Question What upgrades can I make that will have the most impact?

• Upvotes

Curent set up:

- Technics SL-1200 MK5

- Audio Technica VM95ML

- KAB TD-1200 Tonearm Fluid damper

- Fosi X5 Phono Preamp

- Fosi ZP3 Preamp

- RCF NX 12-SMA active speakers (https://www.rcf.it/en/products/product-detail/nx-12-sma)

To my ears, it sounds really good as it is. I just can't help feeling like there are ways to make it sound even better. Whatcha got for me?

I need an upgrade

• Upvotes

I have about 500 records and a fairly crappy Audio Technica turntable connection via a jack cable to a Bose 500;smart speaker.

From working in bars when I was younger and filling in when the DJ was too high /drunk I've always had a soft spot for a turntable. I really don't know where to start though

I live in Cologne Germany and am on the lookout for a whole new setup, preferably all buy for life and second hand but am open to suggestions.

Any advice on turntable model, amp and speakers? My budget is about 2k but would happily keep it below 1k.

Help Turntable/amplifier sounds distorted

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello, about a week ago I made the mistake of plugging my CD-player into the phono input on my amp (NAD C 316BEE), and I’m scared it may have damaged it because now anything I play on my turntable sounds noticeably distorted. It sounded fine before that, so it’s probably not the turntable. Other inputs sound good as well. Have I ruined my amplifier and can I fix it? Or is there something else I haven’t considered?

Need help determining if my AT-LP120XUSB stylus is damaged or not

Hi guys,

I need assistance determining if this stylus from my AT-LP120XUSB turntable is crooked or not, it appears to lean slightly towards the right, but the stylus itself isnt bent, it plays records just fine.

I'm relatively new to the game so i'd like some opinions about if i should seek out a replacement or if my records are in danger if i keep it running that way.

Thanks in advance.

Help Vintage philips turntable not playing anymore

Hello guys I have an old hifi tower lets say with a Philips midi belt drive turntable.

Suddenly my turntable doesnt produce any sound anymore tho. Its nothing wrong with the boxes (radio plays just fine) so its really the turntable itself.

I have no idea what i can do to fix it, if i play the record i hear the music suepr softly from the LP itself but its just not going tru the boxes.

Anyone has an idea? The only thing i can say is the top right corner of the turntable i can "push it a bit up and down" do maybe something came loose, or maybe this was all the time and has nothing to do with it. (English not my first language not sure how to explain this)

Thanks for help

I just received this record in the mail today, it’s second hand from discogs and when it arrived i found out that it was bent after I opened it. Is there any way that I can flatten it out to restore the quality or should i just get a refund?

Question Turntable decision

Hi everyone, I’ve been looking to upgrade my turntable for a while now. I had pretty much settled on the Pro-Ject Debut Reference 10 (around 1 230 eur new in my country), but I’ve now been offered a used Rega Planar 6 with an Ania Pro MC cartridge for around 1 150 eur.
The Rega is six years old, but according to the seller, both the turntable and cartridge have only had a few dozen hours of use.
Which of the two would you go for? Thanks so much for any advice.

RT85 Disaster?

I just upgraded from an entry level Sony Turntable to a Fluance RT85 that came in the mail yesterday. Was testing in out last night and tonight with a number of records (all new vinyl) and it sounded fantastic until suddenly it didn’t. Probably had done about 2-3 hours of play time before it suddenly sounded horrendous.

I was playing a new vinyl that had admittedly gotten pretty dusty. Cleaned it with a silk brush and “Big Fudge” cleaner spray. First track sounded good and then out of the blue the 2nd track sounded suspiciously bad. Like, distortion, and static, and vocals sounding like they were filtered through the ass end of a drive-thru speaker. Gave it another clean: still awful. Flipped to the other side: no better.

After this I cleaned the 2M Blue
stylus with a regular cleaning brush (from Boundless Audio) and put on the record I had listened to previously and had sounded fantastic 40mins ago: sounded unbelievably awful.

I’ve disconnected and reconnected the headshell to the tonearm, checked all my cables are connected, checked that’s it’s not the speakers… everything my apparently ignorant mind can think of. I have no idea how this got so wrecked in a mere few hours of use. Is the cartridge misaligned? That seems improbable as it’s the factory cart and how could it get misaligned in the middle of playback?

I have the turntable running through an iFi Zen phono preamp and the tracking force set to 1.9g which is within the manufacturers range, if slightly above the recommended 1.8g.

Apologies for my relative ignorance, as I’m posting first time out of late-night desperation. I also apologize if this is the wrong sub to be posting to. Long time Reddit reader and first time poster. Please redirect if I’m in the wrong place.

Question Fluctuating Sibilance/Mix

Hello everyone,

Need some help figuring out whats going on with my Fluance RT80. I've had this table for close to 10 years-- never had any issues with it and took decent care of it.

