Old oak bowl

I was rootling around my wood supplier a while back (big shout out to Gilmer's in Portland, OR - amazing place) and found a couple of 7x7x3" blanks of english oak (Quercus robur) that had come an old tree that was on the grounds of Woburn Abbey back in the old country.

Quite burly and splitty, I decided to pressure-cast the blank in epoxy before turning. I wanted to keep a closed rim to highlight the figure, but a mahoosive catch on the rim meant that the original shape had to be abandoned. Quite like the outcome.

The rim is nicely chunky and bears most of the weight of the bowl. Wall thickness is about a quarter. I was going to do something clever with the bottom but the grain was too pretty to mess with. Finished with carnauba wax. Just a shame that I'm a tit and forgot how to spell Woburn when I signed it...

Walnut Salad Bowl

Twice-turned walnut bowl that I finished up. Rough turned about two years ago, 15" x 4 1/2". I particularly like the figure on the base. I've been in the habit of undercutting rims recently to leave a thicker rim with thinner walls, giving a little bit better of a grip and a heftier appearance.

Large round nose bowl scraper.

I felt $240.00 USD was a bit exorbitant for something that I could make for approximately $30.00 USD and a couple of hours.

Ash handle, 21 1/12" long.

1" copper fitting for a ferrule.

8" x 1 3/8" x 3/8" (approximately) piece of HSS. 200mm x 35mm x 10mm.

1 1/2" ish of tang.

27 1/2" length over all.

And yes, I was just off of my center line when I cut the tang. Works as intended. Still need to adjust the radius some.

Beginner looking to get started. Found this used lathe and am wondering y'alls opinion of it. Asking $500. I want to be able to turn at least 24" legs for a side table I built. Is this a decent lathe? Is it worth $500? What questions should I ask the seller?

Looking for a smaller 4 jaw chuck

I really enjoy making small lidded dishes like the one pictured above. Chuck I have now can only go down to about 1 1/2 inches and I’m looking for something smaller. Any suggestions?

Grinding a new edge on a skew and it was magnetized?

I am restoring a (new to me) set of Craftsman 1965 lathe tools. Just started putting a new edge on the large skew and noticed the filings sticking to the blade as if magnetized. What is going on here?

Juniper snowmen

I will finish them this weekend, add face, buttons, etc. I had never turned the juniper I have growing on my property, some also call it a cedar bush in west Texas. Love the coloring, has a few more work holes than what I wanted, but learning to work with it! Any suggestions on ways to “dress” it up some and integrate the worm holes?

Endgrain-ish elm. Wore me out!

Made this over the past week. Believe this is Chinese elm, I finished it with howards feednwax.

Weird growth pattern on this. I turned it sort of between end grain and side grain because the pith wandered. Had to turn around some shake on this log and it was very odd to balance.

Great challenge, but I'm ready to turn a side grain bowl again!!

I almost ruined it several times when I dropped it (see if you can find the crack), it flew off the Cole Jaws and hit a nearby forstner bit, and a series of other mishaps. It's still not perfect, but it's done!

newbie Help with drill chuck for lathe

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, was hoping to get a bit of help with my new lathe.

I want to get a drill chuck for my tailstock so I can bore out pieces, but my tailstock is threaded and everything I find online seems to use a Morse taper.

Ive attached a picture of my lathe and the tailstock. Ive found a picture of a threaded drill chuck which seems to be exactly what I want but I cant find one anywhere.

Wondering if anyone knows where I can find something like that or an adaptor to allow for accepting other chucks.

If replacing the tailstock is an option as well would love to know what to look out for.

Thanks a heap!

Burnt bowl finish

This is my first attempt at burning the outside of a bowl. I'm pretty happy with the results, it's a lovely Chestnut burr, but I feel like the finish isn't doing the piece justice. I used tung oil inside and out and while the inside looks good, I'm not seeing such a nice finish on the outside.

I'm also aware that the outside needs another sanding to take care of the scratches.

Any tips on what finish would make the charred black wood stand out more? I'm not looking for gloss but some sheen to show off the dark black and grain.

Is anyone here sharpening their own bandsaw blades? What’s your set up? Is it even worth it?

I’m finding bandsaw blades are getting dull relatively quickly on my 14-inch Rockwell bandsaw. I’ve been sawing a lot of really dense cherry lately. I tend to just buy new blades. I’m going through them quicker than I’d like. Haven’t looked into a local sharpening service. Would a service even be economical vs buying new? Interested in what others here are doing.

An unusual badger

Badgers and brushes (shaving or makeup brushes both) are a regular part of my craft (they make terrific gifts among my peeps). This one here I've turned just for myself (people nowadays rarely like these old fashioned handles), and it's the third iteration of the same idea I've been chasing since I started.

I'm really quite happy at the level of detail and how clean they are, and how faithful I stayed to my sketch.

Materials are top to bottom a neodymium magnet, boxwood, buffalo horn, pink ivory, and an Oumo M9 26mm fan knot.

It's assembled with tenons and mortises (the center part is a bead) for structural integrity, glued with epoxy.

If anyone is interested in seeing it made in action you can go to my YouTube channel (@WeatherWaxWorkshops)

Thanks for your attention

newbie Twice Turned Green Wood Cups

After failing to find reasonably priced dry white oak I’ve decided to just use green white oak. I am looking to turn a set of wooden cups for drinking whiskey.

I’ve done a little research on twice turning green wood and was wondering if anyone had any helpful hints.

I also plan on microwaving the rough blanks to speed up the process. I’ve read 30 secs in microwave. Then completely cool an hour or so. Repeat till cup stops dropping weight, indicating no more water loss.

These will ideally be Christmas gifts so that’s why I’m in a time crunch.

Coring Bowl System

Look for a fairly inexpensive coring system preferably between $300-$500 all of these systems are super expensive. Doesn't help I'm 18. But was asked what tools I'd like for Christmas. Also looking for stationary hollow form gouges and scrapers? If anyone has links or places I can purchase from it'd be appreciated. I feel like there's so much stuff, but so much terminology that undermines what I can find online.

newbie Pen Blank Of Pterocarpus indicus

Some woods make an impression through color, while others rely on the complexity of their figure. Amboyna Burl manages to do both. Known for its natural luster, warm golden color, and wild burl cluster, it is a highly regarded material among custom pen makers worldwide.

The addition of spalted lines and dark burl caps in this lot creates a more intricate appearance, with swirling grain and concentrated eyes that make these blanks particularly interesting. The real beauty comes when it is sanded and polished.

🌍 Species: Amboyna Burl (Pterocarpus indicus)

📏 Size: 25 x 25 x 150 mm
