Needed a cedar chest, was debating how much money I’d need to pay for a good one… found a 1940s beauty for free!
First two pictures are where it’s settled for now, outdoor pictures are during cleanup, and the last ones are what was inside when I got it.
Good amount of work to get it usable again (full of scratches and scrapes, inner tray and bottom drawer were both broken) - but certainly worth my time for such a beautiful thing!
Listed at $0 on Nextdoor. Not listed as “FREE”, listed at a price of $0.00 - thought it was a mistake, or one of those annoying “make me an offer” things. Nope! Just cost me exactly $0.00.
(Before anyone asks - no, I do not have small children in the house that could lock themselves inside. No, the key I found rattling around does not go to that lock, the correct key is still in the envelope.)

What's your history with thrifting
My mother grew up very poor in the 50s, so she would go thrifting with her mom. Most people only used thrift stores at that time. If they were indeed very poor. My mother met my father as teenagers and then got married. He made good money and my mother did not need to go thrift shopping anymore out of necessity, but she still did it anyways.
So when I was a kid in the 80s, I used to be so excited when mom would take me to goodwill, despite knowing that it was for poor people..., (according to society). But I couldn't believe all this cool stuff was donated because people didn't want it anymore. And now I could pick it up for .25 cents.
As an adult in my late 40s, I have used thrift store shopping since high school in the 90s and have used it to decorate any new space I move into. I use it for gift shopping. 90% of what I own is secondhand. I love having something unique... i have a really eclectic wardrobe, and I get a lot of compliments on it. I tell them it takes years of thrifting, to collect enough, really cool pieces to have a fantastic, put together wardrobe because it it's all mis-matched from different decades and unique rare pieces.
I prefer to help the planet. Not purchasing more things. You're saving money is the biggest bonus. It's a fun hobby because many people enjoy tinkering around looking at all kinds of mixed up odds and ends that are available for sale that have a history before you even got to them.
I have a maximalist, home, and when you come in, it's like walking into a curiosity shop, Its decades of collecting treasures...I love it's vibe and I've done it inexpensive and over time.
For The past 20 years, my 80 year old mom and I have gone thrifting weekly.
I'm curious what's your history with thrifting???

I live in the Denver area and am so sick of the big box thrift stores. Are there any church thrift stores or smaller independent shops to check out?

Vintage beaded leopard print backless dress NWT in exactly my size
The Goodwill dressing rooms were closed so I had to guess on sizing and EVERYTHING in the haul for me perfectly (except for the excellent condition Kate spade heels, which I got for a friend). But this specific dress was the absolute standout for me omg!!!

NWT Laura Biagiotti 100% Silk Scarf for $5.69!
I was looking for a nice scarf to tie on one of my bags because I've always liked the look, and I ended up finding this treasure. Brand new with tags still attached and for under $6!
I'm not sure how much this scarf is actually worth, but I know it's more than I paid for it 😆

accidentally purchased ashes in necklace, what to do?
i bought a crystal necklace at value village when visiting a different town, it’s one of those perfume/oil crystal bottles, or so i thought. i opened it up in the store, it seemed empty but when i got back to my house and opened the bottle, ashes fell out of it. i want to be respectful but this is the first time this has ever happened so i’m not exactly sure how to respectfully dispose of them, any advice is appreciated!
