

UNSOLVED Teen novel I read at my middle school library in France

Hi everyone, I've been trying to find the title of a novel for years. I read it at my middle school library in France.
From what I remember, it was about a teenage girl (around 16) who had problems with her parents. She was very masculine and often questioned her gender and her feelings about women. She ends up meeting and falling for an older guy (an adult, and she lies to him about her age). He's a musician, more on the rock side.
The book had a very rock, even punk, atmosphere in how it described the girl's life.
That's the summary of the first two volumes, but I think there was a sequel that I never read.
I don't know if it's a French book or a translation from English.
I know it's vague, but it's all I have. I hope someone can point me in the right direction!

UNSOLVED series of unfortunate event such Benedict Society similar book?

ok so essentially i read this book when i was 13, im 21 now. it follows three siblings possibly on the search for their parents? the most poignant memory is a scene where they are being held back from their mission by being trapped in three houses that are perfectly tailored to their deepest desires and dreams. one could have been sports related? sorry for the less than ideal description. it has a bit of a Benedict society/Series of unfortunate events vibe but I am certain it is not that. Unless you can provide a super specific scene where that happened.
Help!

UNSOLVED Elementary fantasy, 2007 or before?

Book where a girl discovers that her world is actually just an island and she goes over the cliffs to see what's beyond. I read it in elementary school, so it has to have been written in 2007 or before. It's a fantasy novel. I was a good reader, so it could be a YA novel or it could be meant for kids. I'm guessing it's similar to Gregor the Overlander in reading level.

The main character is a girl (a child) who lives in a time/place without modern electronics, maybe even without electricity at all. Everyone in this place believes that this place is the whole world, and the edge or perimeter of their world are cliffs that fall down into a thick fog, so they can't tell what's at the bottom of the cliffs. People who go over the side never come back to their world.
Side note, I want to say there's a prince in this little world, but I'm really uncertain of that.

Eventually, the girl goes over the side to see what's beyond, and it ends up being water at the bottom of the cliffs, so their world is actually an island. She also finds a man who's been missing a very long time, and he has boat that he's just paddling around in. I guess either he couldn't find his way back to the world or he didn't want to.

The book itself was a small, but decently thick hardcover. I think I remember it being a deep red with ornate, yellow or gold decorations on the front.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! It's driving me crazy that I can't find it!

UNSOLVED Book about young girl that makes a jar creation with her mother that speaks and tells her to do bad things

I’ve found the identity of every book my mom used to read to me as a kid except this one. It’s about a young girl whose mother shows her how to make this thing in a jar using different ingredients. Eventually it comes alive and is visualized by a dark color with a face in the jar that gets more pronounced the more it torments the girl. I think it would tell her to misbehave but eventually she tells it off and it goes back to normal. I remember the jar was some sort of tradition as stated by the mom and I think it was meant to collect your bad thoughts or help them go away. I remember at the time as a kid watching that episode of Adventure Time where Finn gets over his fear of the ocean and that thing that comes out of his belly button reminded me of the jar creature. I remember one time I even tried to make my own version of this jar by putting water and glitter in a jar cause that’s what the illustration looked like to me. Once in a while I’ll remember this and try to find it but come up empty. There’s so many kids books involving jars that it’s hard to find and because I was so young I can’t remember all the details. I just remember the creature and making my own jar so vividly I can’t be misremembering the entire plot. I asked my mom about it once but she doesn’t remember all the books she read to me. I also don’t think the girl was white.
