Do I take my boss’ job if offered?
I’ve been an assistant for about 4 years now, I love it. I work a little under 40 hours but the flexibility as a single mom of 2 is amazing. The money is not great but currently a sacrifice to be able to be there for my kids in every aspect. My boss is a family member from my ex husband that I adore. She hired me and I’ve loved working with her. She’s been going through an illness now for a few years, I’m going to try to be as vague as possible. A few months ago she was arrested with dv against her ex husband. She kept her job until recently. I guess the ex contacted the very higher ups with her mugshot. They ultimately decided to fire her. She had a court date hoping that her charges would be dismissed but it was not. She’s now taking it trial in a few months. We (including her) that I would temporality step up while she waits. In the meantime I’ve been taking over and it has to not been easy whatsoever. I’m feeling overwhelmed and my afternoons have been taken over. I have a feeling that if her charges stick then I’ll be offered her job permanently. This job is all I know I have no other work experience, no degree. I have gotten a raise since taking over. I’m sick even considering accepting it, I know I’m getting ahead of myself but I want to be prepared for every outcome.

You can stretch yourself and your family to handle the new position if it is offered. Being charged with domestic violence does not affect your friend's ability to do her job. I'm sad that she is being fired instead of getting emotional support or counseling benefits.

It all comes down to what you want to do. I imagine the pay increase will be crazy good, but the workload will too. Is that worth it to you? Do you want to be an assistant under some other person doing a job you are now qualified and doing? If you can’t find joy in your job with more hours, then you might want to consider declining the promotion. Work as assistant or find something else. If you can’t learn to enjoy the position once you get used to it, I’m sure the pay increase will be nice.
As a tip, if you decide to look for another job, you might consider doing it while your pay is at the higher rate, because it will help you get a high rate at another job.

If you don’t take job can you remain as the assistant or will you be pushed out as well? Take the job, sacrifice your afternoons for a while, you’ll have less time with the kids, they will learn to become more independent during this time, leverage your new experience for a new job in 6 months that gives you both the pay & time to live your best life with the best schedule

I mean would they really fire her and bring her back even if the charges are dropped? What's most likely isn't if she feels like she was wrongly terminated, they'd settle it in or outside of court. Not saying it isn’t possible but typically if they would even consider bringing someone back they'd try do something else first like some sort of leave.
Either way I say take the job, especially if you don't know how things will be if someone else comes in and you have to be their assistant. Worst case you try it out and do your best but find out it isn't for you, you at the very least get the experience and you might be able to ask for your old job back. That at least helps to better put your fate in your own hands vs. waiting to see how things will turn out.
Plus I'm not sure how much the pay bump is but if you're doing her work you should make sure you're getting paid for performing her task and job, not something in-between. Maybe not at the same pay she had but should be close to the market rate.

If you’re filling In They dont always keep you but sometime hire someone else anyway. So no need to think ahead just decide if it’s something you want to do or then you can ask to keep your old job. Take it one day at a time.

Take the job. Hire smarter people than you to work for you. Profit.
