Note From r/VictoriaBC Mods | Election Season 2026 is Upon Us!

Hello everyone, happy double election season 2026!

With both municipal & provincial elections approaching in under a month, this sub will be (and already is) inundated with political content. Please review the following regarding political content in the sub during election season.

  • Be civil & decent to each other, even when in disagreement. Political season is a great time to practice the virtue of disagreeing without being disagreeable. In other words, to respond to an argument rather than attacking someone's character. We will remove content and give out bans when appropriate to keep the discussion civil and constructive.
  • Political posts should be linked to an official, legitimate news outlet or publication. Please avoid self-made political posts, social-media screenshots, rants/raves, etc. There is no lack of political news content, and we'd like to keep discussion based around legitimate coverage to help mitigate the spread of misinformation, and to minimize redundancy.
  • Mind the municipal & provincial distinction re: relevancy to Victoria. We encourage folks to post provincial political content over at r/BritishColumbia and to focus on municipal issues here at r/VictoriaBC. As local & provincial politics do overlap, some provincial content may be appropriate this sub, but in general please keep political content focused on Victoria & region.
  • Posts that break the 'No Editorialized Headlines' rule will be removed regardless of the content or engagement prior to removal. When posting an article, the post title should match the article's headline exactly. Any editorialization, whether intentional or not, will result in the removal of that post.
  • Help us out by reporting rule-breaking content. If you think a post or comment breaks the rules, please report it so we can review the content. Keeping in mind the next rule...
  • Please don't abuse the report function. Disagreement is not a reportable offence - please utilize the downvote button if you disagree with a post or comment. Misusing the report feature breaks Reddit-wide rules, and we report all users who abuse the report function which can lead to site-wide restrictions to one's Reddit account. Thank you for not misusing the report function, we appreciate it.
  • Avoid low-effort posts & comments. We've heard it all before. Save those low-effort one liners for Thanksgiving dinner or Twitter. We'll remove low-effort content in our efforts to maintain civil discourse.
  • No AI-generated content. Any post or comment suspected of being generated by AI will be removed.

The sub's safety & crowd-control features have also been turned up to help filter out content from bots, newer accounts, trolls, brigaders, etc. If you have content removed that you think shouldn't have been, please message the mods and we will review it when we can.

Thanks everyone!

PSA: Stop walking your dogs off leash on the Goose

Especially along the section of the Goose that runs around Vic West/the Gorge.

It is a compressed space full of cyclists, walkers, joggers, and other people walking their dogs on leash. This is not safe, this is not chill. This is not a dog park. This is not your yard.

I have 2 dogs. I love dogs. But when you choose to walk your dog off leash on this path, you are forcing every other person to accommodate you.

And to the man who followed me along the path today with your 100+ pound off leash dog as I carried my chihuahua in my arms in front of you—dick move.

Politics Conservative Platform Relies Heavily On HUGE Economic Growth Beating All Forecasts that is very unlikely says Economist

All economic forecasts for BC is only seeing 0.8-1.5% in the future but conservatives say their policies will "supercharge" the economy blowing passed estimates to nearly 2.5-3.2% by 2029 by their own reading. That is a very unlikely scenario says Ross Hickey, an Economics Professor at UBC Okanagon and doesn't see how he gets there with his promises after ending CleanBC and or reducing permitting times.

Alot of his promises is rhetoric and their estimates would make BC a leader among even advanced economies. BC is an export economy and relies heavily on the world economy. If the world economy is going great then so does BC but if they are failing then BC is on hard times.

Adrian Dix challenged the conservatives on their math with inflated growth and deep healthcare cuts hidden in plain sight. Dix said their costing includes potential healthcare cuts via contigency fund such as unexpected surgeries or wildfire fighting costs.

The fund also pays for wage increases government workers renegotiated during the union contracts

To the person whose bike was put on the 14 Bus and then left without them

To the person whose bike was left on the 14 bus without them:

The bus was number 1245 - I’m sorry about the driver leaving you behind so callously - people were calling out the driver for essentially stealing your bike. I hope you get your bike back. I asked him as I was getting off and he didn’t have a clear answer for me, just said you were probably on the next bus.

Check with campus security when you get to UVic and call BC Transit to report it.

