Release Unraid OS 7.4.0-rc1 Now Available

Thumbnail unraid.net
86 Upvotes

The first 7.4 release candidate is here, focused on visibility and control. Highlights:

  • Docker containers can connect to multiple custom networks (persisting through updates), plus a per-container memory limit field in Advanced View
  • New task tray for background plugin, Docker, and VM operations — queue tasks and reopen them from any browser tab
  • Mover progress and status tracking, and hard links preserved across subfolders of the same share
  • Plugin installs show live progress; update checks run independently so one slow plugin no longer blocks the page
  • Configurable physical power-button actions, working alongside the Dynamix System Buttons plugin
  • Expanded Intel, MediaTek, and Realtek wireless support, plus support for running under Hyper-V
  • Security: OpenTerminal input validation, public IPv6 addresses anonymized in diagnostics, and certificate verification restored for public notification agents
  • Kernel updated to 6.18.54-Unraid, Docker 29.8.2, ZFS 2.4.4 — same base packages as 7.3.3

BIG Thanks to community contributors junkerderprovinz, Mainfrezzer, Joly0, chodeus, and Sacred-Shadow.

Windows VM or dedicated system for secondary computer?

• Upvotes

I'm trying to figure out what would be better.

My urnaid system has a windows VM ( running on its own m.2 ssd ) that I use for things I don't want to use my main PC for, some LLM stuff, tinkering, basically a sandbox system. My server runs 24/7 so its pretty easy to jump in and out of the VM when needed.

I also have a different pc that spec wize is about the same performance , but a physical system, so less risk of breaking my unraid system, but its also a system I could sell for some decent cash to put into some other hobbies, or finally upgrading my ancient montior with a fancy OLED one.

Another - best cache setup?

Just started using Unraid (coming from long time with OMV) and want to make it as good as possible for my use case.

What I have
- 36TB array (4 drives)
- 2x120gb SSD (willing to buy new 256gb if this helps)
- 2x500gb SSD

What I want to run
- Plex + usual *rr setup
- Home Assistant in vm
- Torrents (+long term seeding)

My main priority is really low downtime on Home assistant.
Tried to look around here and ask AI. Most seem to suggest 500gb in mirrored for appdata. But isn’t that a waste of space? My docker drive in OMV was around 50gb. Another challenge is that i only have 6x SATA ports.

What would you do in this case?

What is the best way to do a backup on Unraid?

I am currently using Duplicati to backup my movies share on Unraid to another backup location. It took me 2 weeks to complete the backup. As far as I can see, Duplicati did the job. It only took time, but that is not abnormal for a first (full)backup. The only thing noted is that Duplicati is cutting the backup into smaller chunks of 1GB (my settings), compared with how Synology Hyper Backup does it (one big image file). Are there other better tools to backup data from Unraid, or is my choice not a bad choice?

From time to time I get some errors, then I have to scrub and delete some stuff...but otherwise they just work.

Why was the AI in Unraid post removed?

The Mod Team removed the "Hook up Claude to unRaid" thread? Why?
That was a good thread. How does that violate rules 1-5? I didn't make the thread, but I was interested in it.

UPS Connection Drop - Should I be worried?

I have a Eaton Tripp Lite SMART1500LCD 1500VA - it looks like is experiencing connection drops. I switched USB ports (back of mobo) and they have decreased so far, but is this something I should worry about in terms of clean shutdowns, etc?

Thanks!

Has there been any progress for Intel Arc cards running VMs on 7.3.3 or 7.4?

Has anyone tested running Arc cards using passthrough to VMs with the latest Unraid version (7.3.3 an 7.4.0) and had success?

I have had to temporarily repurpose my testing server for something else which makes me unable to test if these issues have been resolved.

I'm specifically talking about these issues - booting to black screen or sound issues:

What happens if I rename a folder the same as an existing folder..??

I haven’t tried it yet but… in Windows it basically combines the two folders and eliminates one. Which I would prefer to do

Same 2 parity errors every month. is the ASM1166 writing a backup GPT in the wrong place?

My monthly check always finds exactly 2 errors, sectors 3131110472 and 3131110504. A correcting check clears them, the next reboot brings them back. SMART is clean.

So far, I found (with a little bit of help from Claude) that dd on those blocks shows a GPT backup header and partition entry on all 4 disks.

Also that, since disks are 6 TB, backup GPT should be at LBA 11721045135-11721045167. Mod 2^32 that’s 3131110543-3131110575, which matches my 2 blocks after the 64 sector partition offset.

