Moderator News Wand design competition!

Post image

We are holding a wand design contest!

If you fancy a go at designing a wand for people to see, and possibly win a custom flair for the subreddit, come join us in the discord.

We decided on a wand design rather than wand making so anyone can have a go. You don't need to be able to craft a wand, or even be amazing with a pencil - a simple design will do to enter.

Pretty straightforward - all entrants simply have to draw a wand that fits certain parameters, that will be decided beforehand by a vote from all members.

The winning design will also be chosen by vote, and the winner will be given a custom flair and role, until the next design competition.

Join the DIscord and enter here!

Purpleheart wand

A wand I made for a birthday gift for a friend. Carved using an oscillating spindle sander and the edge of the belt on a belt sander, just like all my other wands. I accidentally made it thinner than intended above the grip, but thankfully since it's purpleheart, it's still incredibly strong for being so thin and it doesn't flex at all. The case is just a one I bought and stained/weathered. Then I hot glued the fabric onto some foam that I cut for the inside. Then I wrote out a quick little wand description to go without it, splashed some coffee on it and burnt the edges to make it weathered as well. Overall I'm pretty satisfied with how it came out. Especially since I thought I had ruined it by making it too thin.

In Progress Project I have no idea what I’m doing

Hi - I just picked up a stick and a pocket knife and that’s how I started. I haven’t looked into wand making but I do have a couple of books on the way to me. I did get wood whittling knives in yesterday. Any tips, pointers, or suggestions for this one are welcome. I am excited to learn and make more.

I just started woodworking for the first time ever, and it was to create a wand for my wife

This is one of the them, I am not really happy with it, so it'll not be the gift she gets for her birthday, I am already working on a different one, longer and straighter. But please let me know your thoughts on it.

Made the stand as well

First one I’ve made. Made this out of rocks/crystals gifted to me by a beloved relative. I’m considering adding wire wrapping. Used oven dry clay to make connecting points to the irregular shapes.

Ti's a stick older than the elder wand, and more potent in magic. Some say it is imbued with the essence of a malevolent and mischievous old deity. In the hands of a magic user it can be powerful. But in the hands of an evil person.... one can only wonder.

I’m happy with the overall idea, and the bark texture is cool. But I didn’t execute it great, so I do want to give it another go soon and hopefully it turns out more like what I pictured.

Hello, all you wandsmiths! I completed a new wand for my collection from a blank of Gaboon ebony wood. I have worked with African hardwoods before, so I knew what I was getting into. This time, I created an elegant handle using a rotary tool and added gold accents using Rub n Buff wax. Suffice it to say this wand came out amazing!

Wandlore (written) Need ideas or suggestions for magical conversions of mundane ingredients

5 Upvotes

So I’m currently formulating a blend of ingredients to use as a finishing wax on my wands. I want to make some fun labels for the finished tins that would feel at home in a magical universe and I need some ideas for magical equivalents of the real world ingredients used. The idea here is that over time a wand, staff, or what have you could become ā€œtiredā€ or less effective with age and this wax would be a product a practicing magical being could buy to keep their magical accoutrements of the wooden variety in good health and repair. So far I have the following…

Beeswax -> Rendered Dragon’s Fat
Tung Oil -> Essence of Yggdrasil
Linseed Oil -> Essence of Dittany
Turpentine -> Distilled Spriggan’s Blood

Does anyone know of any magical flora or fauna that could potentially supply more thematically relevant ingredients? They also don’t necessarily have to come from the same magical world! My above list references Elder Scrolls, Norse mythology, and Harry Potter so I’m open to anything!

The name of the product is ~Waxley’s Wand Wax for the Well Equipped Wizard~ and I even wrote up a little ad/ descriptor

"Have your spells lost their sway? Are your incantations lacking intensity? If these questions ring true, Waxley's Wand Wax is the remedy for you! Crafted from specially selected and naturally sourced components; Waxley's has everything you need to breathe life back into your whimsical wooden instruments and keep them in good repair!ā€

Got the body of the wand finished up and sanded down to 150 grit. 95% of this was done by hand with no power tools beginning from a 1x1x18 square blank and it took positively forever to get here. Next I need to begin carving some channels so the twine wrap has somewhere to settle into. After that I’ll focus on fitting up the quartz point on the end and finally I’ll begin working on the engravings and deeply etched surface texturing. The aim for each wand I make is for it to be better than the last and this one is looking like it’s going to live up that standard. The image I have in my head for this wand is something quite old and full of character, bordering on ancient. A wand that is steeped in the wisdom and power of having been used to perform countless spells and rituals

Finished Wand The Quiet Resolve 🌿🪨

There is a strength that makes itself known long before it is ever tested. It does not demand recognition, nor does it seek to prove what it is capable of. It simply endures, waiting for the moment when standing firm matters more than standing tall.

The Quiet Resolve is drawn to those who carry their convictions without the need to proclaim them. Patient and unassuming, it offers no encouragement to needless conflict—but it does not mistake restraint for weakness either.

When the moment comes to act, its wielder will discover that quiet conviction can move what force alone cannot.

Hey y'all, thanks for the warm welcome, here's a few more wands from my portfolio. Again mostly shaped with belt sander and rotary tool. The Raven bone sculpt has a secret chamber where i hollowed out the dowel between the ebony and holly, and inserted a little piece of Raven father, so that's fun 😁 šŸ¦ā€ā¬›