Politics If there is a conservative gov't, you can get bet gov't workers will be mandated back to the office. Alto will be happy

that is a guaranteed if the conservatives win that WFH will be over and sooner or later gov't workers will be mandated back to the office much like those in Ontario. Milobar has been outspoken about this for a long time. it might not be right away but by summer if not sooner. don't know how much office space is left after the NDP sold off many buildings already but this is likely attrition at work here which Doerkson himself used the word in his platform to gut the service and make people quit so they don't pay severance.

one mayor who will be happy to hear this news is Marianne Alto. she'll be jumping for joy over this. she's been begging for this for a long time to have them come back and flood downtown stores. not one of her finest progressive views.

I'm using this statement from 2024 as evident RTO will be on the agenda

The BC NDP government has not announced any plans to mandate civil servants back to work five days a week, but the Opposition says it’s time.

“Time to get back to the workplace, back to collaboration, back to that team atmosphere that really does drive innovation and problem solving,” said B.C. Conservative finance critic Peter Milobar.

“When you have large centres like Victoria or Kamloops, Prince George, Kelowna, Vancouver, Surrey where there’s a lot of government buildings sitting there and the usual pace and workflow sitting empty — there comes a time when you’re seeing this across the country, not just in government, but in other workplaces as well, recognizing it’s time to get back to the workplace.”

In relation to the Public Service here in Victoria this plan proposes a hiring freeze, ministry spending reviews, and billions in additional cuts.

  • Freeze administrative and management hiring, and leave vacancies unfilled as employees retire or depart.
  • Conduct a core review of ministry spending except for ministry of health, ECC, SDPR, CFD, AG, and PSSG.
  • Reduce spending on external consultants by 20%.
  • Restore the Premier's Technology Council.
  • Total proposed spending restraint is 11.74 billion over 4 years

Oh, and nothing in there about WFH. (Reminder: Ontario Premier Doug Ford mandated a full-time return to the office in 2025)

Transit / Traffic Alert As someone who works in the dark most of the year, please wear reflective ANYTHING while walking or cycling…

The darkness will last longer and more traffic will be driving in the dark more frequently. Wear anything that makes you visible. It’s astonishing how often pedestrians just appear on the road wearing nothing but black…

Politics is strategic voting necessary in your riding? this website can tell you!

hi all!

i've seen lots of discussion about strategic voting, and wanted to share a super helpful resource.

votewell.ca shows the projected outcome for each riding, tells you if a strategic vote is necessary, and what the strategic vote would be. for victoria-beacon hill for example, strategic voting is not necessary.

i hope this helps everyone make the best decision for themselves :)

by the way, this is NOT AN AD nor am i affiliated with the website in any way, i just think its a great resource that more people should know about!

Imagery Did you see the meteor? ☄️

At 10:43pm tonight I was driving and caught this on my dashcam facing south. The meteor was moving west to east. Someone was standing on the corner looking in the same direction as I pulled up to the stop sign. I asked if he saw what I saw and he did. No fireworks sounds and I saw it break up at the end.

If you live near Quadra Village / Topaz / Summit Park check around for meteor pieces.

Ryan Painter and David Screech both losing delights me

I know people are burnt out on politics posts, but you have to admit two super-experienced, slick, polished politicians losing to a 73-year-old retiree from Germany who moved here in 2021 is pretty hilarious.

And hey, Volker Dammann scored high on Livable CRD, was a former project manager, and seems pretty soft-spoken and even-tempered. May he do good things!

Looking to hire an artist for cat portraits

Hey artists of Victoria! I'm looking to commission 3 small (no larger than a 4"x6") non-digital portraits of my friend's cats for her birthday coming up in early November. I'm open to different mediums, it's just more if the style aligns with what I have in mind. If you have an insta or other art page where you have examples of your work, please share!

What's Happening? What’s good, lately?

It’s a dang beauty of a day out here, guys! Lots of good dogs out enjoying their sunny walkies, beautiful colours on the leaves, air is crisp and cool.

What is a joy or triumph for you, recently? What are you loving in your neighbourhood? What are you reading/watching/playing/cooking as we hunker down for hibernation?

Savour the sunshine, breathe deep, and take care of each other. 🧡🍁🍂🐿️

Not from the area so turned it into the McDonalds staff on the corner. Manager said she put it in the safe - you'll have to unlock it to retrieve it.

Help Me Find Where can I find this chili oil in Victoria?

I got this from the farmers market on S.S.I. And I’m obsessed with the flavor. I ran out and I’ve tried a few other brands but this was by far my favorite.

Is there somewhere in Victoria that sells these jars? I’m not planning a trip to Salt Spring anytime soon.
