I finally bought myself a tarot deck and book to help me learn its practice and interpretations yesterday. I got a mini Rider Waite Smith deck (I like the classic images and the size that is closer to regular playing cards), along with Guided Tarot for Seamless Readings by Stefanie Caponi.
I took a few moments to introduce myself to it and set some loose intentions yesterday before giving my friend a basic past, present, and future reading, the only spread I knew. It was her first reading and hit some very accurate points that made her tear up a bit and gave a bit of insight into struggles and delayed success that may be on the horizon for her.
After reading the book’s introductory info (about 50 pages), I cleansed my deck last night. After cleaning my house this afternoon, I sat down with the deck to interview the cards and journal the results, per the book’s suggestion. At the end, I set intentions for my work with tarot.
For each question, I wrote it down first, then held the question in my mind. I loosely shuffled for each draw, letting cards fall from one hand to the other until one fell out. Then I did a visual/intuitive read before consulting the book.
I thought it would be fun to share my interview notes. I wrote this in my journal but used Claude to transcribe only. It was a great exercise to get to know my deck a bit, and I’m happy with the way it went. This is mostly for fun/sharing, but feel free to share any insight if you wish.
Tarot Deck Interview
What work are we meant to do together?
→ Six of Cups (jumped out while shuffling)
Visual read: Sharing knowledge and beauty. Is the figure handing the cup to the blonde woman the deck and me? Recipient appears grateful. Man figure in the back is ignorant / unaware. I like that there are flowers in the cups too.
Book says: "A loving exchange of support and care that feels like home."
Man in background carries spear, possible protection, safety.
What are you here to teach me about myself?
→ Nine of Swords
Visual read: Grief, shadow self, loneliness, sickness, fatigue. Also a blonde. Bed depicts war carving.
Book says: "An anxious mind leads to restless nights. Explore how you handle worry and stress to transform its impact."
Focus on health and wellness, seek help when needed. Utilize healthy coping mechanisms. Spend time in nature or with others who can help work through negative thoughts.
What are you here to teach me about the world?
→ Queen of Wands (reversed)
Visual read: Queen sits alone on throne with dubious expression. Her wand has a couple of green shoots on it, symbolizing newfound role. Black cat looks like a spiritual protector or guide. Sunflower in hand implies goodness.
Book says:
Upright: creativity, ambition
Reversed: feeling unworthy, creative blocks
"Feminine energy of intuitive creativity and emotional intelligence combined with passion and heart-centered action are held within the Queen of Wands."
Reversed notes: Doubting value/worthiness, feeling as though others don't recognize. Cultivate belief in yourself - confidence shift will bring empowerment. Others will see the transformation and approach w/ more respect/admiration.
What card best describes you as a deck?
→ The Fool
Visual read: Young idealistic man on an adventure, about to walk off a cliff. Masculine energy. Companion dog alongside. Knapsack on stick, rose in hand, looking for love and perhaps knowledge. 0 number.
Book says: "The Fool embarks on a new journey, leaving the past behind, carrying w/ him only the lessons learned and curiosity to begin again."
New beginning, freedom. Path of unfolding consciousness. 0, open container, encompassing everything and nothing.
"This is where your adventure begins! The Fool knows he is on the right path, even if he doesn't know where it will lead."
Your intuition is always by your side - tune into its guidance and heed its messages as your own consciousness expands/unfolds.
What card best describes me at this time?
→ The Sun (reversed)
Visual read: Naked playful baby on a horse, also blonde! I am a child. Sun in background - powerful light, and flowing robes/drapes - dynamic. Reversal to me feels like ignorance of the all-encompassing power / energy behind me. Number 19.
Book says: "The Sun reveals a clarity that comes only after we have spent time with the darkest parts of ourselves."
Reversed: pessimism, confusion
"One of the only cards in the deck that means virtually the same thing whether it is drawn upright or reversed."
Sun asks me to take a look at my circumstances and celebrate the small wins. Beware of being pessimistic, because things are improving.
Personal/spiritual: Feeling healthier inside and out following sadness or illness (true!). Consider inner child-healing work or new/old hobby or passion.
