Before saying any other thing I would like to say that I am not someone obsessed with any version. Every one of them have their positive and negative points.
Even this first alpha have some good ideas like matures disciplines and try to give more identity to the clans. That said, there was an error,a core misconception that is the main cause of all the things that made most of the people upset with the alpha.
What vampire is about? Vampire is about personal horror. It is a game of damned people. Vampire isn't a game about heroism, success and awesomeness.
Vampire is about people dealing with a curse that took away their free agency, their life and even their humanity.
Vampire is about fighting with everything against you. You are Damned, you are cursed. You aren't a hero. You are a victim of your own monster.
This is the true spirit of this game. And 6th edition acted against it in a try to gather more audience and made people more comfortable ,like DND did.
I will talk about the problematic mechanics individually and say what makes it problematic in the light of what I said above.
1 humanity; vampire is a game about damnation, not equilibrium. Becoming worse should be easy and becoming better should be a hard uphill battle.
You're damned, you're cursed. Becoming better is hard. You're fighting the curse and receiving God's pardon as you do it. Fighting for your humanity is fighting the curse itself.
Humanity should be easy to lose, hard to get and at the same time it should be a painkiller to the curse.
That is what humanity is in all editions. It is the fucking core of the game. The concept of balance is the exact opposite of the core idea of the game. Literally the worst thing that ever was written about this game.
2 drama and quickening: as I said, vampire is about damnation. Being cursed ISN'T FAIR. Suffering is the whole point of a curse.
The world is against you since you're damned, hell even your own self is against you ,so why give limitations in how the dm can make the curse painful? And why give the players a way to control their own pain and administer their own curse?
If you control your own curse,it isn't a curse. If it is fair ,it isn't a curse,if it is just a tool for you to get what you want, then it is a blessing, not a curse.
Vampire shouldn't be a game about tactics. Vampire shouldn't be about choosing the most optimized decision. It is a game where the true choice is:
a) getting what you want at the price of becoming a monster
b)sacrifice yourself and live fighting your beast to break the curse.
Trying to act in according to reason,in accordance with strategy and in a gay way is EXACTLY what the beast wants .
The salvation is hard. The cost of ambition is damnation. It is the core of this game.
That is the choice. Quickening and drama completely brake this.
The point is: you can't be successful and humane as a vampire. Hell, that exactly why the inconu and people seeking Golconda abandon the jyhad.
That is the choice that the game should give for the players.
In sum, meta currency are about control and controle os EXACTLY what this whole game premises are against.
Yup don't control your future, you're fighting for a lost cause. For a miracle. Or are you embracing damnation?
If they really, really want to give the players a way to succeed in any task,it should be doing something bad. Becoming more and more monstrous.
The game is about a curse. Not about a group of heros being successful in getting their dreams.
That is why I despise meta currency in this game.
Getting more blood, more power, more influence should be something you get delving in darkness.
There isn't something as good success for vampires. Being good is being a martyr. Being human is being a martyr.
Golconda is painful, but its is the only hope. Golconda is almost unobtainable and cost you success, merits and power but it is the only way to lift the curse.
The curse comes from Caine's egotism, from his ego and ambition. Those are the things that we need to abandon to get salvation.
So yeah,to get Golconda you need failure, pain, loss and torment.
You shouldn't run for those things with meta currency.
The worst is your pain, the closer you're of salvation.
The further you dive in success, the closest you're from the total damnations.
That is common in all the editions, and Fighting against that is the sin of the 6th edition alpha.
Vampire isn't a tactical game about wining. It is a narrative game about losing, suffering and keep yourself trying.
It is a game about losing on purpose to save others that doesn't even exist.
You ultimately lose if you choose to keep winning. You ultimately win if you choose to keep losing.
That is vampire, and that isn't a tactical game
