Announcement Welcome to StageAnalysis: start here
I’ve taken over moderation of this sub and plan to get it active again.
Stage Analysis is the method Stan Weinstein laid out in Secrets for Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets. It sorts a stock, sector, or index into one of four stages using its weekly chart and the 30-week moving average:
- Stage 1, Basing: the decline has stopped and price moves sideways around a flattening average.
- Stage 2, Advancing: price breaks out of the base and holds above a rising average.
- Stage 3, Topping: the advance stalls and the average flattens again.
- Stage 4, Declining: price falls below a falling average.
Weekly charts determine the stage. Daily charts are for timing.
New here? The wiki has the four stages, a glossary, and where the method comes from.
What this sub is for
- Market, stocks and sector stage reads
- Stocks moving between stages
- Stage 2 breakouts / pull-backs and the bases behind them
- Relative strength, volume, and the 30-week average
- Risk management and position sizing
- Charts, questions, and resources
New to Weinstein or have read the book three times, you’re welcome here.
Rules
The full list is in the sidebar. The short version: stay on Stage Analysis, no self-promotion or ads, no buy calls or pumping, and post your reasoning with your chart.
Disclosure: I run AlphaMethodX, a Stage Analysis screening site. When a screenshot from it helps illustrate a point about the method or provides market insight, I'll post it, and with no sign-up pitch.

Stage 1 NVO - Stage 1 Basing
$NVO has transitioned from Stage 2 (advancing) > Stage 3 (topping) > Stage 4 (declining) and has entered Stage 1 (basing). Looks like a potential cup-and-handle forming and this could lead to a break out back into Stage 2.

Psychology Winning vs. Losing Traders
“If you want to succeed in an endeavor where 90% are failing, you have two choices. You can study the large 90% losing group and do the opposite of what they do, or you can replicate what the 10% do.” - Tom Hougaard
Tom Hougaard spent ten years watching the LOSING majority. What he saw them do:
🤦♂️Never add to a winner
🤦♂️Skip the stop-loss, because an open loss still has hope
🤦♂️Add to losing trades, because a lower price feels like a bargain
🤦♂️Take half profits on winners

Sector & Market Stock Stage Trends
Stage 1 (advancing) stocks peaked mid August and has been trending down since.
Stage 2 (basing) is trending up, and this is the place to watch for the next break outs.