Up until today I've been playing records with the stock cartridge, using an acrylic mat for maybe 5 or so years.

Lately, on multiple records that otherwise played fine on a number of occasions in years past, ive noticed that the sound has been sounding off. During playback, the sound sporadically leans toward high sibilance, and sometimes dip into a muddied mix. Other times it will sound great like it usually does.

This will happen a handful of times in a given record. The pitch itself remains the same (or not noticeably different). It doesn't play faster or slower-- it just sounds like someone occasionally messing with an EQ; punching the high-end and then leveling everything to 0.

Ive readjusted my tonearm, but the issue remains. Today, I upgraded to a AT-VM95E/H and swapped to my prior rubber mat hoping this would fix my issue, but to no avail.

Though ive been using my turntable for many years, im not too technically versed in its mechanisms, so I figured maybe I could find some help here.

Here's my setup:

Table: Fluance RT80

Pre-Amp: Onkyo Integra P-3030

Amplifier: Onkyo Integra M-5030

Speakers: Fluance SX6

I could provide video for whatever thats worth if its needed, but I think my description of whats happening is pretty on the nose. Thanks in advance.

Suggestions Looking for an upgrade on my preamp

I recently acquired a pioneer pl-560 (the Grey plastic model that for some ascenine reason shares its name with the much better vintage model)

I paired it with a pro-ject phono box e and have been pretty happy with it so far. I've recently given my speakers a big overhaul however, going from a kinda shitty Logitech z623 system to an aiyima a20 Powering majority d70x passives (I kept the Logitech sub tho).

Now I find the vinyls sounding a little flat compared to the other things going into it. The central piece in my setup atm is a ta-22 hybrid tube amp which preamps everything before distributing it so I have 12AU7 Tubes in the chain.

So far I've been looking at the schiit mani 2 or the ifi zen phono 3, but I'm also open to other suggestions in that general Lower midtier price range to add some dynamic Rang to my setup.

Question Recommendations for my setup

I’m ordering a LP120XUSB turntable from audio technica.

My question is what speakers would work best with this setup. Maybe I haven’t looked hard enough or I’m not experienced enough to know what I’m doing but I can’t seem to find anything under 300-350. Is it silly to even try to find something quality for this price or is there something out there that works with this turntable well? Please give me a recommendations. I really need them!

I’m a big fan of speakers with stands just because the table I plan on putting the turntable on, doesn’t have another spot for speakers. I’ve heard it’s best to put them on a different shelf because it has a possibility of rattling the turntable and affecting the quality. Am I correct? Please let me know!

Help Audio-Technica AT-LP60XUSB: platter won't spin, tonearm won't move, and motor keeps running after pressing stop

i recently moved house and am resetting up my turntable but it wont work. please help !!

- when I press start, the platter doesn't spin but

yhe small gold-coloured motor pulley spins bht i can hear the belt squealing against the pulley?

- when I press stop, the motor pulley continues spinning until I unplug the turntable

- pressing stop doesn't make the tonearm go back to its resting position

- when I rotate the platter by hand, the tonearm moves and lowers so im thinking its an issue with the actual motor or something???

- when plugged in, the motor starts again sometimes without pressing anytbing

- the belt fell off when i moved house but i put it back, i cant tell if its loose but im assuming so as it keeps slipping and wont stay high up enough on the pulley?

Im thinking that the belt is loose but does that cause the platter to not move AT ALL? Also would a loose belt explain the stop and start buttons not really working or is this a motor issue?

thank you, sorry i sound so clueless :(

Buzzing/Whirring Sound Normal?

Hey all. This is my Fisher Audio Component System MC-705 that I got a few months ago. It seems to work just fine (aside from the cassette deck needing to be fixed and the turntable spinning slightly too fast) and I've enjoyed using it a lot. But I've always wondered about this buzzing/whirring noise coming from the system. Not sure if it's the turntable, cassette deck, or something else, or if it's even normal at all. Should I be concerned about this?

Please help a beginner choose a vintage turntable (Technics vs Pioneer vs ?)

I'm a beginner when it comes to turntables. I've had one of those 6-in-1 Victrola units for around 10 years (it was a gift) before finally doing some reading and deciding I'd like an actual setup to play my records.

I was nudged towards a vintage setup, and recently picked up a Harmon Kardon 330B for a good price. I might have speakers from a family member who bought a pair decades ago and never used them, but I need some help with the turntable.

There's a few on FB marketplace in my area, mostly between $200-$500, but these are the 4 I keep coming back to:

Technics SL-D2 (serviced, $380)

Technics 6710 (serviced, $279)

Technics SL-Q350 (needs new needle, but stated as working, $225)

Pioneer PL-518 (stated as working, $200)

I've been going in circles reading posts on this subreddit to try and research, so I thought I'd try asking.

Are any of these reasonable, given the current state of prices? I'm definitely not an audiophile, but I'd like something decently reliable.
