OMYAC Why are we setting off fireworks in October?

I live on fourth plain between Brandt and Falk and almost every night for like the last week I’ve heard one mortar firework (one big boom) go off after like 10pm. Is someone shooting them off to keep the rent low or what? Haha and who’s still got fireworks in October? Is it meth-adjacent activities? 🤔 por que no los tres

Pets: Lost and Found Found cat

Female cat, found near Lieser Neighborhood Park and PeaceHealth hospital. She has been frequenting my house for about two weeks now, and I do not have the recourses to get her to a vet to check for a chip. I’ve posted her on several sites but no hits and there’s no missing posters in my area.

Is anyone able to help me out? If you’re able to pick her up, if you’d like to keep her yourself, resource to an organization that would pick her up for me, anything.

I’ve been giving her food, water, and a box with an old coat but she clearly wants to come inside and I really can’t let her.

The NAUGHTY List

And now... The NAUGHTY List - Let's face it. This is why you are really reading this. What horrible things did the local inspectors find this week? I've arbitrarily chosen 35 demerits as the cutoff so anyone that gets less than 35 demerits isn't going to make the list. I don't want to ding a place unless they got at least a couple major violations or a lot of minor ones. Click on the name if you want to see the inspector's report.

Name Address Inspection Date Dirty Demerits
Camas Market and Bakery 2940 NE EVERETT ST, CAMAS, WA 98607 10/14/2026 50
pho Viet 1817 SE 164th Ave, VANCOUVER, WA 98683 10/12/2026 118

R Street Bites 24415 NE 10TH AV, RIDGEFIELD, WA 98642 10/8/2026 48

The Clark County inspection site is where this information originates. It's a nice community resource. Kudos to the county for making it this easy to check up on things.

Check it out for yourself here: https://inspections.myhealthdepartment.com/clarkcountywa

Demerit points are issued as follows:

Each violation is given a numerical value (2-30) based on its risk of causing food borne illness. Blue violations should be corrected immediately when possible, but generally do not impose an immediate risk to the public. Red violations involving food safety must be corrected immediately. There are 360 possible red points and 88 possible blue points for a total of 448 points. A facility found with 40 or more red violation points is subject to an automatic follow-up inspection. A facility found with 65 or more red violation points is subject to an automatic closure. A facility with 100 or more total red and blue points is also subject to automatic closure.

That's it for now. Hope you'll all have a good week. I'll be back next Friday with another dispatch. In the mean time here's the bonus video:

Bye!

Discussion Ive lived in Vancouver nearly my entire life, here is every conspiracy theory and urban legend I've ever heard for this area. Comment if you have also heard these or even know more!

I have no proof or even any research into any of these. They were all just told me throughout the years starting as a kid.

-Yacolt: I grew up learning it was Native American for Haunted Valley. I was always told that for hundreds of years, every few years, spirits in the surrounding woods would take children away. I also was always told that Yacolt was used by East coast mafia families to send people to hide from either rivals or police.

-Mt St Helens eruption let loose an ancient creature called Bat Squatch. Legend is people saw a big foot like creature with giant bat wings and bat head flying out of the ash cloud the day it erupted and now stalks the forest around the mountain.

- Normal haunted ghost stories about Officers row and the old influenza hospital on Fort Vancouver.

-DB cooper parachuted out over Vancouver then drowned in the Colombia river

-Laura Slocum haunts the Slocum house in Ester Short Park

-There is an Epstein style human trafficking thing going on somewhere near Ridgefield and being covered up by police and powerful people

-The old apostolic Lutherans fly in others members from different states for breeding programs because of local inbreeding

-That weird hotel on hwy 99 (it had a giant light up cross in front of it i think?) was also used for human trafficking

- The Verizon compound in Yacolt is actually some secret government evil program site

Those were the ones off the top of my head that i found interesting!

Question? Cheap but good quality nail salon?

I’m looking for a nail salon in the vancouver or camas area, i’m wanting just a full set of one solid color. The salon I usually go to charges $80 for this and just wondering if there’s a salon that charges in the $60 range? If anyone knows a salon let me know.

Discussion Kauffman Center (abandoned strip mall on the corner of Kauffman/Forth Plain) Promotional Presentation

Here is the promotion deck from Loopnet which essentially zillow for commercial properties

Page 3 just says "Freeway and Transit Crossing Project is already" and that's it.

