I need help for my next cat
Iāve seen Peterbald owner post in this subreddit, there isnāt any Peterbald subreddit hence why Iām asking the question here.
Context here, i currently own a Sphynx cat. His name is Stinky. He is my baby. I never had any cats before that was that much close to me. He was also my first Sphynx. I got him from a good breeder, not a backyard breeder or anything.
Unfortunately Stinky has been diagnosed with HCM about a month and a half ago. He is 5 years old and the disease is currently progressing very fast. Like, very fast. I was told he only have a few months to a year to live. And currently I see he started getting resistant to his medication so i know Iāll unfortunately will have to put him down when his medication wonāt work anymore.
Iām disabled and only work part time on minimum wage. I live with my parents so all my other essential are pretty much covered except I pay a small pension to my parents and pay for my medication, pet product, vet exams, phone. I spent the most I could in my position to treat him the best i could. Currently i spend 1/4 of my salary on his medication.
I know when he is gone I want another cat. When I got Stinky it was after I lost my Singapura Yuki to cancer. Stinky brought me so much joy and he was the type of cat I always wanted, with how he was clinging on me at all times. This is what i needed in my life, he helped me so much with my unstable mental health. But Iām too scared to get to the HCM hell once again if I get another Sphynx. This whole situation broke my heart so bad.
So Iāve heard about Peterbald being similar to Sphynx without the same big risk of HCM linked to them. Would a Peterbald be a similar experience to the Sphynx temperament wise?
I have money saved for my next cat. And I know how to budget to make sure I have enough for vet emergency and give the best care in my own means to the next cat I will own. Unfortunately compared to the USA, Canada hasnāt much insurance coverage options, but I will look into them although i tend to usually āself insureā myself by putting money in a savings, which was how I was able to get treatment for Stinky. Note that I am close to Ottawa and I was able to find a Peterbald breeder registered with Tica in Toronto which my parents are on par to do the trip. Iāve heard about Don Sphynx also being similar but the closest breeder is in the USA and I donāt have a passport yet because I donāt travel outside Canada.

Took Petal on her first vacation!
Months ago, Petal was rehomed to me and I started the sphynx journey! And we just got home from our first vacation! We took her along because she gets very stressed when one of her people isn't around (I think maybe because she's deaf) and needs a special diet. She did so well in the car (three hours) and had so much fun!! She's my favorite cat ever. <3 <3

MetLife Insurance Advice
Hi all, happy spooky season! Need to find Maude the perfect costume this year!
We adopted Maude 4 years ago when she was 2. Her original home was looking to rehome her after they had a baby and we were lucky enough to vibe with her enough to be considered to be her new parents.
She has had regular wellness checks at the vet with no health concerns (besides the fact that she is always a pound over weight but she eats the plants if we feed her less).
She also came from a breeder that shows she doesnāt have the heart failure gene (or maybe someone can chime in and correct me on what I meanāwe still have the breederās paperwork and information but I canāt remember what that was supposed to guarantee).
Anyway. Iām looking at pet insurance through my employer.
Im open to high deductible, low deductible, anything. But need advice on what, in your experience, makes the most sense.
I am attaching the price breakdowns of the top high deductible contenders, but just to give an idea of how the price changes based on the selections I make in the screenshots. I barely understand my human insurance and so asking for your experience. Even the cheapest monthly option adds up to more than what we spend at the vet in a year. But I also want to make sure Iām insured before anything happens and it becomes a pre existing condition.

Fussy food suggestions
Hi, we got our sphynx kitty about a month ago.
Her breeder said she was a nightmare to feed, refused to eat wet food after a few days and would always find a way into her mum's royal canin sphynx kibble, it upset her stomach and gave her runny poops, but she ate it. The breeder tried her on various kitten kibbles all of which she refused to eat until a few days before we picked her up at just over 4 months when she was eating Lily's kitchen kitten kibble. She then refused to eat that for us. So we continued to tempt her with different kitten kibble, a couple of pieces alongside sphynx royal canin which is obviously her safety food. She'll refuse and leave the other kitten kibble, even when we've ground it and sprinkled it on top, she'll just leave the whole bowl.
We managed to persuade her to eat marro alongside but won't eat more than a 1/2 pack a day which isn't enough for her.
We tried raw and mixed a smear into her marro which she refused and tried to mix a smear into her kibble which she then also refused. She then refused the marro afterwards because the last serving was altered.
Is it okay for her to carry on the royal canin sphynx even though she's only 5 months?
If it is, is there anything we can give her to help firm her poops alongside? It stresses her out as it goes everywhere and needs wiping afterwards.
Vet has done testing and all was clear and they said to just keep trying different kitten kibble until she likes one.
Is there any other food we might not have thought of? Our friends have sphynx and recommended hair ball food to firm her up but we haven't tried that as it seems crazy to give a hairless cat hairball food. They also have one of her littermates who happily eats wet food and kitten kibble so it isn't like it's an issue with the breeder.
She has a fortiflora sachet each day and protexin at the moment on vets recommendation. Her breeder tried to give her pumpkin but she refused that too.
She drinks well, doesn't like any treats that aren't the crunchy pocket type, only gets one of these after ear cleans. Won't even eat churru type lick treats or plain roast chicken/freeze dried chicken cubes.
We have other cats, a Bengal and a ragdoll. We have fostered kittens before too, so we're not completely new to cats/kittens. Just very new to such a little fuss pot, which obviously she is more than welcome to be and we love it, we just want to make sure we're doing everything we can that's right for her.

My husband, who didnāt want a Sphynx, sleeping with his baby
When we met, I told him my dream cat was a Sphynx, but he wasnāt sold on the idea of getting one. He eventually caved, and within 24 hours, he fell in love. Now, 4.5 months later, they are inseparable!

Punchy loves his wheel
Bought this for him last month and just clap and praise him every time he walks or runs on it. Now he is SPEED.

Amazing Update: Body Condition Score of 5
Some of you may remember that my boy was underweight and I hadnāt fully realized it (was given wrong information). He was brought to their normal vet (different than the one we got wrong information from) for a checkup because he has HCM. Iām happy to report that not only is he not in CHF, but they couldnāt hear his heart murmur at all which had been grade 3 or 4 at all previous visits, heās at a healthy weight now, and his body condition score was a 5!
Speaking of HCM management, any HCM kitty parents, I would love some tips for keeping him out of CHF for a long as possible. He is on a low sodium, high protein wet food that I changed him to recently, is very active, Iām at home most of the time, and Iām going to reintegrate fish oil into his diet as soon as his stool is well managed with his current diet (he has a sensitive tummy), and I monitor his SRR regularly. We are also working on a request for transferring me to another building within accessible city housing that has less fire alarms and less general conflict/chaos for my sake and the cats to further reduce stress, and once there I plan to add more thorough enrichment via wall attachments and cat trees, of which I already have some and plan to get more. If anyone has any further suggestions and ideas for him Iād be interested to know. Sadly the FDA approved med for HCM management is not available here, so heās only on Atenolol.
