Rent and living costs

Hi!
I’m planning to move to do a PhD in Stanford, I looked up into the stipends they get as PhDs is around 5000 a month, will this be enough to live around that area? Knowing that i want a studio or a 1bed 1bath apartment (not shared kitchen or bath). Also, is overall living costs exceeding the stipends or not?

Thank you!

Background check thru first advantage

Hey guys. I just filled out the first advantage forms. Do they really call and reach out to my previous employers for 7 years? Or just the most recent employer?

How many days did you guys get the result after the initial application?

Thanks!

Hello everybody,

Is there any free parking near the hospital for night shift employees? My shift starts at 7 pm and lasts until 7 am. Or any recommendations on where to park during those hours?

Thank you!

Stanford STEP Program

Hi everyone!

I’m considering applying to Stanford’s STEP program, and I’d love to hear from anyone who has participated or knows someone who has.
What was the overall experience like, and how would you rate it from 1–10?

I’m especially curious about the lifestyle, workload, living arrangements, and what daily life in Stanford/Palo Alto is actually like.

I’m an international student from with some teaching experience, a high GPA and a lot of volunteering + extra curricular work, and I’d love to know how welcoming the program is to international students. How manageable is the cost of living, and are there scholarships, stipends, or other financial aid options available?

I’d also appreciate hearing about the teaching experience, school placements, and career opportunities after completing the program.

Any honest advice, personal experiences, or insights into applying as an international student would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

What’s the latest for on campus dining?

Coming back for reunion and wanted to try eating on campus. Do the dining halls still have different cuisine “focuses” and which are good nowadays? Any viable competition to Treehouse or TAP? Is Lag late nite still OG?

How’s it going for everyone? I’m shocked by how many people I don’t know or have never seen in my life. I feel like it would be fun to meet new people in addition to catching up with old friends.

Confirm someone’s alumni status

Hello! I am in a weird situation and we (our friend group) have reason to believe that one of our friends is lying about their alumni status from the Stanford graduate school of business. Would any recent alums could do a quick search on the alumni directory to verify?

Many thanks in advance!

Not eligible to vote in Palo Alto City Council elections?

I was just checking my sample ballot from Santa Clara county, so that I could be prepared once I receive my actual mail-in ballot. However, I just realized that there is no section for voting in the Palo Alto City Council.

Just double checked the city boundaries, and yep, all of the campus housing is in Stanford, CA, a CDP unicorporated region, and isn't part of the proper city of Palo Alto. I guess it shouldn't be that much of a surprise, given that my zip code is literally for Stanford, CA - but it is frustrating to find out.

Has there ever been any move to try and move the city boundary to be part of the housing section of the university? I would imagine that Stanford would be strongly, strongly opposed to this. Are there any benefits from not being part of the city Palo Alto, and just being in Stanford instead?

Stanford staff: Do you need to provide references when transferring internally?

When I first joined Stanford, I was asked to provide 3 references, and they called all 3 people.

If I apply for a position in a different department as an internal candidate, will the new department ask me to provide references again? Or do they usually rely on my existing employment record at Stanford?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through an internal transfer. Thanks!