Page 4 has text written over other text

Page 12 has a MS paint scribble that seems to insinuate people driving north get off I5, drive down 4th plain, take Lincoln Avenue north and then take a non-exist road east of the train tracks north to Hazel Dell instead of simply ... staying on I5. "Returning Portland Commuters" is written across the entire map.

Page 13 is a photocopy of a printed out web page of the Vancouver Farmers market hours from 2013

Page 14 argues why this is a better property for a grocery store than block 10 on west 8th street. (Block 10 West 8th Street has already been developed for 6 years)

Page 15-18 are labeled "Property photos" but literally do not contain a single property photo.

Page 19 contains a screen shot of the website "Meta Jaun News" announcing the highway 99 vine. When I went to their website chrome told me that it was unsafe and could give me a virus.

Page 20 is a google maps result screen shot for "Auto dealerships vancouver"

Page 21 just says "Location" and is otherwise blank.

This isn't just simply a very old deck - there's stuff referencing 2023 included in it. This is a work of art.

Events Indoor trick-or-treat event downtown

Post image
1 Upvotes

Just FYI: The Vancouver Marketplace is doing an indoor trick-or-treat event in n Halloween (for clarity this is not the Vancouver farmer’s market). See attached flyer. This event is in addition to the Main Street trick-or-treat, and the Metropolitan Performing Arts trunk -or-treat. Multiple trick-or-treat events happening in a few blocks of each other could make for a compact candy haul.

BestAround? Manicure / pedicure /nail art recommendation

Thumbnail gallery
28 Upvotes

I like to give credit where credit is due, especially for local businesses who provide excellent services at fair prices. In this case, I'm recommending Anna Nails.

Some photos of the beautiful work Anna's done for my wife are included, as is the setup of her home business. Including the latter because if someone else recommended a service out of someone's house to me, it may give me pause. But Anna's a professional who's been doing this for years and I think her setup reflects this.

Anna used to run V N Nails near the Costco on 72nd & Padden, but is now in business for herself. My wife doesn't trust many people and has a hard time finding services she's comfortable with. So I thought this may resonate with others seeking a good manicure, pedicure, or eyebrows (I was just told this is called facial waxing 😁).

Edit: as requested, a link to Anna Nails Instagram

Politics Mail ballots are arriving.

It won’t be every zip code today, but ballots have begun to arrive today.

You should expect to see yours by Saturday at the latest.

Political ads are also really bad right now, so expect later mail delivery until Election Day.

Events VanWA Makers - next general meeting this Sunday!

Hi Makers! We just sent out the email for the next Makerspace meeting day, and if you're not signed up for that, here's the update:

NEXT MEETING: Sunday, October 18th from 3:30-5:30pm on the Fourth Floor in the Skamania Room at the Vancouver Community Library (910 C St, Vancouver, WA 98660).

UPDATES:

We’re excited to share that VanWa Makers has been granted federal nonprofit status! This is a major milestone for us, and it means we can now accept tax-deductible donations, apply for grants, and build a space that’s open to everyone in our community. We’re still looking for a space. If you know of a building, warehouse, or shop that could be a home for us, or know someone who might, please reach out. Leads and introductions are hugely appreciated. Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to opening our doors.

Community Event: Weekly Community Voice Chat. Every Thursday at 6:00pm on the VanWa Makers Discord. Topics will rotate/update.

Community Event: Lincoln Elementary Garden Classroom Kickoff. Lincoln is beginning work on an outdoor learning space. Some of the VanWa Makers group will be joining the efforts on Sunday, October 18th from 10:00am-12:00pm at Lincoln Elementary (4200 NW Daniels St, Vancouver WA 98660). The goal for this event is to remove sod and place granite for accessible pathways. If you are interesting in joining, please bring your shovel and wheelbarrow (if you have them).

MEETING AGENDA:

Seeking community contacts/referrals for potential locations and partners for the Makerspace.

Makerspace branding discussion & updates.

Core discussion on plans, paperworks, & to do's now that we officially have federal nonprofit status.

And if you'd like to receive the emails and haven't signed up yet, please find the easy links here: https://www.vanwamakers.org/

There’s an informal trick-or-treat event putting together, with a focus on 6th to 15th on Main, with independent events at nearby locations such as the Vancouver Market building and the MPA parking lot trunk-or-treat. More details to be posted as Halloween approaches .
