Ever since i have had conscious thoughts, i have been afraid of death. My first realisation what nonexistence encompasses came about when my grandfather died when i was 9 years old. I'm 31 now and i have had anxiety attacks in the middle of the night ever since (on about 5-10 ocassions per year). I find myself ruminating over nonexistence, counting the potential years i have left, avoiding certain topics (such as the universe and its boundaries) and sometimes even feeling relief(?) after not having died in accidents (this feels really cynical), heatwaves or other catastrophes shown in media. Totally unproductive and self-reinforcing.
Recently i have started therapy for ADHD, low self esteem and a bad acess to my emotions. These all turned out to be interconnected with my fear of death, which, as of my current hypothesis, seems to be a fear of (wrong) decisions and not being able to rectify them afterwards, feeling remorse for them etc. (Like: do i want children? What career path did i choose and so on) Low self esteem -> no confident decision making -> nothing happens, lifetime passes and eventually runs out. So for me, my next step is to work on becoming able to decide/know myself etc.
I never thought this could happen, but the nonexistence currently doesnt bother me that much as it die before. First, because if i can live confidently, the fear of not living right ceases. Also it really helped me to think about death differently (my partner helped me a Lot in this, she is not fearful of death at all. Insane, right?): The nothingness will not happen to ME, because i won't be there to experience it. So it might scare me, but only WHILE i am alive. And that is something i have to deal with while alive.
I don't know if this makes sense to you?
