Shoe Recs For Heavy Supinators

• Upvotes

I supinate pretty badly, and it causes me a bunch of issues, so finding the right shoe has been rough

The Mount to Coast H1 worked super well for me. It’s the best shoe I’ve found so far. I recently got the Mount to Coast M1, and it’s not working for me at all. I think it’s the extra bouncy sole, which seems to make my foot roll out even more.

What I’m looking for:

  • Trail: Something similar to the H1 but with bigger lugs

The thing I noticed that makes it (h1) work is the soft sole almost collapses under the weight of my bad stride; therefore, it doesn't snap my foot down.

Any recommendations?

I'd like to find "after" photos of completely healed permanent toenail removal surgeries. This is specific to hikers/runners/sports (no problems with ingrown nails). It's hard to find photos that aren't from ingrown nail surgery, and harder yet to find photos of healed toes other than the big toe.

Trail Run between Milford and Salt Lake City

I am traveling to Milford, Utah for work. I am flying into Salt Lake City and driving down to Milford. On the way back the following day, I would love to find a nice trail for a run before heading back to Salt Lake. Anyone have suggestions for a nice trail on which I can get a 5- to 10-mile run. I know there are plenty of trails around Salt Lake City, but it will be late by the time I get back there and would like a daytime run. Thanks in advance.

Pegasus Trail 5 damage - normal wear?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve had two pairs of Nike Pegasus Trail 5 and both have developed the same damage on the sides of the upper (see photo). I use them for hiking and trail running and daily when traveling.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a fit issue, normal wear from flexing or a durability problem?
I haven't noticed this in my other running shoes, only at a pair of Adidas I've had but I've ran 1700km in them.

Waterproof Wide Shoe Options

I have a wide forefoot, a high instep and arch. I live in the Western PNW and am looking for a wet weather, muddy trail winter shoe. I can’t do zero drop shoes, so Altra is off the table.

What else y’all got?

Just want to dispell some misconceptions about this little corner of the world.

SEI is a treasure for single track and preserved spaces. Yeah our neighbors up north get weird AF.

But we are only associated by zip code...

Need advise on how to deal with changing terrain. Road to park, off trail (?)

I've only just completed my second short run, and albeit me saying two days ago that I hate running, I figured that I need waterproof running shoes that can deal with running up and down some grassy slopes in the park if I want to keep going and be gentle on my joints (more fun too btw). That said, I also need to get to said park, which is about 0.7 miles away. I've read that trail running shoes wear off on concrete, and I also do not want to slip on wet leafy streets when jogging to the park.

So, my question is: Should I buy a rucksack for dedicated trail running shoes, or can trail running shoes handle short distances on concrete?

I've come across trainers that try to bridge the gap (Hoka Challenger / Brooks Cascadia), but I'm not sure if they can handle grassy slopes and muddy bits.

Open to recommendations, ideally wide fit 😅

Portland, Oregon

I'll be in Portland, OR for 4 days for work. Looking up on alltrails.com, I found tons of amazing trails to check out.

Since I'll be staying with friends across the Columbia in Vancouver, I was wondering what would you recommend in a radius of a 20 minutes drive?

The weather looks ideal btw. You guys are lucky.

PS: I'd happy with scenic routes in the city as well.

A 5-ish (closer to 6) mile race with 1200 feet of ascent. That's probably not much compared to other places, but for Illinois it's by far the hilliest I've ever done. Lots of walking and climbing, but sooo much fun.

Zero-Gravity Chairs

I’ve noticed while watching the backyard ultra livestreams, a lot of athletes use the “zero-gravity” chairs. A lot of different brands and price ranges come up on Google…

Anyone have a recommendation?

Burley D'lite jogger kit for trail runs

Does anyone have experience with the Burley D'lite jogger kit for moderately rough trail running? The trailer is great for biking, but the rinkydink front wheel gets swallowed by roots and rocks all the time when I've tried trail running. The jogger kit comes with a bigger 20" bike wheel but it's completely static, so I wonder how annoying it is to try turning through twisty trails with it?