And the real GPT at the end of the disk is fine and all array disks are on the onboard ASM1166

So the actual theory is that something at boot (I suspect the ASM1166 UEFI option ROM) rewrites the backup GPT using a 32-bit LBA, straight to the raw disks, inside the XFS partition.

Does that sound right, or is there another explanation for a GPT showing up at a truncated LBA?

Could it be the BIOS itself rather than the controller ROM?

Note that I found ~16 KB corrupted inside one file per data disk (xfs_io fsmap). I left those files where they are so nothing new gets allocated there, and my plan is to just ignore those 2 errors.

Reasonable, or am I missing something?

Thanks for your help on this matter.

Unraid 8 Q&A with Alex & Eli: Licensing, Fedora/UCore Transition, UI Wizards, Testing, and More!

Alex (aka Ironic Badger) and Eli (Head of Product at Unraid) recently answered community questions from Reddit regarding the upcoming Unraid 8 release.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YokafZ9WVeI

Here are the key takeaways:

Licensing

  • Zero changes are coming to existing or new licenses. Basic, Pro, Lifetime, and activation codes remain fully valid, preserving community trust.

Fedora & Universal Blue (UCore)

  • Unraid 8 shifts from Slackware to a lightweight, immutable base distro powered by Fedora.
  • Expect faster boot times (under 30 seconds), kernel swapping choices, ZFS snapshot-based updates via GRUB for easy rollbacks, and optional Secure Boot.

Plugins & Developers

  • Transitioning to an API-driven, modular system with configuration builders and Home Assistant-style permission guardrails.
  • Dedicated developer documentation and official code samples will make migration and custom creation seamless.

Apps, Docker Compose & VMs

  • Existing apps and VMs will carry over with zero functional regressions.
  • Adds native, front-and-center Docker Compose support alongside a live-previewing VM XML editor.

Security & Authentication

  • Containers and VMs will no longer run as root by default (moving to QEMU/non-root users) to counter modern AI-era threats.
  • Integrates Traefik as a reverse proxy, bringing out-of-the-box OIDC support, with passkeys planned for later point releases.

UI, Drive Management & Testing

  • New step-by-step UI wizards will guide users through stressful tasks like drive replacements and parity rebuilding.
  • Backed by a brand-new QA department running thousands of automated unit and end-to-end tests.
  • A private alpha is launching soon, followed by a public beta targeted for early next year.

Should I use my external 4TB USB drive as external media drive or backup for NAS?

My setup is Unraid with two 4TB M.2 NVMe SSDs in a ZFS mirror for my data pool (tank), plus a separate 2TB NVMe pool for apps.
I work with a lot of large video files for AI video editing and don’t want them taking up space on my PC’s C: drive. Currently, I store them on a 4TB Samsung T7 connected directly to my PC via USB-C/USB4.
My PC can connect to the NAS over Ethernet at up to 5Gbps.
I’m trying to decide between two workflows:
Use the Samsung T7 as a backup for important files on the NAS, and work directly from an SMB share on the NAS.
Keep the T7 connected to my PC as the working media drive, then use Unraid’s Mover or another scheduled process to copy the files to my ZFS mirror.
Would working directly from the NAS over 5GbE be fast enough for large AI video projects? Or would I be better off keeping the files on the T7 and backing them up to the NAS?
How would you set this up?

Lost a disk. Array is good thanks to parity. Need some advice on replacing failed HDD.

Hey guys. I'm on Unraid 7.0.0 (Yeah, I know - I just haven't had an upgrade go well so I haven't done it in a while).

My server consisted of four 6TB Seagate IronWolf drives and an SSD cache drive.
One of the 6TB drives is parity, the other are data drives.
This morning I lost one of the 6TB data drives. I tried swapping SATA and power cables but no luck. I get the old death-click on POST and the BIOS says that SATA slot is empty so she's dead.

I have an 8TB drive lying around so I think I'll use that - and you can probably see where this question is going now.

The parity drive needs to be the largest hard drive so I can't simply replace the failed 6TB drive with an 8TB drive.

As I'm typing this out I'm realizing that I probably need to add the 8TB as a 2nd parity drive, wait for the array re-build, then change the 6TB parity drive to a data drive.
That'll leave me with three 6TB data drives (as it was before) and an 8TB data parity drive.

Is this the way to go? Any gotchas I need to know about?

