Thinking of dropping out

I (19M) started studying abroad in Romania Bucharest but just after I arrived here I do not like it like the others do. Other people I know look like they are having the time of their lives while I'm stressing out in my dorm room alone. I've talked with my parents and they say it's a nice place but I'm not liking anything here. I feel so empty and I have no energy to do anything and it has been a common occurrence for people to be loud at night until 4am. I haven't gotten any more than 4 hours of sleep. I'm thinking of leaving for home tomorrow and staying there. I don't want to disappoint my parents but I genuinely feel like I cannot do this.

Studying at Beijing (Normal University)

Hi all, I recently solo travelled to China and decided I want to learn Chinese. My city in the UK offers a niche and almost too good to be true (but is true) course that is a dual degree with Beijing normal uni, so you spend 2 full years there. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of studying here or being an international student in Beijing / China? thanks! ( I’ll be entering the course at 19, so will be 20 when I move to Beijing).

NSLI-Y Need of Advie and if any Alumni are willing

Hi, I'm a Junior in high school and I want to do International Relations in college. I'm highly interested in language and culture.

I've been interested in study abroad since middle school. I recently found NSLI-Y and was able to convince my family for the summer program. I have heard that the essay portion is the most important part of your application. I have been rereading and rereading and need a new pair of eyes.

If any Alumni are able to look over my essays and give advice I would much appreciate it!

Open Doors Russian Scholarship

I’m trying to hunt Open Doors Russian Scholarship. Is anyone granted this scholarship and can you share your experience.
Is it worth considering?
My background is from Business Administration, I choose Business and Management, Economics and Econometrics Subject field under this scholarship.
Submitted my Motivation Letter and there’s an option of Entry Test in the first phase. What this entry test will be about?
Do I need to prepare before giving that Entry Test and I’m unable to find a syllabus or curriculum about which this entry test would be?
What to Expect!
If anyone had some experience with this scholarship, do share your relevant info.

American Student Seeks Advice!

Hello! I am looking for advice about my future studies in Italy! I am an American college student who will be studying abroad next year, and can’t wait! I’m curious to know what would be appropriate and normal clothing to bring and wear as I know that standards when it comes to clothing elsewhere are much higher than those that most hold here in the states. I’m not the type to wear lounge or activewear out during the day, I almost exclusively wear jeans or slacks with sweaters, blouses, and t shirts, and wear converse sneakers or boots almost every day. I want to feel comfortable with my outfits when I am in Italy (will be in Florence/Firenze). What are some things I definitely shouldn’t wear out when there, and some things that would be best to blend in?? TIA!!

Possible exchange in the US - need help picking a college!

Hiii, I am an aussie hopefully looking at doing a semester abroad in the US in the fall and was hoping for some advice on which colleges to apply for as I cannot decide! My top contenders are University of South Carolina, Clemson, University of Mississippi, Umass Amherst and San Diego State University.

I will be studying arts. I’m looking for the authentic college experience but also know that the smaller college towns are quite secluded and I want to see other places in the country. I was wondering realistically how hard it would be to get around if I don’t have a car.

Any advice or insight into the pros/cons, social scene, living on vs off campus, things to do outside of college, safety and anything else about these school would be greatly appreciated! Especially from anyone who has done an exchange or gone to these schools.

My other options (that I have not looked into as much) include: University of Texas at Dallas, San Francisco State University, California State University - Long Beach, Oregon State University, Iowa State University, Kansas State University, University of Oklahoma, University of South Florida, State University New York - Stony Brook, Loyola University, Hunter College NY and Suffolk University.

Thanks guys!!!!!

(also if there are any other subreddits you think i should post this on pls lmk!)

Title: International Gap Year Student from Pakistan | 1420 SAT | 3 A*s A-Levels | EFC $10k–$11k per year— Where should I apply for Early Action (EA) in the US with good aid?

Stats & Background:

Status: International student from Pakistan, currently on a gap year (graduated high school in August 2026).

A-Levels: 3 A*s (Accounting, Economics, Business)

IGCSEs: 6 A*s, 2 As, 1 B

SAT: 1420

Expected Family Contribution (EFC): Around $10,000 to $11,000 per year.

Current Plan: Applying Early Decision (ED) to NYU Shanghai, but looking for non-binding Early Action (EA) options in the US as backup.

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student from Pakistan currently taking a gap year after graduating in August 2026. I am submitting an Early Decision (ED) application to NYU Shanghai, but I also want to apply to US institutions through Early Action (EA) to build out my backup options early.

Given my financial situation, my family can contribute roughly $10k–$11k per year, which means I’ll need significant financial aid or generous scholarships to make studying in the US feasible.

With my academic profile (3 A*s in A-Levels, 1420 SAT), which Early Action (EA) schools in the US should I target? I'm looking for colleges and universities that offer non-binding Early Action and either meet high demonstrated need for international/Pakistani students or offer substantial merit scholarships for an EFC in the $10k–$11k range.

Appreciate any recommendations or advice!

With the ongoing protests and political climate, is France still a safe/smart option for a Bachelor’s, or should I pivot to Germany or Belgium?

Hey everyone,
I’m currently finalizing my plans for an undergraduate degree (aiming for an English-taught Bachelor in Business / Management for the upcoming intake), and France has been my top choice because of its business schools and overall international environment.
However, seeing the frequent news about protests, transport strikes, and political debates lately has made me hesitate about moving to France as an incoming international student.
My main alternative options right now are Germany and Belgium.
For current international students or expats living in France right now:
How much do strikes and protests actually disrupt day-to-day student life, getting to campus, and class schedules?
Is safety an issue for international students during these periods, especially in major cities?
Has the political atmosphere affected the general student experience, student jobs, or internships?
Knowing the ground reality today, would you still pick France, or would you recommend looking at Germany or Belgium instead?
Would appreciate any honest insights from people currently there. Thanks!