What’s the nicest town on a Metro North line (for trail runners!)

I asked this question in another subreddit, but figured I'd get a bit more specific with this crowd:

We're big trail runners so just having "outdoor access" is a bit of a red herring: we want trails with up and down stuff and places to let the stoke fly within a ~2 hour train ride from New York for commuting purposes.

Curious if anyone in here has any experiences/suggestions! (FYI we're currently in Western Mass, which is fantastic, but job stuff may require us to be a little more conveniently located to NYC).

3rd time is a charm

Had a successful third 50K. Same race 2 years ago was my first 50K. Underestimated the training required (specifically strength training) and hit a wall of depression a couple weeks before the race, and didn't run for 2 weeks leading into the race. I destroyed my quads before the last loooong descent and ended up death marching the last several miles to the end. I finished, but nowhere near a time I had hoped for.

Second 50K, I had heinous gut issues for the middle 20 miles that made just walking downhill a miserably painful experience. I finished, but with a little disappointment that I wasnt able to give it a full effort. I also crashed my bike 3 days before and had quite a hip bruise. I didnt notice it during the run. Maybe due to the gut pain. Maybe because it wasn't a factor. Either way, it wasn't the result i was hoping for.

Yesterday was a repeat of the same 50K from 2 years ago (in my hometown). Training was much better (i did actual strength training, loads of hill repeats, and honed my downhill running). I also had a much better strategy with the experience of a couple 50s under my belt. I way under fueled in the last 5 miles but overall, super pumped about the results.

Any recommendations for mens windproof overpant? Worn over shorts or tights for high summits. Stashable. Ankle zips or poppers. Waist drawcord. Not looking for waterproofs.

Headlamp on a budget

Hi there. I'm looking for a universal headlamp on a budget for hiking and running. I had HL900 from Decathlon, which costs 45 euros at the moment. I'd say it ticks all the boxes as it has removable battery and an adapter for AAA batteries, so basically if you're in a pinch, you can swap rechargable battery with pair of AAAs. It also has an option to tilt down, so at least for me it was a nice thing to shine the light downwards and not blast someone's face on accident. The thing is - I lost the head lamp and I'm thinking is there a better alternative for this price point? Main downside for me was that for running it felt a bit heavy and I had to strap it a bit harder, which didn't feel that comfortable.

If you built a home gym specifically for trail running, what would you prioritize?

I've been thinking about how to set up a home gym that actually supports trail running without taking over the whole garage.

Would you prioritize adjustable dumbbells, a rack and barbell, a step-up platform, or something for single-leg work and balance? I'm more interested in equipment that serves a clear purpose than buying a little bit of everything.

For trail runners who train at home, what equipment has earned its space, and what turned out to be unnecessary?

Via Valais

Have seen a few posts from previous years about the Via Valais, but figured I’d add on. Covered the 9 stage agenda over 8 days. Pretty much followed the itinerary to a T along with a bunch of the bonus peaks.
The AlpsInsight website was great in regard to details like gear lists and such so I won’t dive in too much. I’ve seen people say just bring a waterproof jacket and skip the wind breaker. I brought both and used both. I run way too hot in a true waterproof shell so I spent most mornings in a light wind breaker that would have failed in the downpour I got stuck in. Cut grams elsewhere. Final thing, the BD distance 18 is trash.
The biggest hurdle was I went in late August and the glacier collapse risk resulted in detours when you got closer to Zermatt/Randa. Google struggled to translate the signs at closures so I did not know if it was a warning or a closure.
The SwissTopo app is so impressive. It had the closure details and was helpful in finding alternative options.
I went solo and encountered so few people outside of 2 or 3 spots. Coming from Denver, this was surprising, but really cool.
If I were to make a recommendation to future parties, I think back tracking to Zinal from Cabane de Moiry by way of Corne de Sorebois is a waste of time compared to terrain that you can tack on by ascending Col du Pigne and then heading towards Cabane du Mountet. The glacier de Zinal was some of the coolest looking terrain and my regret was not going for it.
