How the Brewers utilized Moneyball to beat Padres & Dodgers, reach the 2026 World Series

In 2026, Milwaukee hit the second-fewest home runs in the game yet scored the second-most runs. How, you might ask? Here’s where we find the undervalued asset.

The Brewers led the world in base hits and team batting average. They collected a bunch of overlooked, high-contact (and lower-cost) bats to create a lineup that just keeps slapping singles around the yard, frustrating pitchers while scoring one run at a time. It’s death by paper cuts, and it’s put them four wins away from their first championship.

Even the Padres had to tip their caps to the game plan that ended their season.

Certified California Naturalists?

Hi all, I'm currently enrolled in one of the UCANR California Naturalist classes and am curious about the experience of those who've done this previously. Specifically, I'm interested to hear what you did and your classmates do for your Stewardship Project (or capstone, if you did it before they changed the name and, probably, details of the project).

I'm also curious about what you've been able to do with the certification and what you kearned in you classes since. What cool field work or citizen science have you been anle to do? What volunteering opportunities did this open up for you? Did your own project, or a classmate's really take off? Or did you get connected to some interesting people or organizations?

Would love to hear anything you have to share!

For those who aren't familiar with the [UCANR California Naturalist Certification program](https://ucanr.edu/program/uc-environmental-stewards/about-our-program), here's some information.

Prop 3 - Maintain current tax levels

I decided to start a separate thread to bring attention to this. All the attention has been going to Prop 40, but prop 40 is a one time tax. Prop 3 keeps tax level where they've been since 2012, on individuals making over 360k and couples making over 721k. This tax brings in $5 billion to $15 billion a year and nearly all of the money is earmarked for education. The importance of this dwarfs prop 40... please do not sleep on it. Prop 40 almost feels like a distraction at this point.

New CA Booster seat law for 2027

I was just googling booster seats for my 9yo and debating whether she still needs one when I discovered that the law is changing on 1/1/27. Currently, only children who are 8 and under AND haven’t reached 4’9 are legally required to use a booster. Starting in the new year, AB 435 will require those under the age of 16 but older than 8 to pass the 5-Step Seatbelt Fit Test no matter their height or weight. Those who cannot pass are required to use a booster seat. No changes have been made regarding sitting in the front seat. That remains 13 and up. I had no idea about any of this, despite having kids in the exact age range impacted. This seems like the kind of thing the public should be informed about and given time to prepare for. Boosters are a lot cheaper than car seats, but an unexpected $50-$100 expense right around the holidays will be painful for some families. Have I been living under a rock? Are other parents aware?

The 5-Step Seatbelt Fit Test:
The child sits all the way back against the auto seat — not perched on the edge or slouching.
The child’s knees bend comfortably over the edge of the seat — their legs aren’t dangling or sticking straight out.
The shoulder belt crosses the center of the child’s chest and shoulder — not riding up on the neck or tucked behind the back.
The lap belt lies as low as possible across the thighs — not cutting across the stomach.
The child can stay seated this way for the entire trip — not sliding down or repositioning mid-ride.

Solar vs SCE help

I'm new to the solar game and received this edison bill that says I imported over 300 kw from the grid on this bill (sept-oct roughly a month period). Am I reading this right?

Then I look at my solar app that monitors my usage at home and it tells me that I imported only about 11 kw in September from the grid. I know this is not showing October so it is a different date range, but Oct looks the same as Sept in this app, and is showing me low numbers. Definitely nothing like 300.

Am I missing something? Why is there such a huge discrepancy?

A love letter to the people of LA

This is a great city, we all know it. Please for the love of god, vote NO on Measure FD. No more sales tax increases 😢. The last one just went to into effect October 2026, from 9.75% to 10.25%. Isn’t that enough?

If you’re a surfer and work remotely, earning an annual salary of $175k, where would you live in Orange County?

Is it possible to have a good quality of life there, or is Orange County a lost cause for someone with that kind of salary?

Looking for footage or witnesses to a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred on 9/22/26 on Ventura Blvd & Carpenter Ave in Studio City

(BEFORE YOU READ, PLEASE NOTE: I have already shared this post in local subreddits like [r/studiocity](r/studiocity) and [r/northhollywood](r/northhollywood). Someone I know has already shared a similar post in [r/SFV](r/SFV), so I’m not posting there since the subreddit doesn’t allow reposts on the same topic within a 6-month time frame. I’m trying to post this in multiple subreddits across the greater LA/SoCal area in hopes that it reaches someone who was there at the time of the accident or has any information that can lead to IDing the other driver, since those who drove through the intersection at the time of the accident (including the suspect) or even the people who may possibly recognize the suspect based on the description of the vehicle might not necessarily live in or near Studio City. It’s been several weeks without any leads, so we’re desperately trying to leave no stone unturned).

On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at approximately 7:05 AM, my friend, Philip Chon, was riding his yellow 2019 Honda Monkey motorcycle on his way to work when he was struck and killed at the intersection of Ventura Blvd and Carpenter Ave, Studio City, CA.

The driver was in a dark blue 2004 Honda Odyssey traveling westbound on Ventura. They made an unprotected left turn onto Carpenter Ave, struck Philip, abandoned the van on Carpenter Ave south of Ventura (which investigators have impounded), and fled on foot.

Below are links to news articles about this, as well as the community alert about the accident:

Despite being in possession of the suspect’s vehicle, police have not publicly released the license plate number or identified who the vehicle is registered. They are, however, seeking the public’s help with identifying the suspect responsible for this fatal accident (knowing who the vehicle is registered to doesn’t necessarily prove that they were the one driving it; police need actual evidence of the person behind the wheel).

If you live, work, or drive along Ventura Blvd, Carpenter Ave, or surrounding streets/access points, please check your Ring cameras, home or business security cameras, and dashcams for footage from 6:30 AM to 8:30 AM on September 22.

Footage of the van before the collision or someone fleeing on foot afterward could help. Even if you don't think your video has anything important in it.

Some camera systems automatically delete old recordings, so please save anything relevant in case it gets overwritten.

If you have footage or information, please contact:
