Silver City Map

Post image

Somebody a while ago in the banff subreddit found this image on Sunshine's facebook a while ago. Thought this was super interesting but unfortunately the text in the image is barely legible so the names of the routes are unknown. I doubt anybody would have a higher quality image but it would be super cool if one came up.

Dachstein West vs Vars-Risoul

• Upvotes

Hi, I'm currently deciding where to go with my son. This will be an organized trip, with ski school for kids. Both early February. My primary concern is the snow, i.e. where the snow conditions are more sure, as I must commit now. It seems French resort is higher so im thinking this is a safer option. I know this place, I was there 10 years ago and I liked it. I do not know Dachstein West - but it is much closer. I am advanced on piste skier, he is beginner starting to carve turns who was skiing with me in Nassfeld this year, and wasnt scared of difficult reds too much. Though obviously he felt best on the easier red tracks. Anyway, im leaning towards France but this is a long way for us. I will appreciate some recommendations. Thanks!

  5. Kicking Horse
  6. Killington

Since I am at east coast, Also been to: Hunter, Stowe, Mount Snow, Okemo, Jackson Hole, Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Kicking Horse, Lake Louise, Snowbasin, Sugarbush, Whiteface, and Gore.

Outside North America, around Chamonix: Brévent, Grands Montets, and Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc.

Planning 6 days of skiing at Les Trois vallées. Looking for a way to start meribel, then do a 3-4 nights backpacking trip.

Hi guys , I’m looking to book a 6 days of skiing trip this winter. I’m looking for intel. My plan would be to arrive one night at Meribel, leave the ski bags there, then so a 3/4 nights in a different hotel every night in a loop and back to Meribel for 1/2 nights.

I see many hotels have a minimum stay requirements. Does anybody have recommendations? I may be wrong but I feel 3-4 nights loop would allow to explore more than staying at the same place ? Any thoughts ?

I’m also basic and made an app. Mine is about tracking your completion of ski mountains.

I wanted to see how much of my local mountains I’ve actually skied, and if I had actually done every run and ridden every Chairlift, so I decided to make an app that actually tracks that.

It’s pretty much Wandrer but for ski mountains.

I also was curious about what lift I had ridden the most since I started tracking my days so I included that as well. Turn out for me it’s Alpenglow at Eldora with 440 rides!

Anyways I was hoping some people would be willing to join my TestFlight beta on iOS and give some feedback and let me know if their completion stats look correct. Or just feel free to check it out just to see what your completion rate at your mountains looks like. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to perfect the matching algo against my own data, but I’ve really only skied in the Rocky Mountains so I’m sure I missed some weird edge cases.

It’s available through this link and at the moment it only syncs activities through Apple Health, or you can manually import them if you’re willing to export them from whatever app you use to track your days.

Which place to ski?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm planning a ski trip from San Diego and would really appreciate some advice from people familiar with the local resorts.

I'm planning to ski on Friday, January 29, Saturday, January 30, and Sunday, January 31, 2027. I'd prefer to keep the drive to around three hours from San Diego.

I'm considering Snow Valley, Snow Summit, and Mountain High, but I'm open to other suggestions.

My main concerns are snow reliability and weekend crowds. I'd love to find a resort with good snow conditions, plenty of open runs, and shorter lift lines, especially on Saturday and Sunday.

I'm an intermediate skier, comfortable on green and blue runs. I already have snow clothing, but I don't own any equipment, so I'll need to rent everything, including skis or a snowboard, boots, a helmet, and any other necessary gear. I'd appreciate recommendations that take the full rental package cost into account.

For those who regularly ski in Southern California:

Which resort would you recommend for the best snow conditions in late January?

Which tends to be less crowded on weekends?

How reliable is snow coverage at these resorts around that time of year?

Which resort offers the best overall value when lift tickets and full equipment rentals are included?

Is there another resort within roughly three hours of San Diego that I should consider?