Edit/Update: This is irrelevant to the issue but just wanted to add this anecdote.
After trying to use the 8TB drive (WD Red) in Unraid it's coming back to me as to why I have it lying around. A couple years ago I had an issue with my desktop PC where it would no longer boot past the BIOS screen. I started taking things out one by one and tried to boot. Once I took out this 8TB drive, the PC booted. Put it back in, PC wouldn't boot. I then put the drive in an external USB 3.0 enclosure and it worked fine as an external drive.
Before putting it in my Unraid server, I vaguely recalled having some kind of issue with the drive so I downloaded WD's diagnostics software (WD Kitfox) and checked it. It passed the quick test so I went ahead and tried it in the Unraid server and faced the issue I had in another PC - it wouldn't boot past the BIOS screen. Then it started to come back to me about the problems I had before.
I'm guessing there's some kind of short in the power or SATA connection on the drive. Externally, the pins all look fine. I have a molex power to SATA power adapters lying around so I think I'll try using that to see if it fixes the boot issue.
Before I do that, though, it's probably prudent to go ahead and run the comprehensive tests in WD Kitfox and see if it tells me what the issue really is.

How do I undo a Docker container update?

I've had problems with Frigate where it chews up all available memory (96GB) on my Unraid server. Lately it's been running fine with no issues (for at least a month), which I attribute to the previous update fixing whatever the problem was. Day before yesterday I was notified that there was an update for the Frigate container, so I ran it, and now the memory problems are back... container crashed within a couple hours. How do I go back to the previous update? I read a thread that tells me to go to the maintainer website and choose the tagged image version I want, but it looks like there's a new tagged version every few minutes, so I have no idea which one I'm supposed to choose. Any help?

New build after 10 years. Where to start?

My current setup is about 10 years old now, including the day one drives, so it's time for an update. The current server is a i5-3470, 8gb RAM and 12TB.

I picked up a brand new TERRAMASTER F4-424 Pro very cheaply. I've also got two Seagate EXOS X18 14TB drives going into it (1 for parity, 1 for storage) with the intent to expand in the future. I've also picked up a 1TB M2 for the cache drive.

I'm looking to put it all together this weekend but given how long it's been since I setup my first server, I'm sure times have changed. Where should I be reading or watching to learn how to beat configure the new build? I know SpaceInvaderOne was the goat back in the day.

My intent is also to setup the new server on a trial licence, boot both servers side by side to transfer data over, power down the old faithful for good and then transfer it's licence over. Any issues with that?

Server is pingable and that is it

My server was working well last night with no issues.

Today I went into Plex and the server is visible with all my media I went in and attempted to play some of it but there is a playback error when trying to play the media.

I attempted to go into the WebUI for Unraid and it cannot connect to the server, it is pingable via terminal tho.

I restarted my router with no resolution as well.

What should be my order of operations to resolve this and diagnose the issue?

Thank you!

spare 1tb 2.5" ssd. Ideas?

I have a spare 1tb 2.5" ssd that i'm looking for ideas on what to do with it.

My unraid server already has 2 m.2 1tb cache drives, one as a backup, and my main array is 96tb of storage.

I have an additional m.2 ssd for VM's

Just trying to think of some ideas of what I can use this for, otherwise I'll put it in my PC as a downloads folder dump or something. ( If anyone has any ideas for my main pc )

Thanks!

NVMe cache drive drops off the bus every boot since 7.3.0 → 7.3.3, persists after rollback

Post image
8 Upvotes

Updated Unraid 7.3.0 → 7.3.3 this morning. Since then, one of my two WD_BLACK SN7100 1TB drives (btrfs RAID1 cache, firmware 7615M0WD) disappears about 1 minute after the pool mounts, on every boot:

nvme nvme1: controller is down; will reset: CSTS=0xffffffff → Disabling device after reset failure: -19

  • Rolled back to 7.3.0: still happens.
  • Booted with nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 pcie_aspm=off pcie_port_pm=off: no change.
  • The identical twin drive is fine. The failing one is in the chipset M.2 slot (MSI PRO B760-P WIFI DDR4, BIOS 1.F0), the good one in the CPU slot.
  • SMART on the failing drive: PASSED, 2 media errors, no PCIe AER errors logged.

It was 100% stable before the update. Has anyone seen an update leave an NVMe drive in a state that survives a downgrade, or SN7100 dropouts on 6.18 kernels? Thanks!

UPDATE 7.3.3 broke my RT8127 10Gb network

after updating my dockers i updated UNraid from 7.3.2 to 7.3.3.

after reboot my ETH0 was gone and i had no connection to my server.

Had to reinstall the rt8127 drivers. Setup my Eth0 from scratch.
i use one of those pcie4.0 x1 10Gb SFP+ cards.

it works now but damn. Can the RT8127 driver be added to the kernel??
