Hi everyone , so right now I have my 4th critical squirrel that requires complex veterinary care that I have had in the past two weeks. I unfortunately have emptied my veterinary fund on 2 critical squirrels, despite my exotic vet's generous discounts. I was able to get the third critical squirrel of this week veterinary care because of this amazing community, which saved that squirrels life, though she is bit completely stable yet. It will take me about two weeks until I can top my veterinary fund back up.
This time, a squirrel didn't come in from the wild, she is a juvenile that I hand raised this season and that was already in my care. 😞
I raised her from an eyes-closed baby, and she was so close to being ready for release.. but all of a sudden on Thursday, we noticed that she had developed a bad abscess at the base of her spine (which is an extremely dangerous spot) and now she is showing very concerning signs of infection, possibly sepsis.. It seemed to show up overnight, but it was likely there for a few days, and we only noticed when she groomed her fur away out of discomfort...
The picture attached is the abscess from yesterday It has since gotten worse and she needs to see a vet immediately.. he said it is serious enough to consider amputation but that it probably is impossible because of its location. So she also needs surgery and heavy antibiotics. The vet bill is going to be $300 barring any unforeseen complications. I have enough to put 100 towards it. I desperately need to get her help today because my vet is closed tomorrow.
If this amazing community would be willing to rally around us once again and contribute to her care, I (and my sweet Lily) would be so grateful.
The first picture is of her as a baby, she actually lost the tip of her tail from her fall from the tree, which also misaligned her bite and gave her a malocclusion. Her in the burrito is the first time I filed her teeth down. She was so calm while I did it that she fell asleep. So many sleepless night feeding her and having her fall asleep in my hands...I will be devastated if I lose her and she never gets the chance to be free. 😞

I recently gave a young squirrel I found to a Wildlife Refuge. He was in my care for about 5 weeks. I found him in a shopping center under my car. Very weak and probably 7-9 weeks old. I took him home and started him on squirrel formula and just started educating myself about his care. I would let him out of the crate I was keeping him in and took him outside sometimes for some sun and exercise. He would climb nearby trees and come back to me. One day he didn’t. So he was gone several days and when he came back he was hungry, exhausted, and part of his tail hair was missing. I felt really guilty that happened and decided that a rehab would be a better place for him to be safe, grow and learn to be an adult squirrel. So I brought him there a few days ago but I miss him terribly. I feel crazy being so upset and depressed over him but he was just so precious. Has anyone had this type of grief over turning their squirrel over to a rescue?

I have made the squirrel pilgrimage. I have met the final bosses of squirrel-feeding: the Olney whites.

They are just curled up asleep at the base of the tree. It doesn't seem injured and ran up the side of the tree (but only a foot or two up) when I walked up. I noticed it & avoided looking directly at it and it went back into it's lil spot and curled back up. It let me get really close without running again, but I want going to bother it because, you know, wild animal.....

I just thought y'all would find these critters neat. They're not all albino, though some are if you look at the eyes, they're mostly leucistic, meaning having a genetic condition that causes a partial or total loss of all types of pigment in an animal's skin, hair, feathers, scales, or cuticles, while usually keeping normal-colored eyes. There's much speculation about why they're here but no hard explanation. I love seeing them around town and thought the internet might as well.

It is designed to come off for cleaning. First squirrel to hit it hard enough to take it down!