I know conditions can vary from year to year, but any advice based on your experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

New jacket (Europe)

Looking for a new ski / snowboard jacket (and probably pants) available in Europe. I ski mostly in alps (Austria) and in Nordics (where can be really cold). I ski all day long and in all different weather. Would love some recommendations!

Custom footbeds - milled or custom blanks?

Howdy,

I think its time for me to get footbeds. I pronate and I find myself digging on my inner edge sometimes.

I was shopping around and it looks like there are a few different options? Either a 3D scan that they end up machine milling into the footbed or an off the shelf kit such as the sids custom ones which sound to me they take an impression then vacuum a blank on it with heat and it forms.

Any insight on whether each technique has pros and cons? The milled ones are more expensive.

TGR's 2026 Film Tour: "Actually, it is Rocket Science"

Went to see TGR's Film Tour in Chicago this week, and really enjoyed it. Wanted to pass along info here, as I feel like these showings aren't heavily advertised.

The movie was great. I'm not as much of a connoisseur of stoke films as some of you all, but I enjoyed this one. Had what I expected: a lot of great ski footage, interspersed with some backstory on the athletes, overlaid with a tongue-in-cheek nod to the "rocket science" theme.

$31 for the ticket after fees.

Before the film, they had an "Athlete Panel and Q&A," billed as: Hear stories from the athletes about filming, travel, big lines, and what went into making Actually, It Is Rocket Science.

Wasn't quite sure what to expect, but it was really insightful. One of the TGR Tour producers (Mack Moran) led a discussion with one of the TGR athletes in the film (Anna Tedesco). It was a fascinating discussion about her background (professional pilot as well as skier), along with a lot of discussion of what went into making the movie.

All in all, well worth the price of admission.

My new Buff Polar is ripping

Is it normal for a newly bought Buff to start ripping at the top? I only tried it on to see how it looked, and it started ripping when I stretched it over my head. This is my first time buying a Buff, so I’m not sure if this is normal.

[Petition] Bring back public transit to Mountain Creek! Let’s get NJ Transit to extend Route 194 to Vernon.

Hey everyone,
If you ride at Mountain Creek Bike Park or ski/ snowboard there in the winter, you probably know how much of a pain (or how expensive) it is to get up to Vernon if you don't drive or want to save on gas/wear-and-tear.
Ever since NJ Transit canceled the old seasonal 304 express bus over a decade ago, there has been zero direct public transit to the resort. Right now, taking transit means riding a bus to Wayne or West Milford and paying $50+ each way for an Uber/Lyft.
I'm starting a initiative to petition NJ Transit and Mountain Creek Resort to co-sponsor a simple, low-cost solution: extending select trips on the existing NJ Transit Route 194 by just 12 miles from its current end point in West Milford (Stockholm) straight up Route 23/94 to Mountain Creek. Conceptualized as Route 194M on select trips. More details in the Google Docs link within the petition description.
If you'd like to see an affordable transit connection restored between NYC/North Jersey and Mountain Creek, please take 30 seconds to sign and share the petition: https://www.change.org/restore-
mountaincreektransit
Thanks for the support! Let's get enough signatures to bring this to NJ Transit, and Mountain Creek management.

Storing skis with straps

Is it bad practice to store skis and have them strapped together? A single rubber strap in the center of the ski compressing them together gently? Assuming it's stored upright, with storage wax, in a temperature controlled environment, will this damage or degrade a ski, does it make any meaningful difference? Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question.

Edit: the reason I ask is because I have a lot of skis, and I don't have a fancy alter/room to hang them all up - it's much easier to keep them strapped together because they all have to go into a closet for the off season. Not strapping them just make things way more unwieldily.

Updated my ski pass map website for the 2026-2027 season – Epic, Ikon, Mountain Collective, Indy, Powder Alliance, Cooper, Freedom, Power, and Snow Passes

Thumbnail
gallery
58 Upvotes

I've done my annual update of https://passmap.ski/ for the 2026-2027 season! It's a site I made and keep maintained for every season, which lists what resorts are included on the following passes: Epic + Epic Partner, Ikon, Mountain Collective, Powder Alliance, Indy, Cooper, Freedom, Power, and Snow.

New this season:

  • Ikon pass levels: You can now choose between each level of Ikon Pass (Full, Base, Session). Previously it was only "Ikon" resorts that didn't differentiate between the Ikon pass types
  • Indy Learn to Turn: Now a dropdown within the Indy Pass
  • Snow Pass: New this year! Might add the Snow Pass Triple Play as a drop down later
  • Searching for "parent" resort groups: Now you can search for a "parent" resort and see all resorts that are a part of it (for example, searching "Aspen Snowmass" will return all 4 associated mountains). Resorts that are part of a parent resort now display that when you click on them
  • Lots of search, filtering, and display improvements

Future improvements I have planned:

  • Adding new passes (Austrian Super-Ski Card; let me know if there's one you want to see)
  • Working on visually clarifying cross-country-only vs resorts with downhill and cross-country on the Indy Pass
  • Finalizing resorts on Indy Learn to Turn for 26-27 when it's released

I made the first version of this map to coordinate a ski trip with friends who had different passes to figure out where we could go to maximize everyone's pass – I hope it's been useful to people in planning their trips or deciding what passes to buy! Just as a note, I make no money off this, and I keep it maintained as a community resource :)

I'd love to hear any feedback and I'm open to suggestions of what I could add to make this more useful. Please also let me know here on this post or through the site if you see any errors or things that need fixing. Cheers and stay safe out there this season!

Best skis for short slow skidded turns

I'm an advanced east coast skier who likes to go slow (10-20mph), prefer short radius skidded turns and loves bumps and trees. (Mostly-icy-east-coast trees, not powder-stash-trees of the west). I'm looking for a ski that would excel at short radius skidded turns but still able to get a good edge grip to carve across the occasional icy trail.

Ideally narrow (under 85mm?), flexible and lightweight for easy quick turning. All I can find are heavy carving skis or light beginner skis - but the latter come with integrated binding system and I want to use my own bindings (Tyrolia Protector for better ACL safety). Am I chasing a ghost opposite the entire ski industry direction? Or is there a ski like this?

Also, I'm pondering the idea of a shorter ski. I'm 6', 200 lbs. Currently skiing on 170cm, thinking about 160 or even 150 to help make turns snappier and fit better in tight trees/bumps. Besides losing some powder float (not relevant 95% of ski days) and high speed stability (not relevant for me), is there any reason not to do it?

Is the Icelantic Nia Pro 105 162cm too much ski for me? (5'5", 155 lb, Colorado)

I'm a 5'5", 155 lb male with an athletic build, getting back into skiing after a hiatus. I expect to pick it back up pretty quickly, but I'm obviously still shaking off the rust.

I've fallen in love with the graphics on the Icelantic Nia Pro 105, and found a used pair in 162 cm with bindings for around $450. I'm seriously considering buying them, but I've heard they might be too much ski for me.

I ski primarily in Colorado. I don't know a ton about ski specs, so I'd appreciate some honest advice.

Specs:

  • 105 mm waist
  • 162 cm length
  • Full rocker, no traditional camber
  • 15 m turn radius

Is the Nia Pro 105 a reasonable choice for my height, weight, and current ability, or is it simply too much ski and not the right ski for Colorado? Is 162 cm the right length for me?

Am I letting the graphics sway me toward a ski that doesn't actually make sense for me? (well yeah probably)

I'm not dead set on buying these if there's a genuinely better option, but its a sweet looking ski.

Appreciate any advice, especially from people who have skied the Nia Pro or have experience with a similar setup.

Anyone here DIY their own binding mounts?

I have three pair that I need to mount. I’ve got a shop and all kinds of tools, so setting up for DIY mounting would be no big deal.

Am I a weirdo?
